Ask a Saints Fan

Hello Lions fans!  Grumps from Canal Street Chronicles here.

It’s time for our teams to go Prime Time this week, after the NFL powers that be mercifully moved the game between our two talented teams to the evening slot, replacing the one sided shellacking that will be Patriots vs. Colts (seriously, who thinks the Pats will be able to keep up with the high-powered Colts Offense).

Feel free to ask anything you care to about the Saints, make predictions for the game, or trash talk as you see fit.

Someone will be around to answer your questions.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Pride of Detroit or its writers. FanPosts are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable fans.

To tell the truth only the Rams defense has challenged us

They got pressure with their front four expecially there DE and got to Brees
We lost a shootout to GB and our coach got hurt in Tampa and we looked lost
Get to brees with your DE’s and play coverage and you have a shot

So, you're saying, Hurt the coach and we got a shot.

I think we can handle that.

I was actually sitting at a bar in Downtown New Orleans

Watching that Saints/Packer game… Packers came out on fire. Of course, I had my Lions shirt on and was cheering with the Saint fans… but to no avail.

Well

I tend to agree with mississippi.

You need to get pressure from your D-line. That is when Brees rushes his throws. Regardless of the scheme, if given enough time, Brees usually is able to put the ball where he wants it.

That being said. Your D-line to me is going to be a great match-up for our O-line. I love the depth you have on your line. Will be a great yardstick to measure our O-lines overall ability. They have been playing well ever since getting manhandled vs. the Rams.

From the stats that I see it looks to be Charles Brown. Would you say that is the case?

Bushrod has been our starter since 2009 has has done an acceptable job

At times he does get beaten but then Payton agjust the blocking scheme to help him out and all in all Drews blind side stays pretty clean
We had a rotating door at RT when Strief got hurt earlier but he has been back since after the Rams game and drew has stayed pretty clean I dont believe he has been sacked since then but i’m cant swear to it

by mississippisaintsfan on Nov 30, 2011 7:58 AM EST up reply actions

Both Bushrod and Strief are equally capable…the struggle most against speed rushers. And while DLP has done a good job of filling in at center….he’s hardly top notch. One of the many reasons the Saints struggle against 3-4 teams, he can’t handle any 1 on 1 bull rush.

If I can ask you guys a question

How’s the O-line looking this year? Specifically the left tackle? I know there was trouble there in previous years. (Stafford’s injuries attest to that.)

As well, If Suh is out, who replaces him?

Finally, the Lions got screwed by the refs on Thanksgiving. The Saints have been getting screwed by the refs all year, do you think that two teams getting screwed by the refs meeting in a game is like dividing by zero?

So-so IMO

Backus(LT) has allowed the most sacks(6). But again he has faced some of the best pass rushers in the league. He is solid against speed rushers, but has problems with the bull rushers. Overall the Lions O-line pass blocks well. They lack something in the run game.

Lucky, we have depth at DT. I see Nick “No-Fair” Fairely starting in place of Suh, with a lot of Sammie Lee Hill in rotation.

Groaan
Stafford’s injuries attest to that.

That’s just a common misconception around the NFL about the Lions. Left tackle is probably the most consistent spot of the offensive line, and it has been that way for the last decade or so with Jeff Backus never missing an NFL game in his career. As far as this year, the sack numbers are up. The Lions are 13th in the league so far compared to 7th last year.

Combination of a multitude of things

He took a ton of hits his rookie year, and many of them were brutal. Still, four injuries is a lot, so luck definately played its part. I also don’t think he is made of steel, but he certainly isn’t an injury waiting to happen.

Personally...

I think Suh being out gives our defense an advantage.

DLine is the strength and the deepest position… The tackle rotation will be Williams, Fairley, SLH, and Fluellen… I don’t expect ANY drop off in DLine play… I DO expect a shake up in how N.O. Oline protection… who do they double? Do they need to double? these issues should allow for an early play to be made.

Weird question:

Do you think your game vs. St Louis was a result of a city being high on their World Series championship? (I know the trophy was in the stadium at one point)

‘Cause I don’t think I’m alone when I say I NEVER thought the Rams would pull that out.

Was it a different Rams team? (I admit I haven’t watched much Rams football this year) Or a different Saints team?
(I know the answer is most likely some of each, but for the sake of discussion, if you had to choose one?)

Well

For some reason, the Rams play us tough. We have crapped the bed a few times recently against them. However, I do think that the loss was a combination of: the crowd energy was huge and the Baseball championship certainly helped; good pass rush and our O-line forget to bring their ability from NOLA; and that Drew tried to get points back in a hurry prior to the half and forced a throw that compounded our deficit a few plays later.

