Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

I think it's safe to say...

They were right. All of them the talking heads on ESPN the much more respected NFL network I think they had it right. Jamie Dukes, Marshall Faulk you name them all had a viable point that alot of Lions fans failed or refused to see. Our Offensive line is a joke! Not even like a Lewis Black damn that was funny joke. More like a Dennis Miller your iritating shut up joke. I am now giving Matthew Stafford all the credit for his lack of sacks early this year because he was getting rid of the ball. Taking alot of hits doing it as well. Factor in Backus and company getting owned by Jared Allen and you name them theres a few theorys I had that seem to be becoming fact every sunday.

For one Staffords inconsitency increases every week and the offensive line seems to be doing more than there share to help. We were led to belive by some that this  O line was built for the passing game but it seems the more passing we do the worse they get at it. I have tried for many years to support Gosder in his growth because I do beilive he has the attitude and power to be a mean offensive lineman. For me to keep supporting him I have to start seeing something this year. Guys like Corey Hilliard aren't suppose to beat out a 1st round pick but he's damn close to it at this point. Dom has been around forever and he's the leader of the line. Coach Schwartz said not long ago that Dom was one of the best he's ever seen at reading defense and making changes to coverage. That maybe true but I think alot of fans would agree that his abillity to actually play the postion is falling off quickly. Rob Sims well Rob is the only guy on the O line I don't have anything negative to say about right now. He's strong, reliable and smart I wish we had 4 more of him. Jeff Backus a pro bowl left tackle I'm not even sure he's a starting left tackle anymore. Between his age and the lack of consitent play has showin me that 76 is who he has always been. A slightly above average tackle who has a tendency to make mistakes at bad times. How #9 can feel safe with him at his backside is a mystery to me. I thought adding a quality gaurd would really turn his career around it only improved his game a little. His contract is running up and he's not any younger I will be the first guy on the left tackle bus this next off season.

I feel like I am forgetting someone. Jason Fox is hurt so it's not him. I got Gosder,Dom,Backus even Sims was mentioned. Who is it oh I know....PETERMAN!! Stephen Peterman has become to me like Newman is to Jerry Seinfeld. Irritating and you constantly feel like he's out to screw you. On the entire roster I honestly feel Peterman is the worse starter on the team. He can't run block to save his life, To be kind his pass blocking is suspect but what kills me the most is the penaltys. I am tired of hearing Petermans not so bad, especially when he's healthy. He is healthy now and still blowing it. Worst part is finding a quality right gaurd isn't to difficult I bet 23 teams have a guy on the bench close to or better than Peterman. He has to go! For everything I have said ( which yes is ALL opinon) not one man on this line is a pure run blocker something I feel we despretley need.  Say what you want about Best having big runs here and there when it comes to the power running game these guys cannot do the job. The attempts to power the ball in the redzone is embrassing and Leshoure alone was never gonna fix that.

We are a 5-1 team and I am ecstatic about that. Schwartz always says we can play better. We can be a better team. Once we build a quality offensive line there will be no stopping us. Until we add 2 or 3 young starting guys up front we are only is good as Matthew Stafford. Stafford is only as good as his O line will let him be. I'm not much for rants as you guys probably know. I for one am done overlooking this mess upfront. Mayhew deserves all the credit he gets for helping build the best defensive line in the NFL today! When it comes to offense in the trenches we are getting spanked like an 19 year old in her first adult film. It won't be fixed this year but 2012 is going to have to be the year we adress this problem. There isn't much of a choice at this point. It's the weakness of the Lions and it sticks out like plumbers crack. It's just disgusting to see but it won't go away.

Rant complete, I'm sure there is plenty of room for jumping on me. Before you do that remember last year was last year and stats are sometimes the worst possible way to judge an offensive line. Sacks only count when the QB has the ball. Late hits and hits while and after release don't count. As always GO LIONS!

