Donohue, Logan - special teams problems
I have been to every Lions home game as well as the season opener in Tampa Bay and I want to offer a couple of ideas that I think would improve our special teams. IMO, special teams are our weakest area so far.
First, I think we need to make a change at KR/PR. I wince whenever I watch him call a fair catch as the ball touches the kicker's foot. Watch the Denver game abd you'll see what I'm talking about. I haven't seen any flashes (or real effort for that matter) this year from him. Unless he can suddenly grow a pair, I suggest we possibly give Nate Burleson a shot. Hasn't he played that role in prior lives?
Second, I suggest we start shopping for another punter. While watching his kicks at Ford Field, Donohue shows incredible height but almost no distance. Again and again. Time for the F.O. to admit they made a mistake choosing him over Harris and begin a strong search for a replacement.
I see these as critical moves going into the second half of the season and would appreciate other viewpoints.

Donahue won the battle due to his...
Hang time.
Hang time allows the coverage to get to the ball.
I agree he needs to work on placement… but I have not seen too many bad punts from Donahue.
On the KR/PR…. I agree… Change it up! Maybe the other team will kick the ball a different way? Who knows.
Try a reverse!… put 2 PRs back…. Something… But I agree the KR/PR have been a bit…. Boring.

Donohue
I have no problem with the way Donohue is kicking so far. He’s tied for 4th with 13 kicks inside the 20 and leads the league in kicks downed with 11. He has been the victim of some poor special teams tackling and injuries to the unit (Rashied Davis, Stovall). Now that’s not to say he can’t get better but considering he is a rookie making the minimum salary, I would much rather have him and the Million dollars he saved, than Harris.
Logan on the other hand seems like a waste of a roster spot. 90% of kickoffs are going for touchbacks and he seems perfectly happy to fair catch everything on punt returns. I agree that you could put Burleson back there and not lose any productivity, at least on punts. Titus Young could probably handle both jobs if asked to and free up that roster spot.
Numbers would actually suggest Donahue is a decent punter
His average per punt is in the lower half of the league, but also 8th in the league in punts inside the 20, 6th in the league in punts inside the 10 yard line. All of this is as a rookie too.
Also, Stefan Logan, even with so many touchbacks, is 8th in league in kick return average. He’s returned 11 kicks so far in the season, which is a bit low, but I would much rather take the ball at the twenty and let the offense do its thing than a returner who tires to make a play and ends up giving the offense a long field to begin a drive. Now, he is near the bottom of the league in punt return average, so maybe we can make a change there, but I doubt the Lions will. Logan is a career returner who knows what he’s doing. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to put in a starting receiver in that role.

Considering
That half of those guys wouldn’t be starting skill position players if their teams had a better option, I think that kind of makes his point.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
That and the fact that
Josh Cribbs and Reggie Bush don’t start for their teams….he’s really showing his football knowledge.

Cribbs and Bush
BOTH started for their teams last week.
Right
Bush because DMC is hurt and Cribbs because its the Browns…point proven

Point proven??
Bush has started all 7 Dolphin games this year. Yeah, I guess that does kind of prove my point. Geez Latif, do a little research before you try and be condescending. lol
My mistake there
For some reason, I was thinking Michael Bush…yes, Reggie has started all seven games, thought thats not saying much when Daniel Thomas is basically getting most of the carries

Sounds like a recipe for a team with a losing record.
Also, how many returns has Branch had this year?
NO HOMO!!!!!!!
And
Lance Moore, Patrick Crayton, Ahmad Brafshaw, Percy Harvin, Steve Breaston, Leon Washington, Darren Sproles. Yeah, you’re probably right.
:-)

Since when did Patrick Crayton, Leon Washington, and Darren Sproles start? Also, when did Ahmad Bradshaw start returning kicks or punts? That leaves you with Lance Moore, Steve Breaston and Percy Harvin, two of whom are career returner….great job proving your point there

I'm aware
That some of these guys are not starters, but I think its relevant due to the critical roles they play on their respective offenses. Im also aware that some of these arent wide receivers. Every one of them though have a critical role and also have been called upon for PR/KR duties at times, some more than others. That’s the point I’m making. Burleson has done this as well and I for one think it’s worth experimenting with…
by Dave Marshall on Nov 1, 2011 7:05 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Burleson's career KR and PR numbers:
Kick returns: 22.6 yards per return
Punts: 9.8 yards per return
and he hasn’t returned in over three seasons
Logan is doing better returning kicks right now and is averaging just a yard less on punts

