Former Lion Dre' Bly Retires From Football

Cornerback Dre' Bly, who has been out of football since the Lions released him in September 2010, is retiring. From Jason La Canfora:

Bly played in the NFL for 12 seasons. His first four were spent in St. Louis before he came to Detroit for four years. He started in 54 games for the Lions and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2003 and 2004. The Lions traded him to the Broncos in 2007, and he played in Denver for two years before spending 2009 with the 49ers.

The Lions signed Bly again in July 2010, but he was released during the final round of roster cuts.

Too old/beat up.

It happens. Thanks for toughing it out through the Millen years, ’Dre.

Thanks Dre, you did some outstanding work here in Detroit.

My 2011 Lions season prediction: 12 wins and 4 losses. I made this prediction the week after the New England preseason game. It's looking slightly optimistic right now.

Best wishes Dre...

Too bad you can’t be apart of this team.

I'm glad we traded him

I was pissed at the time because he was our best defender, but I’d rather have Scheffler.

I think you have that wrong...

We traded Ernie Sims for Scheffler, not Bly

Yup

Bly was traded for Tatum Bell and George Foster

That was probably the worst trade the Lions have made in the last 20 years

Can anyone think of a worse one?

Whoops.

My mistake. I was also pissed about the Sims trade for the same reason. That’s why I mixed them up.

by ziggyz on Nov 21, 2011 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

Also, trade was to same team.

Bly trade was not good in retrospect.

Dre was good

No Primetime by any means but the guy was a ball hawk. Best of luck to him

I would rather we had kept Leigh Bodden.

He was younger and arguably better.

No slogans. Just win!!!

I have a soft spot in my heart for this guy

Not entirely sure why but I do. It is a damn shame we could not have him in his prime on this team we have now.

Such is life. Best wishes to you in your post football career.
