With the Bye Week a look at the 2012 season (cap, FA, Draft)

Since we are on the bye week I thought I bring up a post about our position for salary cap, FA's and players that are nearing the end of their contracts.  Now for those that do know with the new CBA agreement the NFL has a minimal salary that increase quite a bit.  According to the last CBA proposal that was ratified the players get 15,000 more per year with step increases after the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, and 10th years playing.  The actual amounts are the following:

Year R 2nd 3rd 4th-6th 7th-9th 10th
2011 $375,000 $450,000 $600,000 $685,000 $810,000 $910,000
2012 $390,000 $465,000 $615,000 $700,000 $825,000 $925,000
2013 $405,000 $480,000 $630,000 $715,000 $840,000 $940,000
2014 $420,000 $495,000 $645,000 $730,000 $855,000 $955,000

Which I copied from a steelers blog site.  Now that you know lets start work on the salary cap after the jump.

Star-divide

The salary cap has increase about 7 million per year under the old CBA.  Now to figure out what the new cap number will be will take some time.  However I do let you know how I came up with the figures.  First is the TV Contracts are on wiki and with the current agreement at 55 percent and the other revenue at 45 and 40 percent of revenue I can back track it.  The difficult part will be is to find what the revenue was setup with the old agreement.  Now as such there is a few items I found out about.  What the current CBA says is the cap can only be 48 percent of the total revenue.  An additional .5 percent after 2014.  So that means my mega number I been saying with the TV contracts could be lessened.  In any case the league is averaging 175.5 million before TV per team that gets split 40 and 45 percent depending on the type of revenue.  Now given all of the info of benefits makes the final partial split at 43% of other revenue.  Given that money increase by 7 million the first 2 years of the last CBA and then 12 the next year there is some numbers to gleen from that.  That number would be the percentage of rise in income each year in non TV money.  Since TV money is stationary and does not rise each year it helps in finding that 43 percent number.  From what I found the non TV money rises roughly 6 to 9 percent a year.  Since the down turn in the economy I am betting on a 6 percent increase in non TV revenue for next year.  Now here comes some more numbers to get you guys going crazy.  First is the 2012 cap number is actually a combination of both the 48 of total revenue and the amount of increase in total non TV revenue.  With the numbers given of 9.4 billion at the time of the lockout and simple math puts that number closer to 9.5 billion its easy to see that this year they did not pay attention to the 48 percent rule.  As a result TV revenue is so high that the non TV money is not keeping up with the 48 percent.  What that means is that although a 6 percent increase in non TV money will increase the cap it will not be enough to give more cap space to the teams.  As a result the total cap for 2012 after a WHOLE BUNCH of formulas and more than enough words to fill a Tom Clancy novel it will be around 146 million.  With the cost of benefits going up by the ROI the cap for player salaries will be around 123,286,000.  That is actually lower than the current Lions cap however there is some play in the numbers as they Lions have 3 million in possible loans.  The loan number would be an additional 1.5 million for next year cap to make it 124,786,000.

Now after 680 some words to explain the cap for next year lets look at the funner side of Free Agents.  Currently we have 34 players signed for next year.  We need to have 53 players on our rooster however only the top 51 players count for the cap.  Now getting to the 53 we have the draft as well.  Now in most drafts we get 7 picks and the the 2012 draft we shall have 7 picks as well.  We have not traded away any picks in the draft and are receiving a pick from Seattle from LY pre-cut Mayhewing of Seattle for a "late round pick".  Given that we ARE losing a 6th rounder because of some B.S. the league came up with I figure we have picks in round 1 to 5 with 2 in the 7th.  As a result I figure we at best can get 5 players next year in the draft that will get on the rooster.  I highly doubt we will see any moves this year but never say never.  I think though for our purposes we should go with 4 picks.  As a result that lessens our need for signings to just 15 players.  I should also mention that only our #1 and #2 rounders will count for the cap unless we sign a UDFA.

Here is a list of Unrestricted Free Agents for 2012.

QB's - Drew Stanton

RB's - Jerome Harrison and Maurice Morris

WR's - Rashied Davis and Maurice Stovall

TE's - NONE yeah! :D

OL's - Jeff Backus, Corey Hillard, and Dylan Gandy

DL's - Cliff Avril and Andre Fluellen

LB's - Stephen Tulloch, Bobby Carpenter, and Isaiah Ekejiuba

DB's - Eric Wright, Brandon McDonald, Vincent Fuller, and Erik Coleman

LS - Don Mulbach

As for Restricted Free Agents for 2012 we have the following players

RB's - Eldra Buckley and Stefan Logan

DL's - Sammie Lee Hill

LB's - Ashley Palmer and DeAndre Levy

I am not sure who is likely to stay or not but that is the list of players.  We will resign roughly 15 of the 25 players but I think most will get resigned but have to battle for rooster spots with rookies and others.  I will say this though Mulbach, Logan, Levy, Backus, Avril, Carpenter, Tulloch, Wright, and Morris are ones that if resigned will get to be on the rooster.  Which is 9 of the 15 spots available.  Now I know some will say what about Drew I think there is a spot for him if he wants it but the rash of bad and good QB play he might get the option of being a number 2 somewhere.  I think he would like to stay here in the D however a triple in salary has to be big temptation.