It’s obviously clear that the Saints are on a roll, and the Lions have a lot of things not going their way right now. Do people in NO consider this game a lock for the Saints? Or are they expecting a close game?

Formerly WestSideLionsFan. Fan of all Detroit sports teams.

by WalterM on Nov 29, 2011 5:23 PM EST reply actions

Simply put

All outsider opinions so bare with me if you think I am off:

You have IMO the best WR in the game. You have a QB who is inconsistent at times but has the ability to put up ridiculous stats. Your RB situation is an unknown at this point in time (to bad about Best, Smith looked great until his ankle injury and we don’t know if he will play, Morris looks good to). Your D-line is disgustingly deep and talented. Truth be told, other than Tulloch I don’t know much about your LB’s or secondary.

Summary: I don’t consider this game even close to being a lock. I think the Lions are a very good team (and from what I have read on this site today I am far more optimistic about their playoff chances than most of you) that the Saints cannot take lightly. I mentioned earlier that I think your D-line will be a great test for our O-line. I feel this game will be a high scoring shoot-out.

the Lions D vs the Saints O. If the Lions can slow down the Saints offense a bit. Say around 24 points. Than I think the Lions got a shot.

Well my opinion has been up lifted today

I was really worried about this game but 2 things changed we smoked the Giants and Suh isn’t playing
I thought we would win in a close game because it was in our dome (the thunderdome) and because we seem to show up big against good teams and lay an egg with bad teams
But I feel much better today

by mississippisaintsfan on Nov 29, 2011 7:13 PM EST up reply actions

Having Suh out doens't necessarily mean the Dline will be any less effective

They’re really deep. No one knows how good Sammie Hill is (he started as a rookie two years ago and is much better now than he was).

But I will say having some momentum and home field advantage is big…

The boys are back in town!

by rames on Nov 29, 2011 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

well that kinda put a damper on my thoughts I thought no Suh and your D line would be affected badly

But like I said o9t’s still in our dome and we have a tendencies to play big in big games against good teams
Oh and I forgot to mention that freak of a reciever you have we need to find a way to slow him down
Because if we let him run loose down field and we dont get to and rattle stafford it will be a shootout

Saints had a history of being bad

Just curious as a Lions fan what the journey has been like.

Was there a time when you knew you had turned the corner for good? Could you see it coming? Was it consistent wins? Beating teams you shouldn’t have. Signing Drew?

When did you know that you could trust this team to be good consistently

Interested in a fans perspective on this who also has suffered through at times a brutal franchise.

Our second year of Drew and Sean

Their first year we went to the nfc championship and their second year we weren’t as good but there was a vast improvement 2 years in a row
And I knew as long as we had Drew and Sean we would never be the Aints again

I suffered through it for over 30 years. I’m one of the resident naysayers that make the kiddies get all riled up anytime I say the Saints are in for a tough game. Honestly…the suffering doesn’t go away. We’ve been to 3 playoffs in 5+ years, 2 NFC championship games 1 Super Bowl victory and I still expect the Saints to find ways to lose games. It’s merely a nice change of pace when they don’t.

I still won’t say we’ve turned the corner for good…because honestly the only thing that’s keeping us from falling off the heap is our QB. We’re not a team like the 9ers that can play hard and win in my opinion if Drew leaves in free agency, or gets hurt (knock on wood) and the like. Honestly, I didn’t think we’d stay competitive and had gotten over the hump until the end of last season….yes, even after winning the Super Bowl. Now I know that barring an injury to Drew we’ll be competitive for at least another two or three years after this one. Unfortunately 30+ years of abysmal failure and being mocked just don’t go away….at least they haven’t for me. Not sure anything short of a dynastic team would do it.

Very interesting perspective

It seems the Saints were built to outscore people which kind of seems like the way to go in this recent NFL.

Just curious since you have been a fan for so long. Would you prefer the team be built on defense like a San Fran, Ravens or Bucs of old?

Because as I said with the way the NFL is going seems like the Saints model is the one to go with.

Star QB and lots of weapons.

I’ve been a fan long enough to see it both ways. I remember the highlights of the Dome Patrol days where our defense was unquestionably one of the top two or three in all of football. One year I do believe we gave up just over 200 points the entire season and I think it remains one of the top 5 seasons every scoring wise by a defense after games went to 16. However….an incredibly defense never even won us a playoff game. People may claim that defense wins championships….but if you go back over the last 25 years…it would seem the opposite is true. No disrespect to Tampa or Baltimore.

I’d prefer a little more balance…but if I had to choose…I guess I’d pick the offensive version over the defensive.

