Kevin Smith, How you like me NOW?
Detroit is victorious against the Panthers even though their first half was atrocious. However, the defense made some great plays, Stafford got on track, and Kevin Smith, Kevin Smith, and more Kevin Smith!
He finished with over 200 yards total offense with 3 touchdowns. This is what a healthy Kevin Smith is capable of in this offensive scheme. He showed tremendous vision. He showed he is back to his 4.4 speed. He showed he was decisive with his cuts. He showed he has good hands. He showed he is a good pass blocker and he showed me he should be the work horse of this team going forward. Best should be a compliment to Smith with Morris backing them up.
I am happy to see we have a run game!!!!

Best is still the better player
Best could easily have put up a 150+ yard game against the horrible run D that the Panthers have. Not trying to discredit Smith, he had a fantastic game and should get a lot more carry’s.
If im the coaches I use both to there strengths.
Jahvid as a pass catching, roll to the side back.
KSmoove as a up the middle back.
Smith is playing the role of what LeShoure would have done.

Leshoure should be the work horse
BUT for now Kevin earned the right to start no question. Mo and Keiland have been to ineffective to long. If Smith continues playing like this well…Nice knowing ya Mo cause this Kevin, Leshoure and Best will be a hell of a stable going forward. Especially when we add some lineman up front.

age has nothing to do with it
He does not have the miles on his tires that most RBs have at his age. not even close.
He was effective running today, in case you didn’t notice.

Said it since before he was cut
Smith is a prototypical NFL back physically (as is LeShoure). He has great hands and blocks. Best is best served in a reserve role, as a WR/RB hybrid for two back sets.

I've said this 3 or 4 times here
Best is a scat back at best, I’m happy Smith is getting a 2nd chance in the NFL and he should be our LEAD BACK the rest of the year because Leshore is hurt.
Don't think there should be a work horse back on this team
but I tihnk K Smoove should split carries with Best on a pretty even basis while mixing in MoMo and Keiland in special situations…

Honestly
That’s really what I see once Best and Leshoure are healthy. This running back committee with best, Smith, and Leshoure would insure Best’s health and allow us to get the most out of each back.
At this point, you could say all 3 of them are injury prone, or at least have injury history
Reducing the work load helps all of them going forward.

i just am glad that smith had time to get healthy and work on his game...
im saving the final verdict on him until he stays healthy and also keeps the tempo up against a team that has a run D. I still think the major problem is our line

Congratulations Kevin Smtih
Your relentless efforts just paid dividends and made the outlook for the rest of this year and next a whole lot brighter. Obviously we take BPA in the draft which means if for some crazy reason Trent Richardson falls to us we gotta take him but if not who cares. Sure glad the front office didn’t forget about you and I’m glad you did what you did today in a Lions uniform instead of somebody else. Your performance today makes me a little ashamed we gave up on you for a time and I’m sure that sentiment is felt by many. Be proud of yourself and stay hungry because you deserve it. Great seeing you healthy and motivated. You were a bright spot in rough times here in Detroit and to see you succeed now is all the more sweet. Not that anything I or anyone else says should or would really matter to you but I’m proud of you. You got the heart of a champion.

Here is the most intriging thing to K Smith being back to forrm.
He at his best is a hybrid of Leshoure and Best. Great between the tackles like Leshoure and a threat out of the backfield to catch the ball and do some damage like Best. Those attributes along with being a decent blocker makes our offense more versatile. Based on his rookie season I don’t think this is a one hit wonder. No one expect 200+ all purpose yards on a regular basis but the your effort and no quit attitude is priceless. No one can stay in beast mode all of the time but you had that today.

Can't blame him
It’s a habit of Lions fans to be heavily vested in the upcoming draft by week 11. It will take a winning year or two before it stops.
Yes, I really am that great.
Come on, you have no idea where we will end up picking.
Those guys may not be available at # 32!!!
My 2011 Lions season prediction: 12 wins and 4 losses. I made this prediction the week after the New England preseason game. It's looking slightly optimistic right now.
Kudos young man!
If it was easy to come off the street, and not only compete at the highest level but excel, it would happen more often. So when Kevin Smith showed what he had to offer today to his franchise, in my opinion, it was the best story in the NFL today and one of the best of the year. The time off clearly gave him a much needed break to heal his body, while at the same time humbled him to the point of great personal growth. He was a very dependable offensive threat before his knee injury and the workhorse for the worst team in football. Whatever vision and quickness he seemed to lack coming in out of college he seems to have put himself into position to be a pro, by learning how to play the pro game. I never though he was a game breaker but you can’t deny his overall skill set isn’t solid. So happy for him and the team today. Guy had to be on top of the world by 4pm. Kevin Smith is not wasting his go round and I for one, am inspired by it.
GO LIONS…we saw you give the Pack all they could handle for 8 quarters last year without Staff. No matter the score we’re gonna physically pound the cheese. Can’t wait for the D and Ford Field to shut up the world!!!!!!!!!

