Lions Notes: Actor Wendell Pierce Also Puts Jared Allen In His Place
- According to Jason La Canfora, the 2012 league year will begin at 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) on March 13. This means you will no longer need to stay up until midnight for news of signings and trades to start trickling in.
- Dave Birkett reports that Mikel Leshoure's rehab is on schedule and he has started running on an underwater treadmill.
- Shaun Hill was selected earlier this week as the Lions' Ed Block Courage Award recipient. (Hill's father died in an accident last January.)
- Wendell Pierce, a New Orleans native and an actor known best for his roles in The Wire and Treme, joined Gunther Cunningham in taking Jared Allen to task for his comments earlier this week. Allen didn't only trash Detroit, he also trashed New Orleans, and Pierce responded with several tweets on Friday. The last one from his response was my favorite: "What Jared Allen needs to do is come to the Treme Gumbo Fest tomorrow. No need to practice Detroit is gonna STOMP you Sunday."
- The Saints had started planning how to stop Calvin Johnson six or seven weeks ago by using the double-team-jam-at-the-line technique in practice.
- The NFL is going to hold a "Super Regional Combine" at Ford Field on March 30 and 31. The combine will be the culmination of several regional combines that serve the purpose of giving players not invited to the main combine a chance to work out in front of scouts.
- Nate Burleson's fashion was critiqued by Tim Gunn, the host of "Project Runway," earlier this week when Gunn was at WXYZ. Burleson had a funny response to Gunn's comments.

Not sure what he's talkin about?
Like Minneappolis is a real gem of a town, I live about 5-6 hours from there & I live in MI (da’U.P’) Grew up in Livonia/Westland area though & feel like that’s “Home”. Somethin only OG Michiganders can comprehend. And they hafta have the most retarded highway set-up in the US, what freakin genius thought that 1 up? I’d rather live in Detroit anyday over Minneappolis, I mean there’s alota rick deep tradition & history embedded in our streets & next time you come 2 town, you better roll your windows up & lock your doors, a good idea when you’re drivin in Detroit anyways, but we eat chumps like you for breakfast!
i actually love the Twin Cities...but i have family in Detroit too.
People pick on Detroit because its easy due to the unemployment and crime rates. The city has some great things to offer though.

So your argument for Detroit is?
That you’d better watch out when you drive through town…you know, you’re right. Sounds like an amazing place to live. And through reading your post it appears that the local public education is terrific. Let me pack up my stuff right now and head for Detroit…who’s with me? Anyone?…No?
Detroit needed a new football stadium – Done.
Minnesota needs to beg for a stadium
Roof caves in, the Vikings have to play a "home game" in Detroit. So exactly which city has economic issues?

I guess the part of Jared Allen's comment I didn't really get
was that everything is brown but there’s snow on the ground. If there is snow on the ground, how can you tell if everything is brown or not?

I think what Allen said is rather silly
but, if we’re going to compare roads and road networks Detroit’s so dilapidated it’s beyond compare. As far as layout and quality Detroit is easily in my top 3 hated beyond NYC (Manhattan) and Chicago. Unfortunately I have to go to 2/3 of those somewhat regularly :(

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I HATE JARED ALLEN.
Out of all the asshole criminal players in the league(rothlesberger stallworth etc) I hate Allen the most. Besides inner division rival I don’t know why. I just do. Shooting his mouth off about Detroit has not helped. I hope backus owns his ass tomorrow.

Hate on Allen...
Man, I know. Allen collapses pockets like the Lions collapse their own potential. It started off so nice and rosy and now the Lions smell like crap.
Suh is out because he has the temperament of a 5 yr old, Stafford has been hit in the head too many times and appears to have gone color blind (only reason I can come up with that he has forgotten what jersey his team wears), and the secondary has been exposed as having almost as little talent as Minnesota’s.
Do you know Grime?
Could you go get him to come post instead of you?