Profiler I completely agree

I despise Stephen Peterman and I have always said he should be replace (not usually in such kind words). I think Dom is past his prime by a few years and Backus is certainly on the decline. I think Sims is a solid player. And I feel like Hilliard and Fox have decent potential. I think we will see an overhaul of the O-Line next year.

i said this after the KC game

we have to address this in the draft i think we could move gosder inside to RG he is a better run blocker than pass blocker from what ive seen and we can move fox to RT i just dont think he is the answer at LT hopefully we can get mike brewster in the first and move up to get nate potter from bosie in the 2nd what do you guys think

Thank you... Great analysis

It’s funny about the Schwartz comments about Raiola, but he praises his guys to try to get more out of them, even if they suck. If Raiola is the best he’s seen, we need to get him to the eye doctor. He’s been in the league forever, and never in the same sentence with the word “Pro-Bowl.” The only thing he’s ever won is Lions’ Good Guy Award. He calls good plays, it’s said… evidenced by WHAT I say. Make him a line coach; just get him outta there, along with Peterman, and see if Backus is any better at RT. Sims is the only good one.

I think Hillliard would do better at LT right now, and I can go along with trying Gos at RG. I believe Backus and Raiola being starters today has more to do with the bloated salaries they are paid, rather them being the best on the team.

Who knows anything about Fox… he’s always mysteriously injured. I don’t believe he’s played a snap in 2 years. He’s a mammoth player, but a wasted one.

Hopefully, Stafford survives the season, but I can’t see how he will, as no one has reason to respect the Lions running game, and everybody is going to be teeing off. Yeah, I believe our top picks should be devoted to building an OL

From what i've heard and noticed

the run game is most definitely second concern to the pass game with our management. Having a decent run game seems to be an extra plus. Which in a way i understand being that this is a pass first league now, however it would be nice to be looking at second down and 6 opposed to second and 11 because our backs get pushed backwards every run play.

Emotions... cloud reality.

I credit opposing defenses, and place blame more on the OC and OLine schemes than the players themselves.

Did you watch the Bears/Vikings game?

Do the Lions even have any TEs?

How about the decision to release the one and only FB?

Bottomline is… if you’re QB is getting pummeled every time the offense had 11 personel on the field (1rb and 1TE)…. if you don’t adjust, then WTF do expect when protection doesn’t get better????

As far as I can see, the Lions have 3 damn good TE’s and JJ joe bobby Sue is starting to look good also… why would you not run the same plays with 12 and 13 personnel? (1 rb, 2 or 3 te)???

Sometimes you have to change up the look and the protection schemes…. something that stayed constant on Sunday.

you bring up some good points

They do indeed seem to lack in adaptability to counter a number of different plays. It’s like Liney has thrown his hands in the air giving up on this line and just says “go do whatever you can” lol

As far as the TE goes Liney again is keeping true to form, refusing to use a TE in protection for the most part. It’s disgusting… Then again you can also blame Best for having next to know instinct to try and chip on his way out. At least momo will do that and Im curious to see if Kwill does much for protection. Billy Ray Johnny Joe got in some good lead blocks in the pre season at least but don’t recall him ever being called back in reserve.

I like good FB usage but rarely ever saw that from Felton and just don’t see Liney wanting to employ that so we aren’t missing much. It’s like he’s just kept the checkdown to FB option is all and given up on lead blocking calls.

I tried to write a fan post this week about my continued disgust over Liney’s play calling. I decided it would come off as sour grapes in the wake of a loss and decided to wait until after a victory before posting it.

I completely Agree

The thing I would bring up is that our FO needs to come up with some order of who’s first to go, and who can stay around another year. If I had my way, Raiola and Peterman get replaced this darft/FA period. For one, there’s no real depth at either position- whereas at the tackles we have Hilliard and Fox backing up, admittedly an unknown quantity in Fox’s case but still, it’s depth. Secondly, this is the most glaring weakness in our run offense- the middle. Third, Minus the occasional Backus False Start, its where a good chunk of the penalties come from- of the drive-killing variety. Finally, TEs can be used to mask the weakness of the Tackles in chip blocking or sealing, whereas with no real fullback, our middle of the line is weak. Just my opinion

LeShoure flourished behind arguably the worst offensive line in the FBS at Illinois. Now? Now, I wish they had drafted Penn State center Stephen Wisniewski, the only true plug-and-play center in the draft.

Wisniewski was drafted 58th by the Raiders.

