Just for reference..

the clip of his stomp should be shown whenever he talks about it:

He’s in lala land if he thinks anyone could believe he was being held in place or didn’t mean to stomp down forcefully.

Judging by that video

If Suh wasn’t the initiator, gravity must’ve been. Dietrich-Smith was tangled up as much as anyone else there.

I don't think anyone is questioning whether he was the sole instigator

But there is absolutely no excuse for his reaction. Just none. He’s a professional.

Yeah....

the stomp was definitely in frustration. It looks to me like it could have been either way but I’m leaning to him stomping on the guy. Nasty play, uncalled for and hey whatever. It’s over, lets see what the NFL does and hope he doesn’t get removed from a few games. He should probably get a 2 game suspension though. Sucks to be without him for those games. In Minnesota whatever. New Orleans he’s going to be missed.

My name is Suh! How do you do?! Now You GONNA DIE!

Whatever suspension he gets he deserves.

I agree 100%

This team has too much talent to play and lose the way we have been. Those kind of penalties are inexcusable. Now we are most likely going to have to play multiple games without our best Defensive Tackle.

Couldn't agree more.

I like JS and all but I think you’re spot on.

The thing that bothers me more than anything though is how he punished Gos for a stupid penalty, but he seems incapable of doing that with anyone else.

But that’s what makes me mad. It was like a fake show of discipline what he did to Gos. He basically said I’m willing to bench an average player for his stupid penalties, but I’m not willing to do it with my better players. It just sends a really bad message I think.

I want to be a fan of Suh

I really, really do. But he’s dreaming if he thinks he’s fooling anyone anymore. Not even me.

Your character comes through in your actions. He said he wouldn’t hold out, then he did. He has continually defended himself, saying he isn’t dirty….but continually, at the very least, his temper or antics have been a detriment to the team (this year more than last).

It’s more than just Suh too. The team needs to grow up and focus on what’s IMPORTANT. These overreactions and ridiculous penalties are showing the world that we don’t belong in the playoffs yet. I hate saying that.

Today has not been great. The Lions game…..Nickelback….and now Enrique Iglesias is on.

Sounds like he's just brushing it off, trying to minimize what happened.

I think after the reckoning with Schwartz, his tone will change. He just got humiliated and ejected from a big game with a giant audience. His pride is where these comments are stemming from.

I wouldn’t be embarrassed to say this team isn’t worthy of greatness- you gotta make a game of it, and they didn’t. Suh conducted himself poorly. Schwartz let those dudes play with showing any real discipline. They deserved the loss. I feel sorry for the people who paid money to sit through it in Detroit.

So our number one problem this season?

Turnovers? No.
Running game? Nope
Special teams? Negative
Defensive discipline and self control? Ding ding ding!

Our defense cost is this game today. Turnovers and injuries didn’t help but count the penaltys and drives kept alive in this game and the entire season. Just rediculous. Without Suhs penalty it’s a field goal for Detroit and a two possession game.

by FMFDOC8404 on Nov 24, 2011 9:09 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Right? The defense slowed down the best offense in the NFL even more than I thought they would

Our offense just kept shooting themselves in the foot. Seriously, 0 points until the 4th quarter against an average-at-best defense? Our running game looked pretty damn solid so we can no longer use that as an excuse.

It's just so damn frustrating having a streaky quarterback

I find myself constantly hoping during games that Staff will flip the switch in his brain and go into full murder/rape/pillage mode like he did against the Panthers. I think it’s Latif that points out that Stafford never struggles with another team’s defense. You never see him looking like a confused lost puppy like Tom Brady was against us in the preseason. He is the only thing that’s beating himself so it makes some of these losses twice as painful.

Defensive discipline was the #1 problem THIS game.

The defense has been the strength over the course of the season.

If the 2nd half had gone like the first and we’d lost 14-0 I would say you’re wrong.

The offense cost us the first half. Suh getting thrown out was where the wheels came off. Bottom line, the Defense was the bigger problem this game (though the offense did its part to earn this loss).

I think he cost the team too. The loss isn't entirely on Suh, but you can't do that.

The rules are different for him- they were before and sure as hell are now.

Nobody on the team deserved the W today, really. Stafford threw like shit. He didn’t lead. Burleson dropped balls. Hanson missed an easy kick. Schwartz, Cunningham, and Linehan couldn’t adjust on the fly.