The deal with the salary cap above and this list is also the one little aspect of cap space.  Currently the 34 players are taking 102 million dollars.  Given the comment above about player minimals I would expect to see the 2 rookies get about 2 million combined.  That leaves only roughly 20 Million to sign the 15 players we need.  Now there is some space that can be moved around though.  With moving you need to first look at players who are at the end of their contract and also have high cap hits for the year.  First up is Calvin Johnson and his hit for next year is 15.6 million and is in his last year.  That would be good to do an extension and lessen that by 5 million or so but do a 30 percent increase (max the league allows) in 2014.   Kyle Vandenbosch is next up and with a 6.7 owed this year and 6.3 in 2013 could be reduced by a million or so and extended to say 2015.  Next up would be Corey Williams who is due 5 million and is in his last year.  Again a million reduction and extension to 2015 would be a solid answer.  After that we are looking at minor amounts.  Houston is at 4 million and a 500k reduction and extension for his last year would be good.  Hansen could be another bet at 3.2 and in his last year would be a good way to tie him up for another 2 more years.  Outside of that you really have to start to decide if you even want to keep some players or not.  We have a few players that have one or two years left with some Signing Bonuses but overall they are over the 2 million threshold I consider renegotiable for extensions to reduce salaries.  The thing is that we are at best looking at maybe 10 million pinched by extensions but closer to say 5 to 6 million.  That would give us around 25 million for those 15 players.  That is still pretty tough to accomplish but I think if they get the 10 million by extensions they could easily accomplish the 15 players with 30 million.

I doubt we resign corey williams

unless he takes a decent pay cut, SLH will take his spot

WTF?

You’re crazy if you think SLH can hold Corey William’s jock.

I have to agree

The simple thing is CW is doing a great job as run stopper and taking up any doubles that get him. I think in the long run we will need to replace him but that is in say 5 to 8 years. Not right now IMHO.

you want CWill till he’s 37-40?
I’m not sure that makes any sense, even if he’s a valuable piece of our DLine.

I don't think that is what they said.

I think they said that Corey Williams is still playing at a higher level than SLH and that he is under contract for next season. As long as that continues to be true then you keep him.

Joel

As some other have pointed out, Corey Williams is still under contract for another season. The Lions will keep him because he is still playing better than Sammie Hill. I think you are simply mistaken that Corey will be gone. Even if Sammie Hill passes Corey on the depth chart, he will stay through next season as the backup.

You are also missing other aspects to the value of Corey Williams. As long as he continues to play at a high level, he is a valuable part of the substitution rotation and helps keep the other guys fresh. That means his value to the Lions is not strictly what he does on the field, but also in the increased performance across the entire line that the Lions get from having rested players.

Out of the FA's, I epxct the Lions to do something like this...

QB’s – Drew Stanton will be gone. Somebody will offer him more than what the Lions will, and give him a better chance to start.

RB’s – Jerome Harrison and Maurice Morris will both be gone. The Lions will have Best, LeShoure, KWill, and another running back to be named later. I can see the Lions spending a mid or late round pick on a running back MoMo could return if he takes a pay cut to minimum.

WR’s – Rashied Davis and Maurice Stovall could both return, but only at league minimum salaries.

OL’s – Jeff Backus will return for a season or two, but at a big pay cut. I expect the Lions to get a couple million back to sign other guys here. Corey Hillard will return with nearly the same contract he had before, Dylan Gandy will probably be replaced by a draft pick.

DL’s – Cliff Avril needs to get paid. He will be one of the key off-season signings. Andre Fluellen is likely going to be odd man out next season.

LB’s – Stephen Tulloch needs to get paid, he is another key off-season signing. Bobby Carpenter deserves another season at a similar salary to what he is making now. Isaiah Ekejiuba is probably done with the Lions.

DB’s – Eric Wright needs tog et paid, and is another key off-season signing, Brandon McDonald has played well enough to return at a similar salary. Vincent Fuller may get a minimum contract to come to camp. Erik Coleman is likely done in Detroit.

LS – Don Mulbach will get another contract similar to the one he has now, unless the Lions get another center than can be a long snapper.

As for Restricted Free Agents for 2012 we have the following players

RB’s – Eldra Buckley and Stefan Logan will get tender offers.

DL’s – Sammie Lee Hill will get a tender offer.

LB’s – Ashley Palmer and DeAndre Levy will both get tender offers.

