Around SBN: Sixers Vs. Celtics: Countdown To Game Seven

I decided to make this comment into a FanPost...

This is MUCH better...and I can accept this and move on.

I think this is Suh’s actual Facebook page, so I’ll go ahead and post this and then let you guys decide for yourselves. His status message today reads as follows:

In the past few hours, I have had time to reflect on yesterday’s game and I want to sincerely apologize for letting my teammates down, the organization, and especially to my fans who look to me for positive inspiration.

Playing professional sports is not a game. It is a profession with great responsibility, and where performance on and off the field should never be compromised. It requires a calm and determined demeanor, which cannot be derailed by the game, referee calls, fans or other players.

I want to reiterate my commitment to working to become a better player, and professional—on and off the field. My reaction on Thursday was unacceptable. I made a mistake, and have learned from it. I hope to direct the focus back to the task at hand — by winning.

https://www.facebook.com/suh90/posts/317547261589231

Now that is the kind of attitude I want to see. Be a man and own up to your mistakes. If this is how Ndamukong Suh TRULY feels, then I think he will be fine. If it is just a last ditch effort to avoid suspension, and he continues to act and react in the same manner as we saw on Thanksgiving, I do not think he will have a very long career in the NFL. Remember how tough NFL teams are on guys with “character issues” in the NFL draft?? Well, I think it works the same way once they are actually playing in the NFL. Nobody wants a player that takes actions that are detrimental to the success of the team as a whole.

I hope he learns his lesson this time, but there is still no doubt in my mind that he will be handed a 4 game suspension at a minimum. He may appeal and have that reduced, but I’m not too sure even that can happen. He can be a great player, and channel his aggression positively, for the benefit of his TEAM. He is not above the TEAM, and he has to learn that the team has to come first. He does not have to rip off helmets, use unnecessary roughness, slam people’s heads into the ground, and stomp on them in order to be the best DT in the NFL. He just needs to use his God given talents, his strength, and his BRAIN to use “reasonable force” to get the job done, without the psychotic episodes, and he can be a pro bowler, an all pro, and a hall of famer.

Hey anonymous internet tough guy. Thanks for the wishes that my wife and 6 year old daughter will choke on their Turkey while I watch, and then for the wish that I would also then choke on my turkey. If I am drawing that kind of response from you, then I am accomplishing my goals. DX Bitch.

Yeah I was attacked on twitter over a Suh comment too people are Jag offs

And I am weeding out the negative lions “fans” off my timeline too for the ame reason. Suh is young he will mature and while he can’t take back what he said. At least he is smart enough to realise he better come out and do better than that. If people don’t like Suh anymore because of this. Or feel the need to attack me for not saying he should be banned from the league. F THEM ALL! Thanks for posting this KDawg my man!

Appeal

I just have a hard time believing that Roger Goodell would reduce what ever punishment he hands out on this one.

(Disclaimer – I will be talking about Mike Vick here. I am not comparing Suh to Mike Vick.)

When the news about Vick case first came out, Goodell talked to him and Vick said the allegations were all false. I remember it being reported at the time Goodell handed down his NFL punishment (after the criminal punishment) that one of the things that pissed Goodell off the most (and contributed to the severity of the punishment) was the fact that Vick came in and lied to his face.

I don’t know what went on between Suh and Goodell in their meeting, but I’m wondering if we will have a similar situation here. I’m guessing Suh told Goodell the same things he’s been saying all year when asked about supposedly “dirty” plays – i.e. “He just plays aggressive, he doesn’t try to do anything dirty,it’s just his strength etc.” I wonder if Goodell will see all this, happening only 3 weeks (I believe) after their meeting (and after the nastiness of the Bears game) as a sort of slap in the face like Vick’s lies were. If that’s the case, his punishment could be more severe.

Angelo: Right….so anyways Jay, I’m sure you understand that we needed to make this move and I wanna wish you the best of luck.

Cutler: (Swoops bangs out of eyes by throwing his head back) Whatever, I don’t need this team or you.

We don't know what was said in the meeting.

I doubt Suh went in there and said anything like “Mr. Commissioner, I’m going to work on controlling my temper.” That’s essentially what this issue boils down to. He lost control of his temper.