You can also add in....
Antonio Brown, Davone Bess, Jacoby Jones, Ted Ginn, Denarious Moore, Mike Thomas, Wes Welker, Eric Decker….to the list of starting WR’s who have returned multiple kicks. And even with those names, I didn’t list starting WR. Did that prove his point to your liking?
Antonio Brown is starting because Hines Ward is injured, same goes for Jacoby Jones. Denarius Moore doesn’t even start. I’m not sure if Tedd Ginn does either when Braylon Edwards is fully back. Mike Thomas has returned a grand total of 8 punts this year, Decker hasn’t returned one since week one…if you’re gonna try to prove a point, please try to do with some relevant number and or facts…

Feel free....
to check NFL.com for official games started for each and every one of these players. Sorry I don’t have your definition of a starter since you just use whatever you can to try and prove your point. I like actual facts though.
Crayton, Washington, Sproles.....
All have at least one start for their teams this year so technically they could be considered starters.

Technically being starters and actually being starters are two very different things

if somebody started a game, they would be considered starters.

This argument is so stupid that I’m not even gonna bother with this again…you wanna feel like some dude that started one game in the NFL is a starter, then go right ahead…

this argument is a bit redic, imho...
This whole thing between you guys boils down to semantics. Who’s a starter, who’s not… Meh, move on.
Going forward, my view point is this: Logan has wheels, he’s a good returner who has been huge for us in the past but has appeared a bit gun shy on punts so far this season with a couple premature fair catches (ie. see the Denver game. There was one that you could tell he wanted back immediately because he had a ton of green in front and around him.)
For me, I’ll take his current limited production with the hope of him returning to form OVER risking injury to our #2 WR who plays a huge role in our offense 10 out of 10 times… I mean, who is to say that we’d gain anything but risk out of it if Burleson is out there. No one can promise me he’d do better than Logan. If the coaching staff has tapped Logan for the position and wants him back there, it’s good enough for me.
If you are in an elevator and there is a button marked "Laser Bay Two"... You push that button.
yeah Logans fair catchs
at least 2 of them were returnable in the Denver game. Im not to concerned about it if our offense can move the ball like they did against Denver. But it is concerning when they can’t move the ball
Maybe
Titis Young. I just think we need to change. No offense to anybody. No need to insult. Just an opinion!

I think there was some news about him getting his shot in camp
Either way, I just think its a bad idea to switch your KR/PR when he’s been one of the best in the NFL the last couple of seasons and is still doing pretty well in kick returns. I guess I just trust Logan more than others.
House of Spears | My Detroit Lions/NFL Blog

Obviously
We are on opposite sides of the fence on this one. I see him tentative and calling fair catches way too fast. Maybe just PR since KR is becoming fairly irrelevant most of the time anyhow. Just looking for a little excitement, a fresh attitude, change…
Still not a Donohue fan either….

My take on special teams has always been that it should be a unit that doesn’t screw up. As long as the opponent gets the ball at the twenty and the Lions get the ball at the twenty, I’m happy.

I think explosive
Special teams make a HUGE impact on a game, and if it’s consistently exceptional it can make superior field position the norm and an occasional electrifying return it can change or bolster momentum. So once again I see us with differing viewpoints.
by Dave Marshall on Nov 1, 2011 10:11 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Hard to believe...
but I think Logan has the only lost fumble for the Lions this year. He was special last year but the new rules have basically made him expendable. I just don’t think he gives us anything more than somebody like Burleson or Titus would and that roster spot could be used for a 9th DL or somebody that could make more of a difference.
Meh
Rookie punter who’s shown a lot of flashes – I like him
Logan has proved to be a great option, just give him some more opportunities.
The boys are back in town!
One thing nobody has mention in regards to Logans KR
he is in the top 10 without getting that one long return in. He actually has the shortest “long return” of anybody in the top 10. Which says to me the guy is very consistent. Factor out some of the other returners one big run, and their averages are pretty average.
Give me the consistent returner every time.

So he averages 26.5 yards per KR...
But the Lions don’t start at the 26.5 yard line. He generally starts the return from 3-7 yards in the endzone so you have to subtract that to get his starting position. He may get them an extra 2-4 yards from just downing the ball? So does 2-4 yards, 1.3 times a game (based on 11 KR) justify a roster spot? Especially when you factor in that he Fair Catches almost double as many times as the next guy (20-11) and he is in the bottom half in PR avg.
I like the guy but I see more value in keeping a guy like Flu active (when everybody is healthy) to rotate and keep pressure on the QB, than that extra 2-4 yards.
Every Returner Has That Stat Then
Subtract every KR 2 – 4 yards from his average, hes stil in the top 10 just like everyone else in the top 10. He will be fine as hes a proven Returner.
by BennieBladesFan on Nov 2, 2011 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions
So what youa re saying is...
that you do not value a returner that can take the ball from six or seven yards deep in the end zone, and consistently get out to the 20 yard line? Consider that every time he chooses to take the ball out of the end zone that is also an opportunity for him to break a big return.
What is it with lions fans that make them devalue guys that are consistently good, and also have the potential for big plays, for guys that are inconsistent but flashy? Lions fan never seem to be satisfied with just being good. We have to have first team All-Pro players at every position or we just aren’t good enough.