Agree with CLF. Watching that Bears game when they finally decided to get some protection for Cutler was shocking. They had like 8 people back to block and 2-3 recievers but it gave Cutler time to make the right throws. I’m sure we all believe that Stafford can be a better QB than Cutler. So lets change up our protections and give him some security back there.

Another shocking thing from that Bears-Vikings game was Christian Ponder. That kid looked pretty good back there under the circumstances. Hell he has better pocket awareness then Stafford.

good point about the Bears

There’s another coach not usually willing to employ much in the way of extra protection schemes. Whether he was forced (likely) or had an epiphany it really is something the notable change when he changed his usual MO. Oh to hope Liney can have such an awakening!!

Very fair assumption

I’ve been all for getting new o-line personal since last season, but knew short offseason would cause a problem with that and it did. So I was hoping the new coaching staff would be the difference with this group and to be honest, they have shown signs of brilliance at times and with a 5-0 start to the season it is kinda hard to be upset but last week they were exposed. Still not to upset because they can bounce back this week and all will be forgiven in the Lion nation. Just hoping they can get us through this season without letting Stafford get hurt and deep into playoffs, who knows maybe a superbowl! I believe Mayhew and Swartzs will address the issue after that.

Just to play Millens advocate

I agree we need to improver our line, we need a new tackle, RG, and center. Bsckus can switch to RT and maybe Gos to RG. However there are many good teams over ther pass few years that have had O line issues. Last years the Bears, Packers, and steelers had problems. The key for this year is to scheme adjust until we can make roster changes

ha! Millens advocate!! that itself earns a rec!

You bring up an interesting thought, how would Gos do at RG? I’m not convinced Backus has the remaining physicality to man the RT position tho. As it is we have a hard enough time setting up the run on that side, with him? forget it.. He needs the room to move and use some finesse and even that is diminishing.

You nailed it at the end, the key is indeed to try and mix it up and adjust until there can be personnel changes. I just don’t know that Liney has it in him….. What do you think about Fox getting some time once healthy and ready?

Well we wont be top 10 in the draft

So no stud LT or RT. Maybe a Guard or Center. I’m not by any means a scout or draft wizard but it seems to me if we wanna stud LT we are gonna have to trade for one. I jumped on the “Our OLine needs help” bandwagon a month ago. Watching our line get mashed to the middle on every run play, wheres the RB going to run? NO lanes when theres a mass of humanity all crammed up in the middle and the edges contained? I agree full heartedly

it's tough to try and count on getting the LT we'd want via trade tho

and you sure can’t count on a 1st yr HC tossing one aside due to being overweight very often. I think we’ll likely be rolling the dice on the developmental LT we already have. If we were to draft another I’d expect it to remain of the project variety.

It will be interesting to see if there are any changes for the Falcons game.

I really doubt we will see any personnel changes on the O Line, but we may see some different play calling and formations to improve the protection for Stafford.

In six games the Lions have given up eleven sacks; ten of them in two games. So in four games they have given up one sack. The Lions have played some excellent pass rushing teams; Vikings and Niners are tied for third in sacks and Cowboys are eighth in one less game. Even the Bears are 13th, tied with us. I am not making excuses, just stating facts.

Regarding upgrading of the line in the future, we need to see some development from Fox and Culbreath. They were drafted for development and in 2012 I hope we will get to see something from each of them. I know Culbreath is on the IR and cannot practice at all this year, but we need to develop from within, not hoping for an FA or a new draft pick to improve this line.

My 2011 Lions season prediction: 12 wins and 4 losses. I made this prediction the week after the New England preseason game. It's looking a little pessimistic right now.

I wish I had read this before making the post right above this. We likely have our 2012 LT on the roster now. Personally I think we’ll be seeing Fox sooner than most would expect. At the latest I think he’ll be in after the bye. This is the first week he’s not on injury report so let’s hope he gets in some quality practice.

Where is this comming from????!!!??

I know you’ve had problems with the line and Peterman for sure; but I don’t think they done anything outside of the Vikings game to warrant being called a “joke”. I mean, we check the best DE in the game IMO in Peppers to such a slight impact, it was ridiculous.

And while they haven’t been great from week to week, Stafford is taking an average amount of hits (we know they’re doing pretty decent in the sack department). Last game was that bad IMO. San Fran has been playing very well on D and had a bunch of sacks. Stafford held on to the ball A TON, was indecisive, and made some bad decisions that lead to some of those hits and sacks.