With the caveat that I’m speculating as much as you are…It seems to me that you don’t call yourself into a meeting with the commissioner to apologize for your temper. Remember, it was Suh who set that meeting with Goodell. My guess is he brought in some footage of his “dirty” play he had been penalized for and asked what more can he do to keep from being penalized. I’m sure his forearm to Cutler’s back that was called a blow to the head was brought up.

With that said. This statement makes me feel better as a fan about his future on the field. I think it has zero effect on the length of his suspension, which I am guessing will be 2 games.

by ziggyz on Nov 26, 2011 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

I'd like to believe if he does get a suspension, it will be less than the Green Bay linebacker who was arrested for battery on Friday

otherwise Goodell will be a hipocrite in my eyes and will have a double standard, which he will if he does give Suh a suspension and not Woodson, or the crotch kicker from Minn. (think it was Minn). For that matter Lee of GB threw a punch…lost his cool (and was ejected) so there are plenty of examples of people lossing it and not being suspended.

by jalf on Nov 26, 2011 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

+1 Jalf

It just sucks for Suh, because he is going to be viewed differently than all those other guys. Woodson can basically mug WR’s and very rarely get called but a different Lions DB chucks a GB WR 7 yards downfield and gets a flag to keep a drive alive. Suh falls in to the James Harrison grouping when Badell starts looking at game tapes. And 1 last thing about Badell, if you didn’t think he was a hipocrite before this week, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN MAN?

How many lumps you want Doc?

by davis0169 on Nov 26, 2011 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

It was Minn

Robison wasn’t even ejected for his crotch-kick, and the penalty was essentially meaningless (15 yards on a kickoff that would have been a TB regardless).

I disagree that Erik Walden’s brush with the law not resulting in a suspension would be a double standard. Things that happen on the field vs. off the field stuff are quite different categories, and I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two. Depending on what the facts are with Walden’s case, a suspension may or may not be deserved.

I would feel food about that comment.

If it wasn’t so obviously written by a PR executive trying to play damage control. Suh hasn’t changed his mind. He still thinks he’s in the right, but he has been advised that he needs to put out these comments in an attempt to salvage part of his reputation. There’s a reason his attitude was completely different yesterday.

Screw that!

Smith baited him into this. It’s obvious he was holding him down. It was established this type of play was a GB strategy to get a rise out of Suh. I’m not saying that excuses Suh’s actions at all. But Suh did exactly what Smith was trying to make him do. That was the plan. Apologize?? Because their plan worked?? No way. I hope he doesn’t.

Mayhew needs to act FIRST!

Over the past incidents, which have deemed unacceptable and fined by the league, the Lions have not backed them up at all; remaining silent over the incidents which have hurt the team. Frankly, I’m surprised that after Suh’s statement after the game, that the organization didn’t at least call him out, and announce that he was being benched for the Saints, while under further review. It’s also been suggested that there is a connection with Schwartz and a lack of discipline.

It just may be that the NFL has been laying back and waiting to see if Detroit is going to step up and do the right thing. This isn’t just an indictment on Suh, but also on an organization, which has condoned his lack of apology and remorse, which is another issue, but one that they also must take ownership of. Should Mayhew suspend him for a game, perhaps the NFL might be satisfied that Detroit is making a strong enough statement, to run a one-game suspension concurrent with theirs. Without that reasonable action by the Lions, I believe we see at least two games, and perhaps three. It doesn’t help that Suh has not publicly apologized to Dietrich-Smith or the Packers, nor indicated that he has had a communication with him.

At this point, it should all be about minimizing the fallout, while exploring whether he needs some outside help with issues beyond football. At any rate, I believe he has the intelligence to rededicate himself, and become the dominant player during the play, which we count on him to be. As it stands now, he has hurt the Lions chances for making the playoffs.

And for anyone that actually cares how he says sorry, your fools! We loved that mentallity from the Pistons and even when we brought in Rashweed Wallace and he brought that same mentallity back to a Michigan team it was embraced. But now in a more violent game that moves faster than a rabbit being chased by a Grey Hound, you guys are turing the other cheek? WTF, What he did was wrong; sure everyone knows that, But I guess all you ney sayers would rather we go back 4 years and have a Defence that can’t tackle anyone, get pushed around and not stand up for themselves. I’d rather have guys like Suh and KVB; Tulloch ect. ect. ect. on our team than the others. So few of you want the bad that comes with this style of D, I don’t hear too many people talking about Woodson and his style of play, or some of the players off of other teams like the Steelers/Ravens/SF/Houston. A dominant D has to have that edge and we finally have that edge and I’m happy to see it.

