Lions Notes: Update On Jason Hanson, Ryan Donahue
- Update on the Lions' special teams injuries: Jason Hanson "looks good to go," according to Chris McCosky, and Ryan Donahue reportedly has a quad strain. Although Donahue was holding for Hanson on field goals, Dave Birkett reports that the Lions are going to work out punters.
- Kevin Smith was practicing as the third running back earlier this week.
- Before signing with the Lions, offensive guard Leonard Davis talked with the Titans and Bears, according to Anwar Richardson. Smith said he talked to five teams before landing in Detroit.
- Here's a great anecdote from Dave Birkett: After not returning to the Lions after last season, Smith decided to rent out his house. Mikel Leshoure, who was drafted in April, is the one renting it. Because of this, Smith is stuck living with a teammate rather than in his house now that he's back on the team.
- Jim Schwartz explained the decision to bring back Smith earlier in the week. Smith also spoke about returning to the Lions.
- Stephen Peterman doesn't seem upset with the Davis signing, mainly because he thinks Davis is a "good player" and he thinks the added depth is a good thing.
- Davis got a one-year deal prorated at the 10-year veteran minimum.
- This week, the NFL moved the Colts-Patriots game in Week 13 from Sunday night to 1 p.m. Also, FOX protected the Packers-Giants game, according to Dave Birkett, meaning the Lions-Saints game is a candidate to be flexed to primetime. One of the other games that could potentially be flexed is the Bengals-Steelers matchup.
- Matthew Stafford has been wearing gloves in practice this week, likely to test them out in case he decides to wear them at Chicago on Sunday.
- Ndamukong Suh and Chad Ochocinco tied for first in the Sporting News' player poll on the biggest trash-talkers.
- Chris Harris said it will be "fun" and "weird" playing the Bears, his former team.
- Nick Fairley finally seems like he's 100 percent healthy.
- Dave Birkett reports that the Fox pregame show on Thanksgiving will be broadcast live from Ford Field this year.
- The announcers for Sunday's game will be Thom Brennaman and Brian Billick.
- Calvin Johnson is on the ProFootballWeekly midseason All-Pro team.

Best news of all ...
was Jason Hanson being good to go…. HUGE !! … hopefully that means 90% or better.
And more importantly
I don’t have to find a backup kicker for my fantasy team.

Same
except it’d be on two teams (for the #1 overall kicker in the NFL (screw you John Kasey!)

Glad to see hansons good
At this point in his career i dont think they would put him out there if he wasnt 90% or better. and weird story about smith and leshoure!
Lions 2011 "Luke 18:27"
You would think Leshour would move out
It wouldn’t be that difficult for him to rent something else, he has to be a single guy.
If he rented the house, he is in the house. I am sure there is a lease agreement.
How would you feel if you rented an apartment and your landlord turned around after a couple of months and told you to move out because he needed your apartment?
My 2011 Lions season prediction: 12 wins and 4 losses. I made this prediction the week after the New England preseason game. It's looking slightly optimistic right now.
additionally
who knows how long Smith will be with the team. Probably not as long as LeShour.
To be honest, I think I'd be more upset
if my landlord showed up and was all “I’m moving in with you!”

It would make
for a good sitcom.
You could call it “The 2 RB Set” or maybe “2 Guys and One Roster Spot”
“The IR Boys”
“Gimpy and Gimpier”
I'd definitely ask to pay less rent.

Good to hear
Nice to hear Hanson will be ready to go.
I also heard we might work out Matt Dodge, the famous punter who kicked to Jackson last year.
I hope to the Steelers destroy the Bengals this week and its a terrible game so they don’t get move to Sunday night haha
I have a feeling that might happen
Pittsburgh is gonna be angry after the way they lost to the Ravens Sunday night

Just like last time
And I like the Bengals, but I dont think they are a 6-2 team. I think they have benefited from a weak 1st half schedule. Their 2nd half schedule is so hard it makes me cry. If they pull off a 4-4 record for the last 8 games I would eat my shoe. I see 2-6 more likely.
*full disclaimer – My shoes are made of fluffenutter. Hard to walk in, but easy to eat.
Info on SOS for cincy
They have a .421 SOS, Steelers have a .462 so not exactly close but still not far apart. For cincy of the 4 2-loss teams they are sitting at 3rd. For Steelers they are sitting at 6 out of 8 3-loss teams. So they are both on the bottom of their SOS. I would consider this game a good one.
Does anyone know
Since the Pats/Colts game will be moved to CBS, is it more likely they will move a CBS game into the SNF time slot?
I think there are probably several options
Cincy/Pitt and Tennessee/Buffalo would be the options from CBS most likely; from Fox, theres the Falcons/Texans, Lions/Saints as the 2 likely candidates

I don't think there is a rule
but they AFC for AFC swap might up the chances of the cincy/pit game a bit…. of course it still depends on how the next two weeks go.
I'd bet CBS would protect Cincy/Pitt anyways

Lets see what Peterman says when he is watching the Packer game from the bench
"To have won the Indy 500 and the championship is very special." - Dan Wheldon
PCP 4 LIFE
Whether you believe it or not Peterman is not the problem on our O Line.
He has arguably been our best lineman this year. I have defended Backus for the last two years running, but I cannot say that he has even played below average this year. He has been brutal far too often this season. Dom has also fallen off from his below mediocre level of play, and Sims is not far behind them.
If Davis is starting for us this season, someone will be injured or we are in trouble.
My 2011 Lions season prediction: 12 wins and 4 losses. I made this prediction the week after the New England preseason game. It's looking slightly optimistic right now.
ProFootballFocus says that Peterman has been the Lions' best OL player this year.
“Detroit Lions: Last year, guard Stephen Peterman had the worst overall rating of the Lions’ linemen, and this year he has the best. He had the sixth-lowest run block rating in 2010, and is now right around the league average, while he allowed 32 overall pressures last year and just seven this year.”