Just play who's hot.
Why question it? We happen to have the luxury of having a stable of running backs who aren’t greedy “me first” types, who are all capable of pounding the rock or catching the ball and taking off. Just play whoever looks hot; mix it up through the game, and whoever’s on gets more touches.

+1 agree w/ this
Congrats to Smith on his performance and hope this continues. I have to go w/ what some of the sentiments are in this thread which is if there was a story yesterday in the NFL one of the best stories should be Kevin Smith story about his return to the NFL Form and lead a team that basically wrote him off in a comeback win from behind. I believe thats part of the Hunger inside him and lets hope that fuels him for the rest of the year ..

Hate to be that guy
…but Mr. Smooth had one good game against one bad team. He looked great, yes, and I hope that the Ghost of Rookies past has reanimated his corpse, but let’s not go crazy here until we have a slightly bigger sample size

I don't think anyone is expecting him to have games like that every week.
however, it wasn’t just the numbers that I was looking at. it was how he played. he was running well, hitting the holes, getting behind his blockers, etc. playing smart football.
exactly, he passed the eye test.

Regretfully agree, SM
I think we all need to temper our expectations a bit here. He looked great, but Carolina doesn’t exactly have the best defense in the league.
Don’t forget this guy was on his couch 3 weeks ago. And it wasn’t just the Lions who passed on him. There were 31 other teams as well. Now, I know there was an injury and that had a lot to do with it, but I think we may be forgetting all the “Cut Kevin Smith” discussions that went on around here and those discussions were assuming he would be healthy (at least at some point).
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a KS fan. I’ve always liked his attitude. Just don’t be surprised if Kevin Smith isn’t the solution to our run game woes (which I admit has been a lot better the past few weeks.) I think we all know an effective run game starts with the line, which is still the same as it was 3 weeks ago. I still think we will need to win games with our defense.
All that said, give KS the ball!! He’s hungry!

He's not going to rack up 140 yards every week
He had something like 1200 yards in his rookie season, if he can make that pace for the rest of the year he’ll be a good contributor. Plus, keep in mind that whether or not he can keep playing at that level, Green Bay has to account for him now. Any attention or time they spend on him can’t be spent on Megatron, Burleson, Young, Sheffler, or ’Grew.
Yes, I really am that great.
976 on the ground as a rookie
Still, not bad considering that was 0-16 2008 where we were playing from behind (ie. passing) most of the time.
Yes, I really am that great.
I take exception at calling the activity Lions QBs took part in during the 2008 season
“Passing.”

Lol. Perhaps atvman meant it like in cards
like when you choose not to take a turn and let the next guy go instead.
i.e. “passing” as in
“I pass. You can go.”

Small sample size?
This is his fourth year. The guy has shown he can play when healthy. Even though Carolina’s run D isn’t very good, he still did things that AP, MJD, and Michael Turner couldn’t do on that run D.
That’s like when people said in Staffords rookie year that his 400 yd, 5 TD performance didn’t matter because it was against the Browns. He still accomplished things that many great players haven’t.
What would Earl Boykins do?
"forth year"
That’s like saying Sarah Palin served as Governor of Alaska for a full term. The man was hurt more often than he wasn’t. In 2010 he had 4 more carries than Michael Bush has averaged over the last two games (30) and averaged a whopping 3.9 ypc. In 2009 he had 217 carries in 13 games which is a decent load…but…he averaged 3.4 ypc. Yikes.
All this to say, I am sticking by my claim that we need a bigger sample, and it’s not like he has torn it up when he has gotten touches. He looked great on Sunday, and I hope he can stay healthy and keep it up, but I’m not ready to give him the Keys of Detroit yet.
by Suhper Megatron on Nov 22, 2011 2:02 PM EST up reply actions
If you remember in 2009
he was playing with a separated shoulder. I think he played admirably considering he could only really carry the ball with one arm, and couldn’t stiff arm (one of a runningbacks deadliest weapons). I’m just saying if you actually look at what he did and under the circumstances, he can play. Like every player (i.e. Best, LeShoure, Stafford), there are health concerns. But, I think we’ve seen enough to say he can play, just my opinion.
Obviously, you think otherwise, but I still feel, in his first 2 (I’ll give you his third year, he was out for most of the year) years and the one game this year, he has shown he can play. He can take the keys and do whatever he wants with them, but if he loses them, there will be reprecussions.
What would Earl Boykins do?
I agree
especially about the losing the keys part. He was a stud pre-injury and was certainly a stud on Sunday…let’s just pray he can fight the injury bug

smith had a great game and lions offensive line played great as for the packers game he should be the strarting runing back he gives them the most to game plan for as defensive to game plan for and if best can get back for this game give the lions a one to punch at the runing back spot will have to sea if he can play in this game .