We had great defense

With the “dome patrol” Ricky Jackson, Sam Mills, Vaughn Johnson, Pat Swilling. The best linebacker tandem ever. The problem was we were in the same division as San Fransisco when they had Joe Montana, then Steve Young.

I’d pick offense.

I hated our QB we had Arron Brooks was a nightmare

So when we got Drew I knew it would be a great thing ( but we signed decent QB’s before who fell flat on thier face so i wasn’t sure)
As far as Sean Peyton goes I think I knew his first year that he was a mad sciencetist and if we loose we would always go down swinging
It’s really when Sean Peyton met with the owner in 2009 and said he wanted Greg Williams as a DC and the owner said no he was too expensive
Then Payton made a deal where he would pay an additional $250,000 a year out of his own salary to get Wiliams and the Saints went for it thhat we were set
That was the year we won the superbowl and Greg Williams has turned down HC jobs to stay here since then because of the offense Payton and Brees I knew we had turned the corner for a long time

by mississippisaintsfan on Nov 30, 2011 8:19 AM EST up reply actions

I expected nothing from Payton. I didn’t know him…hadn’t heard of him…only knew he came from Dallas and had Parcell linkage. My expectation was he’d be gone inside 4 years. After all…that’s how it’s been since my birth…Mora not withstanding.

Drew….I knew he was good in San Diego. Not great like he has been…but good and solid. Unlike 90% of the Saints fans…I didn’t mind Brooks in the least. Going by just the numbers…he was one of, if not the, best QB we ever had and led us to the only playoff victory in the history of the organization at the time. Considering the severity of the shoulder injury that Drew was coming in with….I expected him to come in a bit short of Brooks’ numbers at his best, simply from past historical indications.

Hindsight is 20/20…but I tell the truth of how I felt and how every Saint fan I knew felt at the time. Most of us were hoping to draft a QB that year and be able to mold a true franchise QB. I wasn’t disappointed that we signed Drew, I knew he was good if he could come back from injury, but I admit I was disappointed that we weren’t going to be starting over from scratch, simply because I felt at the time that starting from scratch was exactly what the team needed.

Having our defense on the field is the weakness of our defense. Saints don’t have a pass rush…so expect to have all day to throw if we don’t blitz. However, the Saints blitz more often than any team in the league…60%. We do this because as Stujo likes to say…GW is trying to make chicken salad out of chicken s%&t. Our linebackers can’t cover backs and TE’s and we display some of the worst tackling of any team. Our starting CBs are above average, especially Greer. Main weakness is definitely the linebacking corp and safeties in pass coverage.

Disagree

Having a physical back helps running attacks tremendously (see Barber, Marion this year) Having at least the threat of being able to bull for short yardage conversions makes play action that much more effective.

[...]when Giants coach Steve Owen, a certified defensive genius, was asked how he planned to stop Nagurski, he said: "With a shotgun, as he’s leaving the dressing room."

The truth of the matter is that Leshoure starts back at Square 1, recovering from an injury that saps high expectations.

Does Jimmy Graham have any weaknesses?

We don’t usually have TOO much trouble with TE’s, there are exceptions though, but Jimmy seems to have no weakness. He’s fast, physical, and extremely athletic. How do you stop him?

This year we are in good shape as all are healthy
The only problem is next year one will have to go and I think its going to be a crowd favorite Chris Ivory and fast bruising power back who was our team rushing leader lasr year

Greer will not be called upon to cover Calvin…just like he wasn’t really with Andre. Greer covers one side of the field for the most part and doesn’t switch it up too often. He’ll line up versus whoever is on his side of the field. If you’re staring at the backs of the defensive line….Greer is lined up on the left 90% of the time regardless of who is there.

I often wonder with the holding penalties if the O line is scared to let Matt get hit so they figure what the hell, I will take this guy to the ground and hope I don’t get caught.

I mean I feel like Backus reputation has been forever killed for letting Peppers get Matt even though for the most part he as been at least average in pass protection

Yep. Multiple penalties particularly holding and personal fouls will hurt big time.

Hard to believe when Brandon Jacobs was taunting like a fool in the endzone for a long time doesn’t get flagged.

But of course when Malcolm Jenkins makes a perfectly clean hit he get’s flagged. So did Roby for “Minor” trash talking.

And the “soft” hit shortly on Manning right when ball was released. Flagged. Refs suck balls this season

All this talk and nothing about Stafford glove coming off for this game

Here’s some food for thought

Stafford’s TD to INT rate before the glove came on
19TD to 4INT’s

Stafford’s TD to INT rate after the gloves came of
7TD to 9INT’s

My 1st retort to that would be it’s his 1st game with his gloves off, well if he’s been sitting this entire time I would favor that but since he’s been playing there should be no worry of rust.