While the line could be more consistent, it’s been decent in the passing game. It hasn’t been as bad in the run game as it was early last year, but it’s been close IMO. That’s where this thing needs to change. I think we’re all in for multiple upgrades on the line come the offseason, but that’s then, not now. The ESPN pundits know little, and while they were vaguely right – I’m not jumping ship wholesale on the line.

I'll agree with you about Stafford's pocket performance this week.

He did not seem to have the awareness that he had been showing earlier in the season [ie. the Dallas game in particular]. I think that the Niner rush appeared to be coming from more inside [ie. Justin Smith] than he had seen in earlier games.
I am not sure what the play calling was on those sacks, but it looked like he had nowhere to go with the ball when the protection failed. Like you rames, I would have expected him to move and heave the ball out of bounds [at the least] on some of those plays, rather than stand and wait for something to open up. The Safety in particular seemed to be a combination of terrible blocking, a long developing pass play called, and Staff’s inability to recognize and react to the breakdown in front of him. Not his best moment.

Define 'avg' amount of hits

it is not emotion our QB has been pressured more than all but 3 other teams this year. Stafford has done an excellent job of covering for it by quick throws but it is a weakness that other teams see on film and will continue to exploit until we do something about it.
Nice post Profiler and I’m glad Del and some others see what professional analysts have been saying for awhile now. Some of you know I record every game and rewatch them a lot and you can see our oline does not get it done, you can ignore it and use sack numbers but go back and look how many hits our QB’s take and how many pressures and how it affects our entire offense. Staff is starting to get JoeyBluesky eyes and I can’t blame him.Even Schwartz commented about it after this past game.
Backus could be moved inside or to the right T spot but we need players particularly on our right side. This isn’t bashing our team just being aware of our needs.

i take the term joke as being used with a bit of creative license

while the line hasn’t been so much of a joke it’s been kind of like a bad pun perhaps. Staff has been getting increased preasures and it seems like mroe and more each week. Forget about having a pocket to step in to, it’s often non existent. The right side has been day dreaming in the run game with both Gos and Peterman seemingly taking up the hobby of day dreaming thinking about retirement or something while playing. Backus seems to have lost a step and a lot of strength. He’s been having a hard time keeping guys more than an arms length from the pocket.

The lack of sacks hasn’t been from a lack of pressures. I give Staff a lot of credit. Still, he’s been making more and more errant throws. I had been thinking it was a hand issue but I’m wondering if it’s a bit of fear rattling his brain.

But at the same time, those that love to kiss Mayhew’s ass about all of his greatness, likes to forget the fact that he’s ignored the Oline for two now injured fluff pieces and traded up for these two oft injured fluff pieces.

Serious strategic drafting mistake IMO

Ugh.

From his drafting and offseason moves we’re 5-1. I could understand this boo hoo Mayhew if we were 1-5 or 2-4….but come on. We’re winning.

I knew someone would try to use that record as a prop.

5 and 1 is great. 10 and 6 is my expectation for this season.

The point is after starting off 5 and 1 will we be able to live and die by comebacks and the big play? Or will we continue to lose needlessly by not being to control the football when needed, and you know damn well with loads of tape out there now teams know how to defend us and bracket Calvin due to having zero respect for our running game.

Now that we got off to a great start by passing the ball is see a QB under increasing pressure weekly and a QB who’s inaccuracy stems from an increasing case of happy feet. An actual pro running game would make matters way easier on Stafford.

To not have one after 3 years is something that should be looked at hard.

I'm agreeing with you on the O-line

We need to replace pretty much the whole line in a few years, starting with Riola and Backus. Maybe Fox is his replacement, maybe not. Maybe we trade up in the draft to get Jonathan Martin, who knows. I think Mayhew knows for certain that we HAVE to get O-line help now, but the fact of the matter is, he’s brought this team together from shambles in two years, and will only continue to get better.

Well put!

Jahvid is coming under increasing family pressure to shut it down for the rest of the season, so he may be out for awhile; probably not the whole season though. We saw the disrespect for our running game by SF… daring us to pass on them, and while the Lions don’t rely on the run, without any threat of it, there will be any increasing assault on Stafford, that the OL will not be able to contend with, IMO.

