those 5 yards were huge

considering Walker got in by only inches. Can’t really cry about it since nothing will be done. Bring on the Falcons.

Those 5 yards more likely than not cost the Lions the game ...

I agree with Sean this was the more egregious mistakes, and as a matter of fact could have been the most egregious because there is good chance it cost the Lions the game. Starting from the psychological impact on 49’rs, the Lions D, and the fans, there is a huge difference between the 40 and the 35. When a QB drops back from the 40 it has the feel and look of "mid-field" but when from the 35 it has the confident feel of "red zone" . This is just one of a list of things that 5 extra yards, at that point in the game, on that drive, on your opponents side of the field, could impact… in a "game of inches" those 5 yards is a lot and then some. Yea, someone on the Lion’s coaching staff, whether on field or up in the booth, should of been screaming in Schwartz’s headphones, and it even slipped by Schwartz’s normally keen eye.

I see this a bit differently

Shouldn’t egregious mistakes like that result in fines for officials?

I don’t think that fining is the appropriate approach to dealing with mistakes by officials. In my book, officials are either “good enough” to be NFL officials, or they are not. Missing calls should get them pushed down the priority list so that they are less likely to work “big” games or “playoff games”. Missing too many calls should get them fired.

Fining seems unnecessarily punitive. If an official is doing his best and only misses an acceptable threshold of calls, he shouldn’t be fined or fired. If he is not hitting that threshold, or not trying hard enough, he should be fired.

I think that is what happens

I was just saying that considering players can get fined for wearing the wrong socks.

It is completely rediculous how big the double standard is. Wear the wrong socks? $5,000 fine. Tweet during a game? $20,000 fine. Challenge a play that can’t be challenged? 15 yard penalty! Referee screws up the spot BY FIVE YARDS? Nadda. Call a bogus personal foul? Zip. Call a bull shit horse collar? Nothing. Fuck up the coin toss? You guessed it: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!(except public humiliation) complete bullshit!

Agree, Big Z

As frustrating as it is, I just don’t think you can fine a ref for being bad at his job.

Besides, it doesn’t change the outcome of the game. Maybe if they come up with a system to help teams that got screwed. Like scoring how bad the refs have done against a certain team throughout the year, and rewarding the team accordingly with a compensatory draft pick or something…

Speaking of which,
This is somewhat unrelated but can somebody clarify for me?
I don’t quite remember our draft pick situation but didn’t we lose a draft pick because of the KC tampering BS next year? I hope we make the playoffs, but if we don’t, wouldn’t that be the pick we traded for Brown? How does that work? Do we have another 7th that I am forgetting about?

The pick we traded for Ronnie

Is in 2013. If we lose the draft pick for the ‘tampering’ issue, that’ll be a 6th or 7th rounder in 2012.

This year's draft is the 2012 NFL Draft.

We traded a 2013 pick.

The pick for Brown was a 2013 7th rd

If the Lions don’t make the playoffs, KC gets our 2012 7th rd. If the Lions do make the Playoffs, KC gets the 2012 6th

I thought we gave Philly our 2012 pick.

I agree

Didn’t Ed Hochuli miss the playoffs because of that one debacle in San Diego with the fumble or whatever?

The Referees definitely need to be more accountable

for their mistakes! This is not high school football this is the NFL and we, as paying fans, expect more. I’m sick and tired of this shit just getting blown off. Another perfect example is last year when Detroit got robbed a win against Chicago because of poor officiating! And the list goes on. Ughhh… this frustrates me!

There were atleast 2 major penalties not called.

And they both were block in the backs on big impact plays. The nfl can’t let this be like base ball where once your an umpire you can’t be removed. They need to get rid of guys that constantly make bad calls.

by rowh on Oct 19, 2011 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

I like how they run though the 47 yard run...

the 55 yarder was sprung because of a block in the back….i hate being bitter but when i read how they “Took down the lions” i cant help but be like “fuckkkk youuuu!” to the jack asses how didn’t even watch the game but act like they know what they are talking about.

Here’s hoping towards some good refs. and pass protection.

No offense to Carson but

I can’t be the only one thinking that even making the playoffs anything short of a superbowl can’t justify that trade.

True Point

I do think that the Raiders will make the playoffs and might be an underdog to win it all. However, even if they do win the superbowl its a bad trade. This team has NO picks in the top 5 rounds this year and won’t have a 1st next. This move might be good right now but in the long run its gonna kill em.

Yea but ...

they are a young team right now and have a lot of good potential and talent in place. Positions where they have some old veteran’s that will soon need replacing are in positions that really don’t require “first round” urgency… for those type of positions other rounds still can fill them with quality and that doesn’t include free agency. In the critical positions the Raiders are loaded and young. Carson Palmer should get much better protection in Oakland and probably won’t be picking grass out of his teeth on every down like he did in Cincinnati. Protection and the California sunshine should make for a pretty good Carson Palmer who will probably end up being the QB he’s was projected to be when he came into the NFL

by Black & Gld on Oct 19, 2011 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

JaMarcus Russell was potential and talent on a young team too.

Age of roster does not indicate future performance, unfortunately. The draft is kind of necessary to keep cycling it over so that you get the best of both worlds – youth and performance.

Also couple more notes...

California sunshine? Isn’t he a ginger?

And they’ve got Richard Seymour retiring; isn’t that first round urgency?

Any word on what number Ronnie will wear?

He has wore 23 since Auburn but that’s taken by Chris Houston.

#23

The Lions should force Houston to give Brown #23 as punishment for playing like such a PUSSY on the corner when it comes to playing the run. Look at the 49ers tape, he cost us big!

First round pick for Carson Palmer?

What in the hell are they doing in Oakland? He’s 32, been out of football this whole year and his last couple years were nothing spectacular. 26 td, 20 ints last year,

Shaun Hill

We should have been on the phone with the Colts as soon as Manning went down (Hill or Painter????). Hill has trade value. Stanton can back up Stafford and we can get another pick out f the deal.

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad we still have Hill on our team. But that trade was so lopsided in favor of the Bengals.