Talent has never been an issue with Smith
It’s always been his health. Right now, he’s 100% healthy and he’s well rested, which means he is at an advantage over other players. He looked good yesterday. His cuts were sharp and he looked like he was fast. If he finishes the year strongly, I expect the Lions to re-sign him for next year. A backfield with Leshoure as the horse, Best as the change of pace playmaker, and Smith as a depth player sounds pretty darn good to me.
Yes, I really am that great.
200 yds 3 TDs should earn you something, especially when it looked like a loss at times.
Dude was a hero out there. You do not ignore 200 yds / 18 pts.
I don’t know if he can achieve anything except a fraction of those numbers every Sunday, but best believe we’ll find out. Schwartz and Stafford will put him in a position to succeed, it’s up to Smith to make the most of it.

I am interested to hear your reasoning for voting for him, (unless it was a joke, but no offense if it wasn’t.)
Did you guys see the size of that chicken?
KSmooth has ran behind that line for a while and knows their tendencies.
I like the dude and his talents he has good/great hands and doesn’t pussy foot around behind the line alot. But.. it was Carolina. Yes KS had an epic game but we need to give Staffords turn around some props also. i it wasnt for him getting his groove back that running game doesn’t open up. So props to both KS and Staff!!!
I have always like Kevin Smith
I thought it was very unfortunate how he was cut and injuries. I think he showed his huge upside and potential and he even looked better than he did before. With Leshoure, Best, and Smith, I think this running back group can be freak nasty.
Sanchez who?
Merry Christmas ...
Great early Christmas gift for the Lions … a semblance of what could be a much needed running game. Sometime guys like Kevin Smith need a second chance after a rocky start … and let’s not forget he was drafted highly touted. This second chance might cause all the potential that everyone expected to come to the forefront and it couldn’t come at a better time with the Packers on tap. The addition of some run plays could end up in longer, time eating drives and keep the Packers on the sidelines. In a straight up aerial shoot-out with the Packers I really don’t think the Lions would come out on top.
Best
is done…. Period!
Time to move on from him.
K smith has had 1 good game this year. I hope he keeps it up
No, running game, no SB.

I have to do it
Bringing him back, presumably healthy and in shape, now, with a great passing team around him, sounds like a very solid move to me. He is a good receiver out of the backfield, and he doesn’t have to hit any homeruns. All he has to do is carry the rock for 3-5 yards at a time, catch the ball when it is thrown at him, and do a little blocking now and then. He’s young, and has potential still. Maurice Morris will not last forever. Eldra Buckley was never meant to see the field as a RB. Keiland Williams has been a solid 3rd down back. Kevin Smith can be a workhorse. When the Lion’s drafted him, he was expected to be that workhorse. Now he doesn’t have to be, because there is a plethura of talent around him to take away all of that pressure. He could very well flourish once again, like he did as a rookie. If he even sees moderate success, it will open all kinds of doors in the passing game.
http://www.prideofdetroit.com/2011/11/7/2544726/detroit-lions-to-sign-kevin-smith-bout-time#82290352
Kevin Smith is back, and I think he’s going to light it up. I disagree with all of the naysayers on him too. He is a solid receiving threat out of the backfield, and if he is 100% healthy and looking as good as they say, I can see him rushing for 5-600 yards over the last 8 games. He’s versatile, and he can run between the tackles as well. With a run blocker like Leonard Davis on the right side, K-Smooth might be the comeback player of the year.
http://www.prideofdetroit.com/2011/11/10/2551946/lions-news-jason-hanson-ryan-donahue#82536969
These were comments that I made about Kevin Smith, shortly after we resigned him. I just knew he could do it. Maybe Peterman has a fire lit under his ass now that Leonard Davis is here, and maybe it will be Peterman, and not Davis, that remains as the starter at RG, but as long as the O-line is getting the job done I still believe Kevin Smith could EASILY run for 5-600 yards before the end of the season, and maybe he can do even more than that! Green Bay doesn’t have a great run defense by any means, and we still have to play them twice. New Orleans isn’t even as good as Green Bay vs the run. The Raiders and Chargers are worse than both Green Bay and New Orleans against the run. The best run defense the Lions will face in their remaining games is Minnesota’s, and even they allow an average of 100.7 ypg to opposing RBs, and a 3.7 ypc average against.
Kevin Smith is healthy. He was a stud in college and a major workhorse. He is well rested and ready to contribute, and I feel it couldn’t have come at a better time for both him AND the Lions. I can see him putting up close to 100 yards per game for the rest of this season, if they start him and give him the ball 15-20 times per game. If that happens he will surpass 750 yards in just 8 games, with just 6 games started. I think it is a very good possibility that he hits 550 at a minimum, barring injury. I am very happy that the Lions brought him back, and I think everyone else should be too.
