Lions-Cowboys Slolights (slo-mo highlights)

Hello and Fuck Mark Sanchez!

Thanks to Sandman7773 and The Den again.  Link below, and some thoughts after the jump.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kW85AvdUOks

Star-divide

Some thoughts.

1. Jahvid Best is still running well, and is a very good running back.  He's struggled a lot with blocking problems and trying to fit through holes that are not there.

2. Matthew Stafford has looked shaky in the first half of the last two games and floated (and shorted) a few balls each game.  However, he is still making good decisions.  It's just that the arm isn't doing what the brain is telling it to.

3.  The weakness of the defense has been the d-line.  Who would have ever guessed that!  Playmakers all over in the back seven.  I think the problems in the first half were largely scheme-based, not bad play by the team.

Most impressive player: Calvin Johnson.  He is always open, even when triple covered.  "Hey Matt, throw it up here (gestures up)."

I agree about defensive scheme

There is one point in the game, just after a catch by Laurent Robinson, that you can see Chris Houston clearly trying to tell the Lions coaches he wants to press cover Robinson instead of laying off and surrendering the pass underneath. When they FINALLY allowed Houston to press Robinson, he got his pick six as a direct result.

I don’t know if that was a rope-a-dope by the Lions coaches or not, but playing off the receiver clearly was not working and was directly responsible for the success of the Cowboys offense. I am getting this feeling that the coaches want the Lions to play soft coverage until the defensive line can establish some pressure, then they start closing on the receivers and pressing more. The problem was that the defensive line never really got much pressure until very late in the game. At some point you have to realize that your scheme is not working and adjust, and it took much too late for the correct adjustments to be made.

You realize, if I had said this (and I have this season)

I would be strung up as a hater!

I completely agree. The D line is not going to get pressure if the CBs are playing off. Everyone says, The d line makes the corners better. It goes the other way too, damn it! Strong CB play will make the D line look better too.

People seem to forget that our d-line got a lot of coverage sacks last year.

Which gave them an inflated expectation that opposing o-lines would just implode every down — sometimes it is, it’s just not getting on the stat sheet because the D didn’t get that extra 0.2 seconds to get there.

I wish I could say, looking at the d-line play, that they weren’t getting it done. They’re getting it done, just not fast enough.

I'll agree that the D-Line is getting there at times

but usually not before the opposing QB can get rid of the ball. I just don’t think they are collapsing the pocket (especially up the middle) as well as they did last year. Avril outside the RT a lot last year, which forced the QB to step up in the pocket. Not only have I not seen as much forcing of the QB to step up, but when he does the middle isn’t collapsing as consistently either. I’m not sure what is causing this difference from last year, but I certainly have been disappointed with the drop off so far this season.

by Adam Keith on Oct 3, 2011 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but it's not a zero sum situation.

The QB does not get rid of the ball at the same time always. The QBs are not getting rid of the ball at the same time they were last year, they’re doing it faster. What we’re seeing is the product of sheer respect for this DL and a complete focus on making sure it doesn’t single-handedly beat them. QBs are throwing it faster and more quick to bootleg because of us, WRs are trying that much harder to get open and the coverage isn’t staying tight enough to give the DL its coverage sacks.

I’ve seen the QBs forced to step up in the pocket several times this year, it’s resulted in almost-sacks and QB scrambles at least once in memory. I’ve seen QBs just barely get rid of it before they get laid out. Naturally, if they’re not getting the opposing QB before the ball is gone, it’s not a sack; that’s why the opposing QB is getting the ball gone in the first place, it’s a causal relationship.

There’s no way a DL will ever live up to the expectations placed on it. It will still be good this year, probably best in the league, but people are trying to turn it into a myth with comparisons to the steel curtain et al (which in isn’t even as good as people think it was, because of the mythos around it.)

I thought they were excellent against Minny

But yes, teams – very notably the Chiefs at first and Cowboys for much of the game did a great job scheming to take away our strengths. Did you not see the 13 screens in the 1st qtr!!! haha, made that number up, but it was a shit load. Past that were quick slants, flats, and occasionally max protect on 3rd downs to take a shot down the field…that’s how you play us…teams were kind of stupid last year IMO

I definitely think that to some extent it is scheme

Opponents are using more screens against us for sure, and I’m sure there are other plays designed to not allow our pass rush to be as dominant as it was last year, but I simply don’t think we have been as effective at collapsing the pocket and winning as many one-on-one battles during the rush. It may be that there are some blocking scheme changes to help neutralize the D-Line, but I’m not sold on that being completely the difference. We just watched the Cowboys’ line handle the rush pretty well, and their line is suspect. Maybe we have become more cautious in the rush in order to not be as susceptible to screens and the like.