You are “delusional,” and you are right on the money, as far as teams’ beginning to follow a consistant blue print on defensing Detroit, unless they can establish some kind of threat on the ground, to force adjustments to the plan of an all out pressuring of the QB.

that's a speculative article written without real source as far as I've seen

who specifically has said he should call it quits for the season, name a name. I’ve just seen the blanket statement that he’s been told it without anything further. I believe it was made up…

And that record is

a result of other players covering for weakness in that oline. No one wants the Lions to win more than me but to see them go further into the season and post season we have to address areas of need..and they have been areas of need for awhile now.

You guys are kind of on the money about needing a running game

But if we want to see Megatron single covered again all Staff has to do is start targeting Nate and Titus more. You can put 6 and 7 back there but when Staff is making D’s respect all of the weapons out there like Sheff and the 2 already mentioned names, teams won’t be able to keep that bracket on Calvin.

just as I had a feeling sooner or later you'd be using those RB injuries as a prop...

Hindsight has proven those moves to be questionable at worst. How could they have known LeShoure would have this injury? You can’t tell me you knew it would happen. The question is, was there an OL they liked available at the draft position? Likely no, since they didn’t draft him. Yes, there were some guys taken that looked good. Some haven’t worked out yet and we’d be far worse off or actually more likely just the same cus they wouldn’t have cracked the starting lineup yet.

Your wrapup on this post is puzzling tho, you’re knocking them for not having established a running game in the reply where you knock them for trying to improve the running game!!! wtf… I do realize the lack of OL is a huge factor in our running issues but yet it isn’t everything to it. Having a guy with LeShoures type of talent would have gone A LONG way to developing the run game imo.

relax, we’re well along in the rebuilding process and just because the blocks haven’t been placed as you, or I, had envisioned them doesn’t mean the architects don’t have them in the plans.

For the record I liked Jason Fox alot coming out of Miami

I think the potential is there for him to start on the O line. He has had injury issues and not really anytime from him to prove that he deserves to start. He is up in the air I really can’t judge him without him getting some playing time. I highly doubt Cultbreath will ever start you never know. Until he is healthy next year we will never have any idea what he can do.

He's a mystery

Man, I can’t even recall if Fox played any snaps in preseason. Wasn’t he IR’d in 2010?

The only way you know he’s on the roster is because he’s a fixture on the injury report. It’s a shame… he’s so massive sizewise. I hope he has the heart and demeanor to play pro ball. Perhaps he’s just one of those players whom the Lions want to bring along slowly.

When they drafted Culbreath, he was projected to be a project-type player, but at least we saw what he could do in the preseason, which wasn’t embarassing. Culbreath suddenly ended up being IR’d, without any previous landing on the injury report, if I’m not mistaken. I’m confused about a lot of decisions made about this season’s OL makeup. Without Fox starting out on PUP for the first six weeks, you figured he was at least ready to practice.

With all the OL brought in, Peterman still being a starter is the biggest mystery to me. You can’t help from thinking that there has been a bit of a fear to make any changes, as under normal conditions, they have been adequate for now. I don’t know… maybe this is still normal, but this unit is not getting any better, and hopes that it will are dissipating with some fans.

What I can not understand is

what is different in the 2011 Lions from the 2010 Lions that had a running game in the last 6 weeks of the season?

2011 has been one more year of decline for the Oline.

Last year the line was serviceable in pass protection but the run blocking was awful. Another year has gone by and the problems grow for our line. It is time to address this and stop acting like the line is underrated in everyone elses eyes. Draft some more linemen early next year and solidify the line or the problems are just gonna get worse.

How about actually running a true NO Huddle offense

Instead of getting up to the line and sitting there for the entire clock how about speeding up the pace. What good does it do to get to the line and let the D catch their breath? Might as well huddle and get the right play. And for all of you shooting down the non-existent run game, when we are in the shot-gun most of the game it makes it hard to run no matter who you are. I mean jeesh we are in the shot-gun almost half the game, and when we are not we are still in a single back formation, you can only run so many plays out of those formations.
