Lions Notes: Matthew Stafford, Lions Broke Some Records On Sunday
- Matthew Stafford has now thrown for four or more touchdowns in a game four times in his career. That breaks Bobby Layne's Lions record of three games with four or more touchdowns.
- Stafford got off to a slow start on Sunday and went 3-of-8 for 35 yards and two interceptions early on. After that? As John Niyo notes, Stafford proceeded to finish the game with these numbers: 25-of-28, 300 yards and five touchdowns.
- Stafford is the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era of the NFL to have two games with five touchdown passes in his first 23 career starts, according to Jon Zimmer.
- The Lions are the first NFL team to ever rally from 17 or more points down to win three separate times in one season.
- According to Dave Hogg, this is the third time in Lions history that they have scored 45 or more points three times in one season.
- As noted by a reader (thanks for the heads up, Mitch), Jason Hanson is only three points away from passing Jason Elam and moving up to sixth on the NFL career points list.
- Calvin Johnson was wired for sound on Sunday, and he will be featured on Sound FX on NFL Network on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. (ET).
- Former Lion Roger Brown is a big fan of Ndamukong Suh.
- Panthers quarterback Cam Newton set the rookie rushing touchdown record for quarterbacks on Sunday.
- Some special teams stats for Week 11 from Football Outsiders reveal that John Wendling did a good job of preventing a long return from turning into a touchdown on Sunday.
- Jay Cutler is going to have surgery on his broken thumb. He is expected to miss the rest of the regular season, although the Bears are hoping he can return before then.
- The Bears are apparently interested in Josh McCown and J.T. O'Sullivan as possible extra depth at quarterback. Oh, Mike Martz.
- Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has a high ankle sprain. It's not clear how long he will be out, but if this injury turns into something that lasts a few weeks, it's possible he could miss the Dec. 11 game against the Lions.

Hate injuries but....
I hope Peterson is out at least a few weeks.

Don't wish them on anyone

Nonsense. It's more meaningful to beat Peterson than to win without him out there.

Pretty sure it won't show up in the standings whether AP was playing or not.
The more beaten up our opponents are, the better. I’ve watched this Lions team struggle for too long to discredit wins just because of something out of the Lions control.
Fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings.
yep yep
you can’t control who the other team puts out there. you put your best (available) against their best (available)
So should we arrange with the NFL to play our second game @MIN, too?
I mean, it’s less meaningful to beat them with the crowd advantage right?
Wins are wins.

agree 100%
I hate these “oh I wish they had so and so playing or winning this won’t count if we don’t beat ______” you play the team that is lined up against you and that’s it.
Let's get some practice in...
arrange to play the Vikings at Lambeau, just to remember what it feels like to win there, to prepare the Lions for the last game.

I would say that about the Packers or the Bears, but not a 2-8 Vikings team.

Ugly stat.

Fuck Jim Harbaugh.
Unsatisfying stat, but hardly ugly.
Nine rushing TDs for a rookie in 10 games is impressive.
That it came in 8 losses kind of undermines the achievement.
No slogans. Just win!!!
When you have a rookie QB with those kinds of TD totals and yards
and you are still only winning 2 games you really have to look at those people they roll out there when it is their turn to play defense.
Kind of strange how effective the Panthers are on offense when Rivera used to be a DC.
Then you look at their defensive numbers and your mind just gets flat-out blonw.

Their defense didn't have many piecees
Their offense was a quarterback away and they got their quarterback

All these records don't mean much if the Lions don't beat the Packers at least once.

Yep
The Packers games are kind of like our wildcard playoff game. Without winning one, we probably wont make the postseason.
how the hell do you make a buzzer noise in a blog? eegggghhhhh?
even if we lose both to the packers we could still go 11-6.easily into the post season.not that i dont think we cant beat the pack.check my next post.i shall explain

Yeah, if we sweep Min @Oak SD
Lose to the Packers this week, and now Chicago has the 5 seed, and ATL is one game behind with the tiebreaker. Win, and the Lions control their own destiny.
Err
I meant, if the Lions win thursday they’ve pretty much won themselves a playoff spot.
Winning this game will be big, but we still have to beat some other teams.
I think 11 and 5 should do it, so that means four more wins. Ten and six is going to look really tight as we may not have any tie break advantages.
Atlanta beat us, and Chicago looks like they will have a better, or as good, conference record than us. Dallas is the one team that we have an advantage over.
My 2011 Lions season prediction: 12 wins and 4 losses. I made this prediction the week after the New England preseason game. It's looking slightly optimistic right now.
IF we win this one we're 3-1 in the division.
And beating min at home looks likely, which puts us 4-2 in the division. Chicago meanwhile already has two losses in the division, and beating the Packers without Cutler seems unlikely, ergo they’ll be 3-3 in the division and will have worse breakers than us, regardless of how much better their in-conference record is.
10-6 looks very do-able for a wild card berth.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
You are right Mav.
I thought that the tiebreaker was determined by the conference record, but as per NFL.com [ http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures ] it is division performance if both teams are from the same division.
It will start to get confusing if Atlanta and/or the Giants and Cowboys get involved in this too.