In other words, the playrs I see as possible casualties are: Drew Stanton, Jerome Harrison, Maurice Morris, Dylan Gandy, Andre Fluellen, Isaiah Ekejiuba, Vincent Fuller, and Erik Coleman. I do expect some of them to get contracts to come to camp at minimum salaries, or just to keep rights on them so they can be traded. Fluellen would be the most obvious example of the latter.

Some more work

After figuring out how to do the 2012 roster and seeing who we keep and cut I looked at 2013 and beyond. Right now its not pretty for how we have as FA’s come 2013. The good thing is those players could be persuaded to take league minimal for two years with the 2nd year be reopened at a higher salary. I say that because of the 2014 TV Contracts.

I went and figured out the cap for 2014 and boy is it big. Right now I have the following caps:
2011 – 120,375,000 + 3 million for carry over
2012 – 123,285,000 + 1.5 million for carry over
2013 – 127,025,000 – any carry over taken in 2011 or 2012 (didn’t look at the rules yet)
2014 – 173,450,000 – any carry over taken in 2011 or 2012

That is just a minor increase in 2014 I think. Which means I could see a few teams do some accounting and say if you want big money sure we will give it to you but you have to take it as a roster bonus in 2014 for a longer contract. It will be interesting if the NFL office is able to get the 70 percent increase in TV revenue given that the companies were allowed a lower amount to put in that clause.

Do we go OL or DE

in next years draft? I see a lot of talent at the tackle position in this coming draft not so much on the DE side. And we all know we will be picking 32nd in the draft so what do we pick?

by mochaj on Nov 3, 2011 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

Depends

Personally I think we need a CB, RB, WR off the top with a Interior G/C. After that the needs fall from what happens in FA. Personally Carp is our oldest LB so its not that big of a deal for drafting a LB at this point. Depending on what happens in FA if we fail to get 2 backup QBs then I see a need for drafting one. For OT it depends on Backus, if he reups then I can see us not going OT this year. With 5 OTs on the rooster not much need. The only reason we have 5 is we have Backus who is in his 30’s a rookie, a 2nd year, and a 1st contract OT along with a 2nd Contract OT. We just do have a lot of youth and it needs experience in the long run to get better. The critical item is the DL. We have several young DL that need to get resigned. It will take money, money that is tied up in CJ’s contract to get done.

I am pretty good with those positions getting picked too.

I would like to see the interior linemen get picked in rounds 2/3 though. I really would like to see the Lions go after some guys that will be starters pretty quickly and have some serious chops as run blockers. The offensive line needs some guys that are going to be difference makers.

I agree that we should draft a running back, but I would like to see that pick made in the four or fifth round, not as early as we have made it before. I don’t like spending high picks on running backs because they do not have long playing careers and you don’t get much payback for them. Since we should have Best, LeShoure, and KWill for next season, I feel the Lions can afford to take a flyer on a later round RB in the draft. I like somebody like Isaiah Pead from Cincinnatti. Pead has good speed and is not afraid to run between the tackles. He is also very good at picking up blitzes so he can help protect Stafford when he is in the lineup.

If we draft an early round CB that is probably the end of Alphonso Smith or Brandon McDonald in Detroit. Wright, Houston, and Berry are definitely ahead of Phonz, and Brandon McDonald has been all season as well. The problem that I have with drafting a CB is that most of the best ones that are eligible for the draft are juniors. Alfonzo Dennard of Nebraska is probably the top senior CB this draft. I would be fine with Dennard where the Lions will be picking. He is not big, but he has good cover skills in both man and zone, he has good ball skills, and he plays the run well. He was also tested because he played opposite Prince Amukamara.

I can see the Lions taking a first round WR that would push either Maurice Stovall or Rashied Davis off the roster. I would prefer they get a guy with some sixe and speed like Michael Floyd of Notre Dame or Dwight jones of North Carolina. I also really like Alshon Jeffery of South Carolina but I do not think he will lcome out for the draft. A decent later round flyer would be Tommy Streeter of Miami. He is 6’5" and 215 with excellent leaping ability. He also has the speed to stretch the field. If he worked with Megatron and learned the ropes he could be awesome.

I can also see the Lions drafting an all around tight end that can stretch the seam like Coby Fleener of Stanford. Fleener is a good blocker and has been a great weapon for Andrew Luck. We might even be able to get him as late at the third round.

If center Peter Konz (Wisc.) or Mike Brewster (OSU) are available in round 1 they shouldn't be passed on.

David DeCastro (Stanford) and Kelechi Osemele (Iowa St.) are worthwhile 2-3 round options as plug-and-play guards.

2012 has to be the year that the Lions recognize that some upgrades on the O-line are a priority.

agreed

but free agency is kind of spooky with all the 1yr deals we have on the team such as LBer. But id love to get a road grader of a center! there seems to be a lot of Oline talent in 2012 draft. If by some miracle we can get Zach Brown or Travis Lewis im all for it
