Lions Sign Eldra Buckley, Place Jerome Harrison On Reserve/Non-Football Illness List
Detroit Lions running back Jerome Harrison is officially out for the season. The Lions placed him on the reserve/non-football illness list this morning, which is basically the injured reserve for non-football issues. Since Harrison's season is over because of a brain tumor, the Lions placed him on that list.
To fill Harrison's spot on the roster, the Lions signed running back Eldra Buckley. He worked out for the Lions yesterday (some people mistook him for Laurence Maroney) along with an unknown running back who didn't finish the workout. The Lions decided to add Buckley to the active roster after the workout.
Buckley entered the NFL in 2007 as an undrafted free agent from Chattanooga. He spent the first couple years of his career on the Chargers practice squad and joined the Eagles 53-man roster in 2009. He spent 2010 in Philadelphia as well and was let go during the final round of roster cuts this year.
Buckley will likely spend most of his time with the Lions on special teams. If another running back goes down, though, he would likely get a chance to get some carries.

I've liked what I've seen from Keiland and I liked what I saw last season from Morris
I’m fine with having these two split carries until Best comes back.

Read about this earlier on ESPN
based on comments I read from Philly fans, he’s a solid ST guy, but not very good at actually running the ball. Anyone know anything about this dude?
North and South
Lions face big challenge: a more effective run game to make the playoffs. The defensive will be effective provided offense improves time of possession. Stafford’s success will continue to diminish without a run game. Falcons offer big test and a preview of season outcome for our offense and, ultimately, team’s success. Let’s get it done!!

What about names like
Ladell Betts, LenDale White, Brian Westbrook, Aaron Brown, Correll Buckhalter, Larry Johnson, Julius Jones, Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, Clinton Portis, Tony Richardson, Steve Slaton … i mean cmon man!!

just because you’ve heard of them doesn’t mean they’re still good. I mean Larry Johnson couldn’t even stick on the Dolphins…
I listed 12 rb’s with proven skills…other than Aaron Brown who is fast but hasn’t proven himself like the others… tell me this guy the lions signed is better than all of them… i don’t think so.

the past is irrelevant when it comes to evaluating talent today. I mean Correll Buckhalter hasn’t played a game since 2008. Getting a player because of his reputation is stupid. Just look at how that worked out for the Vikings with McNabb
plus this seems to be more of a case where they’re going to let the RB’s currently on the roster take over most of the carries and he’ll contribute in other areas. Are any of those guys you listed better than Williams or Morris for example? Because otherwise you’re just using a roster spot on a guy who won’t get in the game and who won’t play on special teams. At least this guy will play special teams.
Yes
I think Clinton Portis alone is better than both williams and momo

They say he is healthy now
And had a very strong workout for the titans and bengals.
I think we need to pick him up for depth at the least but he could very well show he still has it for more in practices and games when he gets a shot.

stong workout?
and didn’t make either team.

I'm not saying get rid of MoMo
I’m just saying pick up Portis instead of the unknown they just signed.
by Michaeljames on Oct 21, 2011 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions
you’re ignoring the fact that Portis wouldn’t play on special teams unlike this guy.
What’s the point of signing a guy who won’t get in on running plays and who won’t play special teams?
Your assuming
That he won’t be allowed to carry the ball in games? Your delusional. Portis in a 9 year career has almost 10,000 yards rushing and that includes 3 injury filled seasons where he only played 8 games in 2006, 8 in 2009 and 5 in 2010 then came back and ran for 1262 yds in 2007, 1487 in 2008 after a major injury. Now he is healthy again and he isn’t a creampuff that gets injured easily either… he is a punishing rb and injuries happen in football but you don’t jut count out the talent because of that.
by Michaeljames on Oct 21, 2011 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions
BTW
MoMo in a 10 year career only has 3352 total rushing yards and that includes this year so compare that to Portis with almost 10,000 rushing yards in 9 years and it shows the talent difference… plus Portis is Healthy now and no creampuff.

If Portis was an option
Mayhew would have signed him.

Morris is a career back up...
Portis is a career starter. That’s why there’s a difference in rushing yards.
Give me Morris any day over Portis. If Portis was really that great, he’d already have been signed.