Logan
is more than just a kr/pr
"I like to win all the time, so all the time I play with myself."
Not really
He does a reverse every so often, but we have other receivers who can do that without making it as obvious that we are running a reverse.
Also
covers punts and kicks very well
by BennieBladesFan on Nov 2, 2011 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions
With Ekejiuba, Davis, and others out losing Logan would be catastrophic for kick and punt coverage.
On top of special teams value, Logan is a good decoy on offense. The defense pays attention to him when he’s on the field. He’s not used much but he consistently gets good gains when he touches the ball.
I’ve heard multiple Lions players say Logan is the hardest working player on the team. What would it say to the other players if the Lions cut him? I think he justifies a roster spot just as much as if not more than Ashlee Palmer, Rashied Davis, Stovall, Wendling, Phonz, Doug Hogue, and a couple others do at this point.
I don't believe that Logan has started all this fair catch stuff on his own
and I also don’t believe if he wasn’t instructed to play conservatively like this they’d be tearing him a new one over it. Perhaps he’s carried out the direction to a fault however, but it seems to be the intention overall. As JC points out, when he is returning he’s been fairly consistent.
As for Donahue, i’m not overly impressed but at this point the only formalized opinion I have on him is there’s going to be at least 2 punters in camp next spring. I suspect he’ll be fine tho.
If you are disappointed it is only because you have chosen to set your expectations at a level that was never reasonable in the first place.
--> Don't blame the Lions. Blame yourself for not keeping your perspective.

Donahue's numbers aren't the greatest, which even Schwartz acknowledges....but
He’s a rookie, and rookies get a free pass. He’ll get better just because that kid has a hell of a leg.
Donahue has been solid
I wish he had a little more distance on his punts but he is more of a height guy. We have faced some dangerous returners and I for one haven’t seen our rookie punter put us in a situation where I said to myself, “WTF is he doing?”
He plays Lions football, aka smart football. He is not a flashy punter (do they have those) by any means but he appears to be getting the job done. Plenty of upside with this kid.
As for Logan I too have been disappointed this year. But again he is doing a solid job and not making many mistakes. He deserves a roster spot and I would like to see him brought in for 2-4 touches on offense per game.
OK, let's get a few things straight here...
Fist let’s talk about Stefan Logan. Yes, he has made a few fair catches that he could have returned and all of a sudden we have people that want to toss him under the bus? Get the f**k real! Logan himself realized that he had called some bad fair catches. That is why he hit himself in the helmet after one of them. You are not breaking any news that Logan doesn’t know himself. After that one really bad fair catch, he returned almost everything. So he already addressed it and people need to BACK THE FUCK OFF and see what he does with it.
As for his fair catches, Jim Schwartz also addressed that. He pointed out that when the Lions deferred the kickoff they did that so that the receivers would not be looking back into the sun early in the game. He also pointed out that making that decision also forced Logan to look into the sun while making his returns. He felt that two of the fair catches by Logan were strictly because he had trouble picking up the ball out of the sun.
On another fair catch, Schwartz said that Logan saw a player flash near him out of the corner of his eye and he mistook them for a Denver player when it was actually a Lion. Did you expect Logan to take his eyes off the ball to make sure of that? People need to get it into their head that you don’t know what is going on all the time. If Schwartz is unhappy with Logan then he has alternatives on the roster. Until he does, you can be assured that the coaches feel that Logan is the best return man we have. Live with it.
The complaints about Donahue are a bit more based in truth, but they are still much too premature. Donahue has not been all that bad. Yes, he has made a few mistakes, but he is a rookie for heaven’s sake. Why are people so quick to toss people under the bus on this site?
Donahue was selected over Nick Harris because he has a better hang time on his punts. The numbers that Donahue is putting up are very comparable to what Nick Harris did the last couple of seasons. If people are getting all flustered about net yardage, they also need to realize that is a function of the ENTIRE return team and not just Donahue. I have seen some horrible coverage on punts and it was not Donahue’s fault when people miss tackles and cannot get off blocks.
Give the kid a chance to see what he can become and don’t be so quick to toss away players because you are impatient and foolish.