Pinning it on Suh is weak.. I’m loyal to him, but a guy got tossed 30 minutes before he did- that was a clear warning. You need to be rational. He acted really irrational today.

What’s wrong with what Suh did has nothing to do with a win or a loss, it has to do with his character and the character is portrays on the team.

couple point to be made here

1) he did not just cost his team today, he more than likely cost his team for the next 4 or 5 games. he will be suspended. If it is only 2 games, I will be stunned.

2) A lot of people lost respect for Suh when he held out. Then more people did the same when he tried to bottle cap that one QB. And more when he tried to do it AGAIN. Now we have today. Blatantly dirty and disrespectful to his entire team and fans.

If this was an isolated incident, things would be different. It is not and so things are not.

The draft holdout has zero to to do with today. He gets fined every couple games for playing dirty/physical depending on how you look at it. Holding out for money means alot less now that he’s leading the league in fines. The draft holdout is old news, and you just come off as trying to pile on the guy when you dredge up stuff like that, man.

And ripping QB helmets up like weeds? How the hell’s that disrespectful to me as a fan? If anything, It’s disrespectful to the other team’s QB, but tough shit. This is the NFL in 2011.

I can’t believe the lies coming out of this man’s mouth. He was not being “held down”. I watched it again...

And now I DO see where he was being held. Dietrich-Smith had basically tried to hip toss Suh, and his right arm WAS wrapped over top of Suh’s left shoulder. However, the fact still remains that Suh over reacted. There was no call for slamming Dietrich-Smith’s head into the turf, or for the intentional stop he delivered after the fact.

His entire speech was a lie, outside of the fact that he was being held down. I stand corrected on that point.

Why would Smith WANT Suh to lay on top of him?

That is the flaw in your theory.

I know if I had a 300+ pound guy on me (and slamming my head into the ground) I would want him to get the hell off.

by Chief Oshkosh on Nov 24, 2011 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

Probably to try and goad him into a penalty. And it worked.

It’s not a theory, it happened. My DVR had the best angle, but here’s an OK one. Watch Smith’s arm. http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2011/11/24/2585062/ndamukong-suh-ejected-video-packers-lions/in/2349224

I’m not defending Suh’s behavior at all. He deserved to be ejected. Just saying he was provoked.

by ziggyz on Nov 24, 2011 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not trying to start something here...

But lets break this down…

What I see in that clip is EDS finishing his block and “pancaking” Suh. As the players get tangled up on the ground, EDS’ right arm gets caught around Suh. What you see as “holding onto Suh”, prior to the head slamming, is simply EDS not able to bring his arm to it’s “normal position”. It does not seem EDS has a strong grip on Suh at that point.

Maybe Smith really was holding onto Suh. But I still don’t see why him doing that prompted the stomp.

In fact after watching it again… 2 of the 3 head “slams” (for lack of a better word) came after EDS “let go”.

I say he gets a 2 game suspension and 100 mil fine.

When analyzing this, we really should have a bears fan or someone neutral give their take. Obviously we both have different sets of biased eyes :)

A Bears fan...really?

Just when I was starting to think you were reasonable. ;) How about a non-division rival with no skin in the game. Colts maybe?

Anyway, like I said, it’s not the best angle. I watched it several times on the DVR and Suh didn’t stand up until Smith finally let go. Then came the kick, which is indefensible btw.

Anyway, good game. Wish it hadn’t been so costly for us, but them’s the breaks. We’ll see you week 17.

One more point.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I just noticed if you look at the .gif at the start of these comments you can clearly see that Smith grabs Suh’s knee right as he finally stands up.

It shows he’s still trying to hinder and provoke him even at that point. Suh then turns and kicks that same arm that Smith grabbed his knee with. Again, it doesn’t justify what Suh did by any means but he’s clearly reacting to what Smith did rather than just kicking him cause he got beat on the play.

by ziggyz on Nov 24, 2011 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

I know what you are talking about

But IMO that was nothing. Sure he may have brushed his knee while Suh was getting up (don’t see the grab you speak of), but I think that motion was more of a “dude you were just slamming my head into the ground, get off” motion.

It shows he’s still trying to hinder and provoke him even at that point

This is where we differ. You see EDS as someone who is purposely trying to get a reaction out of Suh, I see EDS as a guy caught in the middle of a scuffle.