I just don't like self promoting athletes Davis, never have, and when Suh won't talk to the local press except on Wednesdays....

Then brag to the interviewers that “you’ll never find out anything about me”, but then makes himself available to the national press to promote something he’s sold himself out for, then piss on him.

Coupled with this latest incident. Screwwwwwww him….my energy after this post will try to refocus on the players that aren’t selfish self promoters and clean but hard players,,,LoJack, Willie Young, Delmas…etc.etc.etc.

Birkett says it very well.

But, as Bulluck recalls, Haynesworth left the locker room truly remorseful that day — something Suh, washed Facebook apology and all, still hasn’t mustered.
It took Suh some 29 hours to issue a second, still-incomplete apology, failing to directly acknowledge his actions and leaving Dietrich-Smith out of a three-paragraph statement posted on his fan page moments after the Lions released their own condemnation of his stomp as a team.
Haynesworth, who like Suh was ejected in the third quarter, apologized immediately after the game to Gurode and others.
He called his act "disgusting," insisted he wasn’t a dirty player and said he felt like he "disgraced the game, disgraced my team and disgraced my last name."

I just can’t understand how 99% (scientifically measured) of the fans here rallied against picking up Haynesworth because he’s dirty (and lazy) but yet so many here (42% according to some observers) think Suh wasn’t dirty in the stomp.

I understand you being hell bent on Suh apologizing to Deitrich-Smith..

And I respect your opinion, but I’m not sure I would want him to apologize to our heated division rival anyway. It does look bad that a guy like Haynesworth, who has an established dirty player reputation, seems to have taken the higher road in a similar situation, but Ndamukong Suh is not Albert Haynesworth, the Detroit Lions are not the Tennessee Titans, and the rest of the Lion’s players are not the same players that were on Fat Albert’s Tennessee team. There are so many potential disparities between the two organizations and their respective players, that we can not possibly hope to accurately determine the REAL reason why Albert Haynesworth actually DID apologize. He could have been ordered to do so by the team GM, the coaches, or goaded by the players who were the team leaders. Suh is widely considered the face of the Lion’s franchise, defensively at a minimum. He is supposedly a leader. Maybe none of the Lion’s players had the balls (or just didn’t care enough) to say something to his face, like Bullock did to Haynesworth.

Jim Schwartz is clearly behind his star player. He refuses to discipline him, stating that if there is ANY discipline that it will come from the NFL. If Schwartz is behind Suh, and releasing statements like this, then my bet is that Martin Mayhew gives Schwartz that much control over the player personnel, and that he too will keep quiet about it. That leaves the players and the PR department to do something about it. The only person I can imagine saying anything to Ndamukong Suh would be KVB…and I haven’t seen anything of the sort on that front. So the PR department is solely tasked with damage control…and they seem to be doing a less than adequate job.

Suh is going to do what Suh wants to do, which is why Roger Goodell will have to take action and make an example out of the incident. Hopefully it will teach the kid a lesson, and hopefully he is sincerely remorseful for his actions, as the released statement suggests. If he does not learn from his mistakes, if the repercussions do not fit the “crime”, and if his statement was not sincere, then he will continue to cost his team games…and ultimately buy his own ticket out of town. If that happens, and if he STILL continues his egregious ways AFTER he leaves Detroit…well like old Jerry Glandville said, “The NFL stands for Not For Long…”. I would finish that statement by changing the quote slightly, to read “The NFL stand for Not For Long when you keep fu**ing playing like that”!

Del

There is a HUGE difference between WWE stomping on the arm of a player and what Haynes did, he stomped on a players head who had no helmet on, when he did it with his cleats. Now a stomp is a stomp, but if I was about to get stomped on I would rather have my arm stomped on than my head. Now had Suh pinned the GB players arm to the ground and smushed a bug style of stomp yeah suspend the heck out of him, but his fit of rage didn’t even come close to that.

Also guys...

We should all keep in mind that not EVERYTHING that happens in the lives of these players is published by the media. If they want to uphold the story, and the image of Suh as a dirty player, then if he actually DID apologize to Dietrich-Smith on his own time, and the media found out about it, they might not report it anyway.

