NFL Hands Out Fines To Matthew Stafford, Nick Fairley, Rob Sims, D.J. Moore

The NFL has handed out several fines stemming from last Sunday's Lions-Bears game. On Thursday, it came out that Lions defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch was fined $7,500 for a late hit and Bears wide receiver Earl Bennett was fined $10,000 for wearing orange shoes.

Today, we found out that Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and offensive guard Rob Sims were each fined $7,500 and Bears cornerback D.J. Moore was fined $15,000. Stafford's fine was for his takedown of Moore, who was docked twice as much money for his late hit on Stafford that caused a bit of a brawl and resulted in an ejection. According to Dave Birkett, Sims' fine was for "jumping on the pile late."

Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley was fined $15,000 for his roughing the passer penalty, according to Jason La Canfora. Fairley took down Bears quarterback Jay Cutler by driving him into the ground after a pass had been thrown, so it's no surprise he was fined $15,000.

There's no word right now on if there are other fines from the Lions-Bears game, but it wouldn't surprise me if there are still more to come given all that happened last Sunday.

UPDATE: It appears the NFL has decided not to fine Julius Peppers, Lance Briggs and Ndamukong Suh.

Fairley's fine is the only one I think is merited

DJ Moore was ejected from the game, that was penalty enough for him. The rest of the fines are BS to begin with.

I think Fairly's was the only BS one!

All the others were from intent to break rules, while Fairley’s was from intent to not screw up by missing a chance to sack Cutler for a safety! He was already penalized for being slightly late on the hit, and as a rookie, I think he was exited to have a chance to make a big play. THAT"S not fine worthy in my mind!

by Meathunter on Nov 18, 2011 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

OK, it was pretty late!

His hit actually was pretty late, but I’m not sure if he really knew that! Maybe it was a rookie mistake of being too exited about finally having a chance to make an impact an not being aware enough. I guess he’s the only one who knows the truth of the matter.

by Meathunter on Nov 18, 2011 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

getting kicked out of the game penalty enough?

it doesn’t make any difference in a game that’s already over. the purpose that served is creating precedent. If anyone in that game needed their pocket lighter, it was Moore.

by freywagg on Nov 18, 2011 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

Stafford should have been fined 30k for trying to break Moore’s fucking neck.

I'm not trolling

and stand by what I said. He pulled a bitch move and should pay for it.

by Riddlah. on Nov 20, 2011 5:28 AM EST up reply actions

Was he trying?

I doubt it. But anyone who grabs someone’s face mask and tries to spin him around and tackle him, especially for no reason, deserves a big fine. He wasn’t trying to tackle anyone and the play was essentially over, so the only conclusion one can draw is that he did it out of frustration, which is wrong.

Haha

Stafford’s takedown = $7,500
Vanden Bosh’s late hit = $7,500
Earl Bennet’s wrong colored shoes = $10,000

Way to have your priorities in order, NFL.

It does seem a bit weird, huh?

But it was Bennet’s 2nd fine for the shoes. So there’s that.
To be honest, I personally think Bennet should have had an extra fine for being an idiot. Why are those shoes so important that you need to drop $15,000??

What is 15,000 out of his million dollar salary.

He will continue to wear them until they suspend him. I just don’t get why the NFL is getting worked up about what color shoes you wear.

Agree the NFL shouldn't care about shoes.

But the fact is, it is a rule. If you break it, you should be punished.

MIllionaire or not, I just don’t see how the price warrants the reward. It’s stupid IMO. What, does he run faster when he’s wearing them? Easier for Cutler to see him? I just don’t understand why it would be worth the fines (not to mention the fact that he looks like a moron to the public)

As long as he’s giving money away for free pretty much, I wish I could put something in his locker so he’d send me $15,000 – I got some student loans to pay off…

The NFL is the owners, not Roger Goodell.

The owners decide the rules, so blame them.

That's why 3 years after their career is over, they end up broke.

its the second time he wore the shoes hes basically saying FU NFL I can wear any shoes I want on your field!!

I'm okay wit hall of 'em.

Though I admit, I don’t remember the thing with Sims. Fairley’s seems a bit high (I actually thought KVB’s was hit was worse than Fairley’s) but it was on a QB so I guess it makes sense.

I’m glad I don’t see Suh’s name up there. There was a lot of clamoring on other sites for Suh to be fined for taking Cutler’s helmet off. To be honest I really didn’t even think that was a penalty. Just football. I don’t think Suh was “headhunting” it was just a matter of Cutler going down just as Suh was grabbing him.

Fairly is the only won which really matterd

But then again, how much is 7,500 for Staff when hes making Millions. Don’t like the way the NFL is going. This is a physical sport and hits should be handed out. Sure, Fairleys hit was fine worthy but I don’t like the way the league is going.

Kind of shocked when Suhs name wasn’t up there, then again, what do you think the meeting was for. He must have really intimidated Goodell.

Fairley's hit was the most innocent of them all!

Fairley was thinking he was about to secure a sack for a safety and didn’t want to srew up and let his people down. You could tell there wasn’t any intent to break the rules, just intent to sack Cutler. All the others showed intent to break rules. Fairley’s was the only fine that I believe was unwarranted and I’m very surprised he got one. After all, he was already penalized!

by Meathunter on Nov 18, 2011 3:33 PM EST reply actions

Fairley's hit would have been fine if it wasn't so blatantly late

He hit him way after the ball was out and drove him into the ground.

This was just the 3rd (4th?) game Fairley has played in, he still has some getting used to the way things are run in the NFL…having said that, He is learning fast!

Actually I just read an article about some crazy study...

…that said the old leather helmets may protect against concussions just as well as the new helemts! Crazy, right?

I don't really like the Fairley fine myself...

I don’t think he really even saw Cutler throw the ball, and he didn’t have enough time to stop after the ball was thrown…

That said, at least he showed that he is trying hard to impress people…and that he is capable of getting through to the QB. I like that…:o)

No fine for Briggs really burns my ass.

The Bears were hunting for heads from the start. First the Peppers hit on Calvin, then Conte’s hit on Morris, finally Briggs shot on Calvin.

My opinion is that the Bears were looking for trouble. They deserved more than what they got.

No slogans. Just win!!!

by drgarnett on Nov 18, 2011 8:56 PM EST reply actions

Fines, in itself are stupid.

The pro’s is the only level that you see fines in. If the NFL thinks that the shoes are such a big deal, why not just not let him play in them. That’s how it goes in High School and College.

Same for the late hits and such. That should be handled on the field or in the standings, as some sort of sportsmanship tiebreaker.

Fuck the NFL.

NO HOMO!!!!!!!