Frankly
I think the fact that players have WILDLY different results every year tells me that PFF’s methodology is garbage.
Agreed

Yes he has
He had 2 dumb penalties at the most. He also played injured last year, most likely because even injured he was the best available guard. Gosder was out so Hilliard was already filling in for him. No wonder he stunk last year, he had a messed up foot. We need Leonord bit time, one injury at guard we would be in trouble.
I'm sorry
But you guys must have the blinders on. No disrespect intended, but the stats do not tell the whole story in the case of Stephen Peterman. One thing I am now sure of is that Leonard Davis WILL push Peterman for playing time, and I’d bet on his job as the starter before long.
A motivated Leonard Davis is STILL a pro bowl guard. A motivated Leonard Davis is a far superior all around blocker than Peterman. Why wouldn’t we utilize that if in fact the guy still has something left in the tank? At the very least, Schwartz already said that he expects Davis to contribute. To me that means they are impressed with him and think he is already good enough to plug and play in situational roles. How good IS the “best” offensive lineman on our team? Does that really say something about Peterman, or is that saying something about the rest of our offensive line?
I see Peterman as an average run blocker, always have. I thought he was average last year, even when he had the injury. However, my “average”, and even the “average” guard statistically, is clearly not good enough for an NFL, playoff caliber, team. If Peterman were a dominant run blocker, then the stats would show a lot more rushing production on the right side of the line. It just doesn’t. He is not a good run blocker. Leonard Davis has always been known as a great run blocker. His pass protection has slipped a bit, but it is still above average to good. Peterman is a good pass blocker, there is no doubt about that. So you have a choice between a RG that is an “average” run blocker, but a good pass blocker, and a RG who is a great run blocker, but an above average to good pass blocker.
Once Leonard Davis learns the playbook and gets up to speed, I believe he will start. I believe this because the Lions want to be a great team. They clearly understand that being one dimensional on offense is not going to get the job done. They want to balance the attack a bit more. Leonard Davis will provide the push we need on the right side of the O-line. Kevin Smith is back, and I think he’s going to light it up. I disagree with all of the naysayers on him too. He is a solid receiving threat out of the backfield, and if he is 100% healthy and looking as good as they say, I can see him rushing for 5-600 yards over the last 8 games. He’s versatile, and he can run between the tackles as well. With a run blocker like Leonard Davis on the right side, K-Smooth might be the comeback player of the year.

average run blocker
is correct this year dawg and hey if at some point Davis outperforms him or Sims for that matter of course he should start. In years previous to last year Peterman was an above average run blocker and an average pass protector, That seems to be reversed this year. Peterman is not nor has he ever been worthy of all pro consideration. He has been a solid player who gives his all game after game. I just don’t think he deserves all the vitriol he gets here because of last years poor performance caused mainly by the fact that we didn’t have anyone to sub in for him to allow his foot to heal properly. I do agree that Petey being the best we have is quite an indictment on the oline as a whole. In fact we are hurting there I’m not sure what the answers are and hopefully Davis turns out to be one of them, For now I’m skeptical.
Aws for Kevin Smith I hope for the same performance you do. I don’t expect it but I hope to be surprised,

incidentally
so far Petey has a total of 4 penalties none of which are false starts. Since false starts were never much of a problem prior to 2010 and they obviously aren’t now it pretty much confirms that his false start problems last year were directly attributable to his foot injury.

Well, lets give Peterman some credit
I had no idea he played with a foot injury last year, that particular injury had to hurt. I also like him more after reading his comments about committing to a team and playing hurt. He sounds like a good guy. Now I’m going to be rooting for him. He HAS played good this year. Glad we got big Leonard though, the guy is a house.
LMAO, these sporting news polls are getting out of hand.
I feels like some kind of organized joke on Suh. Let me get this straight, Ndamukong is tge dirtiest player in the league, the biggest trash talker in the league, & the 4th most overrated player in thr league lol. Who the hell did they poll? Jay Cutler, Andy Dalton, Tim Tebow & the entire Atlanta Falcon offense.

now these polls are making sense!
They did it for Savy, they did it for Horton, they did it for each other, they did it for us. I give you the 2011 Stanley Cup Champions....The Boston Bruins!!
It's very simple

They need to put some restrictions on how many times someone can vote on these idiotic polls.

Guys's been in the league a year and a half
He hasn’t played against half the teams in the league yet. How can he be all of these things?!?! Which is why I ask……seriously, who did they poll? It doesn’t make any sense but I did get a great laugh out of it.