okay i dont know why this hasnt been brought up before now and i may get ripped for this but here goes:
who have the packers beaten? now wait a minute i’m not saying their lucky or that thier not good they obviously are but lets look at their schedule.
1.against the saints.some rediculous stat was mentioned beginning of the season about how the winner of the super bowl never loses their season opener the following season.saints are a good football team though so 1 one good team so far.
2. panthers.team gearing up for the future.not a good team yet.
3.chicago a good team relying on their running back so far.we’ll say two good teams.
4.denver.nuff said
5.atlanta struggled early in the season and gave gb a run for their money until late in the game.call it three
6.st. louis.nevermind
7.minnesota basement dwellers welcome to your new home!
8.san diego this is thier choke year and they challenged the packers for all 60 minutes.still at three.
9.minnesota……refer to #7
10.tampa bay this team is bipolar and at 4-6 with a three game losing streak we’re still at three.
11.lions suddenly have a running game and stafford is raking up the yardage and td’s
12.giants should be a challenge
13.oakland is overrated to me
14.kansas yeah right
15.chicago no cutler equals one demensional
16.lions face the packs backups as starters rest for the post season
so the pack really only have three challenging games under their belt and three remaining two with detroit and with cutler gone the other one goes to the giants.with the 31st ranked defense thursday should be a shootout in the lions favor.time to bring the pack down.GO LIONS!!!! i’m no analyst just a fan spitting his kool-aid flavored two cents.

i think the G men are overrated as well..
ATL and CHI was having an identity crises when they played too.
Packers are good… offence is real good. D is pretty avg at best…closer to below though
The Disassembly Line....nuff said.
Actually, their defense sucks!

Yardage wise, yes. Points wise...
…not so much. They’re very opportunistic. As long as Stafford avoids the INTs, we should have a chance, and frankly the game could look like the one against Carolina; lots of offense, minimal defense, but lots of turnovers.
Their D is made to slow you down
and wait for mistakes. That kind of D works when your offense can score 30 points a game.
If we get down early—as is our MO—we will be in trouble.
Yeah but I'd our running game keeps it up
Then we don’t have to rely on staff early. Means he can warm up. However against Carolina and Chicago he wasn’t bad at all save for his first pick against Carolina. He was moving the ball against Chicago effectively til wr’s fumbled and put us in a hole. Second pick the other day was tipped. Think staff is in good shape for this game.

Slow starts have been an issue all season true however
The last two games haven’t been slow starts theyve been turnover problems which has t been a problem at all this season until staff broke his finger and people got butterfingers. With smith looking pretty good we can use him to allow everyone to get into their groove.like Schwartz said: he kept out of third and longs which have killed alot of our early drives.smith can be the remedy for our slow starts.

What I want to see most from the offense is picking up 1st downs on 3rd down.
They were finally over 50% last game, and I think you can chalk that up to Kevin Smith and the confidence he’s bringing to the OL. It’s becoming fun for them to hit, and know they can spring a Lion RB now. There will be no paddy-cake from the OL in this one; they will be in bitch-slappin’ mode, and control the clock.
You also have to remember that GB hasn’t faced a secondary nearly as tough as Detroit’s all season.

A fricking men!!
We need to give them the ball first!!! I am also tired of us not doing anything with it when we get it first.
we get the ball first and go 3 and out or turn it over… worst case is the other team scores
we kick off to them…. worst case is they score.
so really it’s the same result as our opening drives have been pretty bad.
Here are our opening drives this year… I can’t find if we won the toss or not though.
WK1 – Received – FG
WK2 – Received – TD
WK3 – Vikings got the opening kickoff – Our first drive a 3 and out (-1yd)
WK4 – Received – INT
WK5 – Received – 6 Plays, 20yds – Punt
WK6 – Received – 3 and out (-1yd) – Punt
WK7 – Received – 3 and out (5yds) – Punt
WK9 – Denver received and went for a FG – Our first drive was 80yd for a TD
WK10 – Received – 5 Plays, 27yds – Fumble
WK11 – Received – 3 Plays, 0yds – INT
so in 10 games we’ve received the opening kickoff 8 times and haven’t scored on that possession since week 2. we haven’t even had a productive drive for the most part. so I think the strategy here needs to change since it’s obvious our offense isn’t setting the tone in games.
to further the point, our offense has been better in the second half almost all year so I just think it’d make more sense to get the ball then.
let the defense set the tone early.
before anyone says it
I know this goes a bit against conventional wisdom, but at this point the stats show it should at least be attempted. the conventional plan isn’t working.
I think you're on to something...
I’m having joyous visions of Lions’ kickoff, followed by a fumble. I like it!
But do we take the wind for the 1st half?

It's not about yardage
Gbs def has playmakers at crucial moments. A db that will pick 6 in the fourth or a lb that will get a sack to cause 3/4 and long etc. Similar to the lions d. Gives up a lot of medium range plays but does a lot of the bend not break

The Key is Kevin Smith and Linehan.
Run the ball… Packer’s run D is a weakness.

Pump fakes too
Their CBs love taking gambles. Double moves off a pump fake can really work.

The only broken record is
Bench Stafford, Stanton is better.
LMFAO
MSU Drew won’t be a Lion next year
"I like to win all the time, so all the time I play with myself."
Stanton's a solid #3.
He was a valuable part of that little end of the season streak we enjoyed. He’s toughed it out through some real bullshit management here in Detroit. I’m glad to have him and he deserves to be a Lion.

I think key to victory
is pressure on Rogers…duh. But I’ve seen lots of GB games this year and it seems like teams rather play zone behind a four man rush. This give Rogers and those receivers way too much time. I think we should be real aggressive and send the house. We can take our chances Wright and Houston can stick to Jennings and Nelson.
What about Finley?
He’s a mismatch. A LBs might lose a step in coverage and our DBs would have to make tough open field tackles
