Time to start Poaching Practice Squad RBs?
We have all heard the recent news on the Lions RB position. And everyone has been throwing names around on which FA RB we should sign. I'm not a fan of Aaron Brown, or Tiki, or Portis.... ect ect ect.
I think our best option might be to pick up a RB from some other team that is deep in the position, and just might have a gem sitting around on their Practice Squad. Profiler brought up Joique Bell from Wayne State earlier. I agree with him, that I think he could be serviceable in our system.
All this got me thinking and I decided to check out the Practice Squads from the other 31 team. Here is a link to the most updated PS Rosters that I could find.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_NFL_team_rosters
After looking all this over, I also think John Clay from the Steeler's PS and UofWisc Madison, could help. 6'1" 230# and a 4.7 Forty. He had 1,000 yrd plus years his last two in college.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Clay_(running_back)
Or if you want someone a little smaller and faster, how bout Evan Royster, 6'1" 210# All-Time leading rusher at Penn St. And a 6th round pick of the Washington Redskins.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evan_Royster
What do you guys think of these 3 guys and do you think they could help with depth for the rest of the season. I know that they aren't gonna be able to step in right away. But we got 10+ games to go and we need help at the RB spot. Also if you see anyone else that intrests you on the list above, feel free to mention it.
Go Lions!!!!

Whatever happened to PJ Hill for Wisconsin ?
He was a monster in college. I know his rookie year he got put on IR not sure after that. He was a powerful runner with some good speed also.

If I follow the PS rules right, he went on IR last year and is no longer eligible for PS work.
Didn’t make a roster this year, and is playing in the UFL currently.

Bell vs. Ian
While Bell has some NFL experience from 2010, wasn’t it all on S/T? Ian on the other hand, hasn’t any experience, but would be a quicker read with the Lions playbook, and time is a factor here. I expect Jahvid to be out the next two, and then following the bye week, possibly back for the Bears. Who knows… at that point, he might prove out to be a better fit by then than Keiland, or even MoMo. Morris is getting close to ZERO on the ground, but still good in the passing game… we need a rusher!
If not, nothing lost, but I have this gut feeling that his potential was better than other’s reputation for 2011. It’s an opportunity to for a second look, if there isn’t any fear, in possibly admitting that perhaps a mistake was made. I’m baffled over this fascination with Brown, while Ian’s production in the preseason is totally discounted. Having not been targeted in the passing game, we haven’t a clue about whether he has any potential there, or whether he has blocking skills. After 6 weeks with SF, I’m sure a scout out there would have some answers about those aspects, but you have to think “SF-style RB.”
Any idea why James Davis was signed to practice squad, and then moved to practice squad injured? That makes him unavailable for this season, right?
Enjoy your stuff, Latif.

you bring an interesting point in the Bell vs Ian comparrison
that since Ian has the scheme familiarity he should be able to come right in and perform to his abilities whereas Bell would have the learning curve. The question is does Bell have a higher upside or at least the “grass is always greener” type appeal? Or are these just fan driven thoughts and the brain trust has other ideas altogether lol!

Bell's 2010 statline is all defensive
I’m not sure he has experience as a runner, but we sure need help on coverage teams, E. That seems to be why the Lions replaced Harrison with Buckley though. This is all academic now; decisions have been made.
So, I guess we’re all set now… we got Clapp back lurking on the PS, and a Philly S/Ter to back up Morris and Keiland. Unless the Eagles have any more rejects, let’s hope Jahvid is deemed healthy in less than 4 weeks. Since he’s not even attending meetings, this has to be a concern. Hopefully, Keiland will turn out to be a surprise, now that the leash is off, and with Morris, let’s hope that dog still hunts, or else we’re going to lose a few more than we want to. But he Packers didn’t have much of a running game last season, and we’re due some good luck. We’ll just have to believe that all is well, and beat Atlanta this week, while keeping Harrison in our prayers.

Good balance, vision, and athleticism.
I say bring him in for upside potential alone.
Btw – on a side note, Big, I want to thank you for making it possible for me to watch that game last weekend online. I can’t find that website on my comp. now, though. What’s that name again?
Did you guys see the size of that chicken?
Not a problem

I like Bell too, would love to see us pick him up off the Saints P. S. would kind of be a payback for them poaching Turk McBride too
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
I wouldn't mind picking up a burner
Even if he’s a slot receiver. Just somebody we can stick in the backfield and run him on sweeps and such such and let him get to the outside. There has to be somebody on a practice squad that runs a 4.3, Lol
I agree! I think we should make a run for that Titus Young guy from Boise State!
That kid is a burner and would fit perfectly in our system!

Ya, but I highly doubt we ever see him in the backfield.....
If we haven’t tried it yet, doubt we try it now even with our RB situation the way it is.
I'll agree 100% with you if we don't see him used in that role this week
Somehow I’m expecting a few looks at RB from both Logan and Young this week to see what they can deliver. Whomever shows the hotter hand will get even more touches.

If Best goes on IR
that will open up 2 slots. I say we cover all basis and Sign Ian Johnson and Joique Bell to the 53. Also John clay is an option. I wanted us to spend a low pick on him in the draft.
That would ease some pain to be able to pick up all three some how.
Get Well Soon JH
John Clay...
is at the top of my wishlist… Pitt has a stable of backs from Mendenhall all the way down to Dwyer and Redman. I like Bell as well and also wouldnt mind bringing back KSmooth as a last resort.

I liked the quote listed, “why run around a guy, when I can run through him”. I like that attitude. Could be the hard nosed runner we all semm to want.
I like him already, and I never heard of him before. Must have some Clapp in him.

we should find this guy
http://nashvillecitypaper.com/content/sports/lamarcus-coker-outruns-his-past-find-redemption-lessons-learned
Dude is fast as hell. But all in all i say we give Aaron Brown a call
ohhh I forgot about that guy!
He is zippy, not sure how talented tho. I looked into him and find he made his way to the Calgary Stampede in the CFL. The problem is he’s on the IR.
If Best were to go to IR or something like that (which I can’t see happening..) I’d think they’d have to pickup Brown. I’m actually surprised he’s not on some other team already. He’s gotten some looks from teams but no signings.

Brown isn't a between the tackles runner
And isn’t really a true “scat-back”. He doesn’t have blazing speed, just good speed. Doesn’t surprise me he hasn’t been picked up yet. He really was just a good fit for our offense. Oh ya, and he can’t remember plays for s***.
ya? I thought his speed was pretty good, sure not elite tho.
The learning plays part, that’s the issue. I had renewed hope for him this offseason with his work in the passing game. He seemed like a great good backup plan to Best. You must be right to some extent tho since he hasn’t gotten anything other than a name on an emergency callback list.

Aaron's such a secret, he's not even on anyone's practice squad...
certainly available; along with a bunch of other young guys out of football.

He is not allowed to be on any practice squad.
He has too many games on an NFL roster to qualify.
My 2011 Lions season prediction: 12 wins and 4 losses. I made this prediction the week after the New England preseason game. It's looking a little pessimistic right now.
Didn't realize that, NL. Well, I think he's either good where he is now, or there are better options.

I keep hearing IAN JOHNSON...
don’t know what I like best about him… the fact he was our best rusher in preseason, or the fact that he’s been on the 49ers practice squad for 6 weeks. THINKING…
o-KAY… Casting stats to the wind, I’d be nice sending Harbaugh a message!

Between Joique Bell or Ian Johnson
I think either of those guys could be productive enough for us to still make a run for the playoffs
Let's sign TO
I’m sure he can play RB better than the guys we have healthy, haha