I also like Williams and Morris as our 2 backs
I would of rather brought back Brown if he was avaiable
That's all fine and dandy
But that’s what Williams is, a grinder who picks up tough yards. I’d rather have my north/south runner way in the 230lbs range rather than under 210lbs…
It don't matter

What about Stepan?
I wonder if Logan might get a few carries now? I saw him play in college as RB fulltime. Certainly not a powerback, but maybe a swing pass option?
There is a fan post about other RBs
There are many young players out there on practice squads. Like Bell, Ian Johnson, Clay, and even a 6th round pick and the ALL TIME rushing leader for PENN STATE. I would like to give any of those guys a chance I’ve this first round roster cut guy.
As some have already said I’m sure Buckley will play a lot of S/T. It will be interesting to se how they rotate backs in given that we can use Logan too. Also means the Lions feel confidant on the talent level we have at the position and wanted more depth and utility.

Sorry for going off topic
But since other are throwing out names and I don’t feel educated on the topic.
Why are we not interested in Kevin Smith?
From what I have been able to read he is still available, wouldn’t cost much, is relatively healthy, has experience in the system, and would use the return to showcase his talents for next year. Short term solution, Win-Win for all.
Like I said, educated me, I remember hating that the guy was always injured but seems to me the right solution.
like the other 20 or so FAs floating around
it wouldn’t hurt to bring him in for a work out in my opinion
I say
take a look at them all.
The Lions are a pss fisrt team from here on out.

personally, I think we're hitting the RB panic button
Do we need an improvement, yeah! In both the run blocking and actual rock running. But the RB market is worse then the housing market, a lot of big names worth very little! But Mayhew has earned our trust with this 5-1 record and I’m not going to second guess him here. Our running game will not be elite, but overall they will be effective enough for us to compete.

I'm not hitting the panic button........yet
I just think it wouldn’t hurt to give work outs to some of the guys floating out there.
you may see something in one of them that someone else didn’t. it may also be good to know in case someone does go down and we need someone quickly. I mean right now the RB ranks are a bit thin until Jahvid gets cleared to play.
I agree, it never hurts to bring guys in for a look!
In fact, I was the one pushing for them to bring Slaton for a look. I just don’t think we are as thin as people think. Body wise, yes we are thin, talent wise we are on par (in fact I believe better) then what is currently avaliable. I’d rather bring in a small name as a ST’er who makes chump change them a big name who is out of gas as an expensive 3rd stringer who doesn’t know our system.
Let’s give Houge a look, isn’t he a LB converted from RB? I’d rather have him or Logan back there! Lol

I'm actually surprised Davis was a PS addition
Instead of activated. While doing my FF research, I recall reading that the Texans believed that Ben Tate was the next Arian Foster and Davis was the next Ben Tate. The three of them plus ward was the reason for the Slaton release. Either I’m not recalling the article properly, or he fell short of the Texans expectations. Either way, in time, maybe he’ll be a diamond in the rough.
But for now, due to the RB market (or lack there of) I’m content with what we have.

Maybe you didn't hear that Davis was put on the list as injured.

ahhhh, thanks, no I didn't hear that!

what an odd article that must have been!
Do you happen to recall what article it was? I’d be curious to see how they explain such odd statements about Tate and Davis.
Individuals should protect themselves. Governments can't protect individuals from themselves, it's just impossible, otherwise they become a tyranical state. -Ron Paul
yeah it was on the FF report on the NFL app before the start of season.
I ran across it as I was looking up Ben Tate cuz he was drafted to one of my auto-draft teams. It was under Tate’s News links. Saying when Foster was injured Ward and Davis might get the carries instead of Tate if Davis continued to progress.

and the article wasn't odd at all
It was an analysis of who in the texans stable may or may not if been worth picking up.

How does being on IR for a non-football illness differ from the usual sense?

You’re going to like Eldra. He isn’t going to blow you away but he runs really, really hard. He can play FB if you wanted him to. He is an ace special teamer. And he is a pretty good blocker. He’s a good role player that I would welcome back onto the Eagles roster.