And Suh managed to reverse it and get on top of him. Dietrich kept holding on to Suh even though Suh was on top and pushing his head. If Suh hadn’t fought back it probably would have resulted in a penalty on GB.

Do you really not know what a hold is?

I feel like freaking peewee herman right now. A pancake does not include holding the d lineman by the pads after he’s on the ground and the play is over.

Dude...it was more of a failed hip toss than a pancake

A pancake, by definition, is pushing a defender onto their BACK during a RUN block.

Do you really think playing the “innocent” card is going to change Goodell’s decision on the coming suspension in any way?

In my opinion, he would have helped himself, in respect to Goodell, most by saying “I let the emotion of the situation get the better of me and I am sorry to the NFL, my fans and my team.”

They’re capable of coalescing around this and winning again. A single-game implosion is what I think we saw.

..and I don’t give a damn what you or the rest of the country thinks about the Detroit Lions.

Bighaircut do you have a response to this?

Do you consider Andre Johnson a dirty player? What about Smith? Do I need to find more examples? My point is A LOT of players have lapses like this and that does not make them dirty. People are just so eager to paint Suh with the dirty label which I feel is undeserved. You can say he has anger issues but you can’t call him dirty IMO.

So what makes Suh dirty?

All I see is a big, mean looking guy who plays with a nasty attitude and doesn’t let people fuck with him. He doesn’t dive at peoples knees and he doesn’t try to break rules. He doesn’t hit after the whistle any more than Vanden Bosch or Avril do.

I really hate defending him after he made such a stupid decision today but it’s BS to call him dirty.

by Kalzilla on Nov 24, 2011 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

I've explained many times

But I’ll put it all together here. Suh has been borderline dirty for awhile in my eyes. I’ve defended him more than anyone lately before this incident. But I can’t anymore.

“Dirty” in my mind, disagree if you want, is a player that steps over the line(example: very late hits, throwing punches, hitting defenseless players etc…) more than once. Suh has a few borderline “dirty plays” and then a few that are just filthy, such as Delhomme and the one today. There is no place for that anywhere. I feel like Suh tries to be this model of fear on the field, which I like, but when he isn’t performing as well as he knows he can, he does some things to take his anger out. Suh was being stifled today by GB’s O-line, and Suh got a chance to take his anger out by performing a dirty play, and that’s what he did. It’s what he’s done before.

And that's where I disagree

If I took the time I could find just as many examples of KVB, Corey, Avril, or any other d lineman (not just Detroit’s) doing things exactly like Suh does. These things are just brought to the spotlight because of his fame/skill. Nobody is up in arms about Willie Young or Nick Fairley’s late hits this season (who have both had a comparable number of questionable plays to Suh despite less play time). The dirty player label is just sensationalizing things that happen when you’re playing a fast paced contact sport.

by Kalzilla on Nov 24, 2011 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, I see your point

But none of those players have done what Suh just did, nor have they had the spotlight shone on them like Suh, especially on national tv on Thanksgiving. That last part may not be fair to Suh, but that’s how it is.

As of now, and I realize this won't be popular.....

The way “tude” and some sort of “entitlement” has krept into the Lions persona after winning nothing, I don’t really see how they’ll ever become a professional classy organization.

At the slightest bit of success, they’ll be shooting themselves in the foot with undisplined play.

but not everyone is that superficial. To some extent this will stick to Suh long after he’s retired even just as it has for Haynesworth. Granted FatAl has found plenty of other ways to discredit himself and I don’t see Suh ever dropping that low

the team, the player, and even the fans, have to own this. This was a career, nay life, altering day for young Suh. He’ll never be viewed the same way again. The fans of this sport, no not just of this team, have to speak up and say this is not the way this sport is to be played. Moving on from it so quickly just dismisses it

Here is what I don't get

Last year they got beat early and needed an edge to show they were not going to be anyones punching bag. They got nasty to show the league they were not going down without a fight.Nice rally point, it woked to an extent and they started winning.

This year they come in with all these expectations and start showing the league they aren’t going to get pushed around by winning games. They have the talent to win with a physical style of play, but there is no need for the 70’s style of borderline dirty play. So why are they still using this as a rally point? The Defense, especially the D-line is one of the best in the league. Why the need for all the hands to the face, late hits and penalties that give the offense more downs to put up points.