And the Whitten TD?

that was embarassing. I am starting to think we are going to need Fairley , and the timing is just perfect. we nned more sacks. So much momentum created from sacks. Stafford was running for his life, way too often.

19-0

Love how Skip Bayless was all over our jock

and then when Fairley went down, he changed his playoff prediction to 7-9! Welp, I guess we must be a pretty shitty 4-0 then if Fairley would be the reason we made it to the playoffs…

Recked you h.b. !

Love these videos. I did not see the game at all so it will be interesting to see the best of the Lions in this.

Thanks for posting!

Something I hadn’t originally noticed: (at 5:15) Phil Costa put one hell of a block on Dez Bryant during the Carpenter run-back.

Thanks buddy!

as a bucs fan i cant be more thrilled that the only team that beat us is 4-0

Its ridiculous how much hate or lack of love you guys get from the media, i mean your 4-0 came back two straight weeks of 20 point defecits at half, i think you might go 16-0 and espn might say that your not getting into the playoffs… jesus christ!

BTW: Calvin Johnson seems to think hes playing in college the way hes making defenses look.. incredible!!!!

Thanks for stopping by and for the recognition.

I wish the majority of Lions fans here were as positive as you. Good luck the rest of the season. I think we will see each other in the playoffs.

If you anyone hasn't seen it yet,

there was a video link after the slowlights video was done playing to Schwartz’ “Learn the fuckin’ rules!” over the refs mic at the Vikes game.

Hey that's a timeout, I can play right? yeah, get me--get the F-- Help me up...I can throw the ball if you need me to throw the ball...

Have to admit, that is one of my favourite on field lines from the Schwartz.

This is a coach that Lions fans can identify with.

I'll admit

The best parts of those slolights were the 2 pick6s.

Nothing like seeing a defense suddenly turn into a hitting machine.

oh

and Vanden Bosch had a nice block on the Houston pick6, I watched that one a few times.

That Grew catch at the start was crazy.

Greeeeeeew!

He’s looking a lot better this year than he has. Maybe we’re just not depending on him as much on 3rd downs and stuff, but his drops…wait, what drops?

Oh Yeah!!!

He had a couple in the opener

but since then he has been a pretty reliable target. Boy, is that nice to see!

Everybody relax about the D-line...

We haven witnessed 3 out of 4 away games, they are getting pressure with four. Their lack of blitzing LB helped int Romo Twice. You are not going to lead the League in sacks with a 4-3 d-line who only blitzes occasionally.but it makes your LB’s and Secondary look better. Sound familiar?

Oh, hmmmm...

I guess when you put it that way…

Oh Yeah!!!

by hb.koolaid on Oct 4, 2011 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree Bret. That was the whole idea of building the D Line that we did.

Trading for Corey, signing KVB, drafting Suh, and building depth by drafting Fairley and Young and trading for Lawrence the intent was to build an incredibly strong line. Especially one that would be outstanding at rushing the passer.

They are not beating their blockers on one on one for the most part, and not really defending the run much better than last year either. The O Lines that we have played have not been outstanding, but I would not say that any of them are terrible as all but the Vikings are in the top twelve in least sacks given up.

This unit needs to get better. As you say, perhaps the home field will help them. The next three games are at home and against three of the worst O Lines for allowing sacks this year; Bears are 31st, Niners are 27th, and Falcons are 26th. It is put up or shut up time.

"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."

We're about to face

…the Bears, 49ers, Falcons, Broncos, Bears- all teams in the bottom half of the league in pass blocking (per PFF)

if the OL doesn’t make a big impact in those games, then it’s time to worry. By the way, the only other team we’ve faced in the bottom half for pass blocking (Minnesota), our front 4 destroyed.

My thoughts after watched the video

The only problem I had with this slowlight was the lack of a a good shot of the fans. While they let out a collective cry while all their Texan hearts break as they realize the Lions just came from behind to beaten their Cowpies. Like the ViQueens slowlight did. (I could just eat their tears up for dinner).

On another note, someone needs to make a Megatron slowlight part 1 of 4 for this season. I figure if they don’t do it soon, it will be a couple hours long.