Suh might have found a way to contact Deitrich-Smith personally, and he may have made amends with an apology privately. Maybe he also wants to uphold his “badass” persona, who knows? Like I said, the media doesn’t report everything that happens.

You're getting it both ways now

You don’t like the second apology because pr had an obvious hand in it, so if it did include the public apology, you’d still say it was forced.
As for Suh and the brand he promotes and finds so important..above the team I think is how you feel… Then by not apologizing and possibly risking that may show he is either moving beyond the brand, or hasn’t cared as much about the brand as you believe
Does that make sense?

but don't you see how

the same criticism you’ve applied to him can still work against him if/when he apologizes? he is just protecting his brand, etc..

what I care about here is what he does going forward, and I have no idea if he owes that Packer an apology. That guy could’ve been being dirty all game, and Suh stomped but I saw it more as a hissy kind of stomp rather than a take aim I am crushing your skull kind of stomp.

As a fan, I would like to see him mature- realize that they’re looking to call those penalties on him, especially since he didn’t distance himself from the rep from the beginning, and he has to be more careful in those critical situations… even more so if people know they can get him out of the game by goading him into losing his cool.

Suh himself said it wasn't a stomp

Why would he apologize for something he doesn’t believe he’s in the wrong for? That would be PR posturing bullshit just like the statement he released today was, if not more so.

He should be remorseful for raging like an idiot, giving GB the touchdown, and essentially losing the game for the team. For that, Dietrich-Smith deserves no apology.

by Kalzilla on Nov 26, 2011 6:47 PM EST reply actions

Because, intentional or accidedntal

He did stomp on the guy and that guy deserves an apology. Remorse for an accident is a sign of maturity.

BTW, no part of me believes it was accidental. He clearly looks down in Smith’s direction before stomping his foot.

I see how an apology would look classy

But I also don’t feel that not apologizing makes him less classy. EDS is a bitter rival and Suh doesn’t feel like he was out of line in his actions. Standing up for yourself is also a sign of maturity. Suh apologized to all the people he felt deserved apology.

Of course if Suh is lying about what his intentions were then this is all different. You can’t truly make out his intentions through watching the video. The only thing he can do now is show everybody that they are wrong about him through his play. We’ll have to see if he shapes up or degenerates.

I do feel that he deserves a benching/reduction of playtime just as much as Gosder Cherilus did with his personal foul. I guess Schwartz would argue that Cherilus committed his offense when the game was still on the line, but forcing us down 0-14 against the Packers was just as bad. It’s unfair to Gosder if Schwartz doesn’t discipline equally him for the penalty.

Schwartz is dancing on a fine line here

If he does not penalize Suh he is telling all his players the only thing that matters is talent. If you have enough of it, I will not hold you accountable for your actions. That is a terrible message to send because teams only have a half dozen or so stars and the rest of the guys are the backbone of your team. You alienate them and you lose your job.

If he does not penalize Suh he is doing exactly what I accused him of doing all the way back then. Punishing a player because he is expendable while ignoring more important players and their detrimental actions.

You guys have all said it better then I ever could.

I’ve made my point regarding Suh.

Now I await this coming week to see how this is all handled by the Lions, Schwartz and the NFL, in both words and deeds.

I’m going to try to stay focused on the hardworkers on the team.

Hopefully, the Lions play tough without Suh.

I believe he will come back better, and becoe a permanent fixture in the opposing team’s backfield.

The team needs to regroup, and somehow find a way to triumph over the Saints. Detroit is on the outside looking in now, with Chicago the 5th seed and Atlanta, the 6th.

Suh plays hard, del.

I think all this rock throwing is getting out of control. He screwed up. He know it. Vilifying this guy to this extent is ridiculous. He’ll get his suspension (although I for one, hopes he doesn’t) and he’ll pay his fine.

We’ve all made bad decisions in the heat of battle. This is not even CLOSE to one of the worst things I’ve seen in football. It’s laughable to me at all the high-horse riders out there. I’ve moved past it and I still think Suh is a great player, hard worker and key to our future successes.

by DrewsLions on Nov 28, 2011 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

For me, in the end, he is still a Lion

I mean if this was a friend or a family member that did something like this. You would support them through this diificlut situation. You might have a few harsh words for them behind close doors, But you would support, I think.