Lions 4-1 on the road this year with all the experts favoring the the Saints

In my view were playing with house money for this game, no one really expects us to win, with Stafford not wearing his gloves I expect him to be more like the 19 TD to 4 INT Stafford and really fling the football. Suh being out a game or two doesn’t scare me at all, we have one of the deepest D-line in the NFL. This is a perfect chance for Williams, Hill and Fairly to shine for the next game or two.

And I claiming a Lions win, NO!!!!!!!!! but if you don’t put us away fast and let us hang around we could be a very dangerous team. Even more dangerous if Houston and Smith suit up for the game!!!

Looking forward to Sunday’s game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our secondary isn’t terribly at all. Both starting corners are average to above average with Greer actually being a very solid corner. Where Jenkins hasn’t lived up to potential he’s still a better starting free safety than 2/3 of the league. The issue with our secondary is the pass rush. No pass rush means we have to blitz constantly which forces our secondary into a lot of man coverages or rolling safeties. Because of it they play a bit lose to try and protect themselves. As to what the Rams did well…they got to Brees in under 1.5 seconds pretty much every snap. Our tackles couldn’t handle their speed rush.

Do you think we'll be able to limit your offense the way we did with GB?

We held them to 7 at half and they scored on short-fields from turnovers and after we lost our 2 best pass defenders + Suh in the 2nd half. Hopefully Houston and Delmas will play this week and Fairley can fill in well for Suh.

As awesome as Houston's numbers are.

I’m still firmly of the belief that Wright is better.

It all depends on who wins the battle at the line of scrimmage. That is a strength versus strength battle. I am honestly curious if Payton might not be planning on running some draws to try to neutralize your pass rush.

It’s possible…but I worry about your secondary’s ability to cover when we spread out with 4 WRs and Graham. If you can get to us with your four guys only…yes you can stop us. If not, the game will probably wind up being a shootout.

I've been

a huge fan of the Saints ever since the 2006 draft when you picked up Reggie Bush (my all time favorite college player). I’ve always been a diehard of the Lions, but I didn’t have a “B” team, so I started following them closely, and ever since then I’ve been hooked. While I only went through 1 year of Saints misery, I’m glad that I’m not one of those that hopped on the bandwagon after their SB victory, and I got a little taste of what my team winning the superbowl would be like. I wish you guys luck throughout the season, I can tell from this thread and from canal st chronicles that you have a class act fanbase, can’t wait for sunday!

Reggie Bush

He should have to explain to the players at USC why there not able to play in a bowl game this year. : (

While i've lost the respect for Reggie I once had

I decided to stick with the Saints as my permanent B team

I’m glad that y’all have been able to rid yourself of the ill effects of the Matt Millen era. I honestly don’t understand how his tenure lasted as long as it did.

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 1, 2011 9:08 AM EST up reply actions

No one did

Except William Clay Ford. I don’t even think Millen understood it. But then again, he obviously doesn’t understand much.

One of our former stellar head coaches

Darryl Rogers once asked: "What does a guy have to do to get fired around here. Millen proved the answer was a lot.

He hasn’t seen a lot of playing time, except for when Will Smith was suspended the first two games. He has 4 tackles, 2 sacks and one forced fumble.

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 1, 2011 9:12 AM EST up reply actions

imo he should see more.

Good depth guy you can rotate in there who will not only help keep Smith fresh for the 4q he’ll make some plays along the way.

I can’t say why they haven’t done so…it isn’t like we don’t need help rushing the QB,

Not feeling positive about this game

Which is ironic because everytime I don’t feel good about us going into a game we win (normally from a come from behind fashion that pisses me off the first half of the game) but when I’m really hyped about a game we blow it. We’re really hurting without houston and suh. In a masochistic sense I kind of want us to bomb so I can quote the Diddly Poo rant for a week like I did when the Seahawks upset you guys last year in the Playoffs(!?)..it would be karmic retribution to some extent.

Either way here’s hoping for a good game. Feebly probably.

Will Calvin get the bracket coverage he usually gets

or because of the blitz, will he see more one on ones? Linehan likes to move him around and even put him in the slot to get him matchups, but most teams play cover 2 shell with their safeties as a response…

by rames on Dec 2, 2011 11:30 AM EST reply actions

The Saints will probably roll coverage to him off of a safety or corner blitz etc. He’ll see his share of single coverage stuff on occasion, but I doubt he’ll see too much of it. The Saints do a lot of exotic blitzes mixes pocket zones and man coverage on various sides at the same time.