These are very talented professionals that can beat their man, get to the QB/RB take them down and do it repeatedly. When the play is over pick the guy up off the turf, pat him on the ass, show some respect and let him know you will be right back to put him down again. You aren’t going to intimidate another professional by a cheap shot, the only thing you will do is get caught sooner or later and cost your team a score.

In short this team is talented enough now not to need all this bull shit. This is hurting them and the coach needs to recognize a change is needed.

Can we all just calm down for a second?

Can we just sit back and think about this? Just for a minute. All this fighting doesn’t look good for us. Whether or not we want to defend Suh or not I think at the end of the day we can all sit back and say we need to player better, more disciplined football, and that starts with a team leader like Suh.

We’re 7-4 and still in some control of a wild card spot. We’re still in this thing and a fractured fan base won’t help anything

I think that's a fair way to put it.

People on both sides of the debate are going to far.

What Suh did today was totally uncalled for. However, we can’t call for his head just yet.

I just think that by being so divided on this controversy we’re feeding into the whole media hype about us being dirty. We just need to view it like it is: A dumb play, no matter how you feel about Suh as a player, he made a mistake. We need to move on from this, and find a way to learn from it.

Hey why does Staff get a pass?

Stafford has cost us some wins, played scared, made real dumb decisions but it gets passed off as being young. If he was consistantly going deep when Megatron was covered that’s one thing, but he fing dinks and dunks like he can’t trust himself, he completely missed CJ wide open today. Oh, give him time he’s only 23, this is his first full season, slurp slurp gag gargle. If you want Suh’s head on a pike, it’ll be because he’s fing trying. Remember the time Barry spiked the ball? How you felt for his frustration in dealing with the pussies around him? This is a team problem, how to be winners with passion. How to play to win instead of not lose.
Oh, hey Nate, the ball is your friend.

With or without it, I’m sure he regrets what he did now that the game is cold and over.

He doesn’t need a bunch of dudes on the internet to make him feel shitty about it.

He needs to find that balance of physicality and defensive dominance without crossing the line and above all, costing the team out there.

Best believe he’ll be reflecting for awhile about what happened today.

Ive read this blog for a long time and this is my first time posting

Did Suh overreact yes, should he be suspended probably but i want to point something out watching the replay. The “stomp” isnt as bad as it looks. If you were to get stomp by Suh on your arm i dont care who you are you would be in freaking pain. And the guy who got stomped is clearly not…so just pointing that out either Suh is lousy at trying to curb stomp peoples arms or people are overreacting to it. Thats just my observation. GO LIONS!

My take

A lot of people are going overboard here… I was particularly pissed at the CBS halftime show… Media is still calling the Culter push an “armbar” even though the video clearly shows Suh’s arms extending into Cutler’s back. So as long as they continuing to bring that up I’m inclined to think they are playing for headlines. I will admit Suh’s two infamous helmet rip off sacks were borderline dirty, but hardly the things that should make you infamous. We’ve seen plenty worse by Ray Lewis or any number of Steelers or Ravens. This isn’t to defend Suh’s stomp today, but put things in perspective… Something the media clearly isn’t willing to do as they have an agenda. As for the head slams it is clear the Packer guard had Suh locked in arm-and-arm and could have easily been holding Suh down. The stomp looks like Suh thought the Packer coming from behind and the guard were continuing to try and hold him down. He reacted badly and deserves a suspension and fine… But overall this is being blown out of proportion because the Lions are the new bad boys… Or at least that is the media storyline and they are going to run that into the ground.

Have you played?

Too many people who have never played the game are the ones who are writting the NFL rules… Or claiming what is or isn’t dirty. Delhomme play deserved the penalty and the fine, but was more indicative of a rookie who didn’t know the envelope. I haven’t seen Suh do something similar since… Until yesterday. As said the Cutler play last year was a push to the back, a perfectly good tackle/hit. The Dalton hit was one where the QB released the ball while in the grasp of the d-lineman, and was exactly why there used to be a quick whistle… Until the no-nothings decided to get rid of the quick whistle.

by cokolman on Nov 25, 2011 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

I've played before.

I liked the Cutler hit. That was violently beautiful.

But on the other plays it seems he’s taking it a step too far. Like he’s always trying to rip a helmet off. And yesterday provided the undeniable proof.

I believe that the majority of the backlash is because he’s denying he purposely stomped on the GB player. Regaining his balance. Trying to remove himself from the situation. All bullshit. If he had come out and said, I screwed up. I let my emotions take over and I apologize.