So the next time Suh suits up(if at all this season). I will still cheer for him because he is a Lion.

Awww Drew, I'm kind of weary of the Suh debate and just want to now focus....

On the good hardworking, hard nosed yet, willing to play within the confines of today’s NFL rules ballplayers that we’ll have playing on Sunday. You know, the ones that don’t embarrass the Lions organization, the fan base, and then themselves by coming out with retarded excuses even after having a couple of hours to reflect.

Anything less then a 2 games suspension and then a 1 game benching will be inadequate IMO. At least the Lions finally seen the light and are demanding that Suh undergoes anger management counseling. Maybe Omaha Steaks and Subway should make him do the same.

Josh.....I figured you might appreciate this....pretty strong article with the focus on Schwartz.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=jc-cole_ndamukong_suh_lions_stomp_packers_112411

This all comes back to Schwartz. He has done much to turn the Lions around, starting with the excitement of a 5-0 start. However, in the moments after Detroit’s first loss on Oct. 16 against San Francisco at home, Schwartz also lost his cool. After a bad exchange with counterpart Jim Harbaugh, Schwartz lost control and chased Harbaugh down the field.

In some respects, it was comical. At the same time, it probably warranted a fine. Now, weeks later, the Lions are playing like a team that doesn’t know how to handle tough situations. What a shocker. Players take their cues from the people in charge.

There is nothing in that article that is off base IMHO

and I agree, JS and Harbaugh should have been fined.

I don't know they should have been fined

But think the message can trickle down, so Schwartz flying off the handle can open the door for others to act crazy too. While the FO has focused on talent, I think Schwartz does need to work on channeling the teams emotions. We can’t keep getting penalties at the costliest of times against the better teams and expect to win.

Just found this on NFL.com
The Detroit Lions are bracing for an NFL-mandated suspension of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who stomped on Green Bay Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith in Thursday’s game, with the only question being for how long. Several of Suh’s teammates believe a suspension is warranted, given his repeated rule bending.

Team sources said Sunday that some teammates believe Suh’s actions are selfish, and they wish the Lions and/or league had done more to discipline the second-year pro in the past to curb his behavior. They wonder if these kind of acts will continue unless Suh is dealt with severely.

The Lions put out a statement this week condemning his actions — something some players wish would have come sooner — and the NFL continues to review the matter. A league source said the possibility of a multi-game suspension exists, but those have been very rare in the recent history of on-field discipline.

A final decision from the league will come early this week.

2-3 games should do it

unpaid, of course. I like Suh, like his aggressiveness, but he needs to learn to play aggressive without being stupid. Who cares if the other team is doing something to you. It’s football, albeit a much wussier game since Goodell took over. Let the other team get the penalty and Suh take the high road for a change. Maybe anger management classes would help. So far I’ve seen Suh be all about himself and not about the team. that needs to change and it needs to come from Schwartz. If Suh keeps it up, sit him on the bench and fine him game checks for it. He’ll wise up eventually. A good talking to from the rest of the D-line wouldn’t hurt, either.

If you asked me to list my 5 favorite(current) Lions. Suh would not make my list, even before "Stomp Gate"

1. Matthew Stafford
2. Calvin Johnson
3. Amari Spievey
4. DeAndre Levy
5. Bobby Carpenter

I said this in another thread. My loyalty is with the Detroit Lions, not with any one player.

maybe him and Schwartz should attend together- Schwartz is the guy the chased down an opposing coach looking ready to fight...

does he actually have a track record of getting angry and not controlling himself?
is there a track record of him cussing out a metermaid, highway patrol, teachers at Nebraska, coaches or other players? Smashing up locker rooms and destroying property? Any other assaults off the field?

Is his anger that what caused him to get the dirty label? or is this the only thing on record where he couldn’t control his emotions?

This speaks of PR BS more than anything, UNLESS Suh asked for the counseling and feels he has an issue with anger

Here it is....

It’s been trickling out bit by bit, that he wasn’t a choirboy at Nebraska I’m not going to go back and find that article by article, but the guy needs a little something.

Schwartz should at least buy the late night infomercial 2 disc CD set and listen to how to lose some of your ego in 3 easy steps.