I'm not hating on the Lions
In fact, I have been a fan of the Lions for years…albeit in a sympathetic way. I was a fan of Harrington’s (sorry) out of college and really wanted to see him do well. However, bashing Jared Allen because he doesn’t like your town (especially when bashing him in such a hypocritical and classless manner) just seems a bit petty. Just enjoy the success the Lions “were” having and hope the front office makes some moves in the offseason to better the team.
Allen said the same things last year.
We all know how Allen feels about Detroit. He doesn’t like it. I honestly don’t see why it’s being played up…again. I dislike Jared Allen for one reason, he’s a Viking. I could honestly care less about his feelings towards the City of Detroit. Although, I do feel that it is a little classless to attack the City like that. You play in a stadium against a team. The back drop is inconsequential (unless that back drop is the Super Bowl). Attack the Team, not the City.
LITTLE MAN IN BACKFIELD! LITTLE MAN IN BACKFIELD! GO STEFAN LOGAN!

I actually can give props for self deprecating humor
but this guy was somehow trying to be serious!
So Bighair, did you catch that blurb about Gunny giving Wright a 2 hour lecture this week about the NO gaffs?? It was mentioned that PFF has Wright as 8th worst CB this season! Sure he’s had some big moments but I thought he’s been a lot more sound than that.

I missed that I guess...
Do you have a link to that PFF article? I’d really like to see that, cause me, as well as pretty much the rest of P.O.D. thinks he’s been pretty freakin good this year, sans the N.O game.
Really, his only faults that I’ve seen is maybe misunderstanding some of the safety coverages. A few times it seems like he’s thought there was going to be safety help, and there wasn’t, so he got blown by. I mean, he’s held some pretty damn good receivers to low catches/yards.

no I don't, and I can't get PFF to load right now for some reason

I see it listed him as worst 10 not 8th worst, for what it’s worth.

well Aso hasn't been all that great this year in m2m
but then again PFF can have some odd results. Basically I’ve been viewing Wright much the same as the rest here, as having pretty solid performances. You brought up an interesting point about him, not always sure of where his support is. Hopefully given more time in the system, and with more reliable help, that will be corrected. I’d be curious to see how many times Wright has been targeted compared to Houston
If you are disappointed it is only because you have chosen to set your expectations at a level that was never reasonable in the first place.
--> Don't blame the Lions. Blame yourself for not keeping your perspective.
-Tufflynx
That's also true
Number 2 CB’s who have a very solid #1 corner opposite probably will get targeted more, thus giving up more receptions and worse stats. Houston has been excellent this year, so maybe that’s a reason why Wright has been graded so low. Also, I think PFF takes a big account for catches given up, right? And Easy E may give up 6 or 7 catches, but for like 50 yards and no TD’s. I’ll take that over 3 catches for 100 yards any day.

All this trash talking and “defending” a player for a team that is about to leave your city. As worse as Detroit and as bad as our history is, at least we can manage to fill a 100K stadium (The Big House) on Saturdays and fill up another 56K stadium on Sundays.

To be fair,
We have a crazy long consecutive sellout streak going at the metrodome. We can also fill it with snow when necessary to crap off a horribly craptastic season.
Also, I apologize for Bagel’s insult to your secondary. Everybody in your secondary can either cover or tackle, sometimes both at the same time! I count 1 guy who can tackle in ours, seeing as the other one got hurt, and we have no more guys who can actually cover seeing as the one we had is on indefinite suspension. And I know there’s a large contingent (myself included) who want that guy cut ASAP if he’s convicted.
Also: Could you please not bring up our stadium issues? We’re acutely aware that our politicians heads are totally up their asses already.
sorry to touch on a sore point
but I’m of the belief no government should be handing out tax payer money for stadiums. At worst they should be limited to underwriting a bond for it if it’s first secured interest in revenues with the end result of not having any equity, ownership, or responsibility in it.
Still, that’s not how things work so it really sucks to see y’all having this struggle.
If you are disappointed it is only because you have chosen to set your expectations at a level that was never reasonable in the first place.
--> Don't blame the Lions. Blame yourself for not keeping your perspective.
-Tufflynx
The White Earth Ojibwe have that part dealt with.
They’ll cover the portion that the State would otherwise have to pay, as long as the stadium is built at the Arden Hills site and they get to build a shiny new casino there. Expected profits from the casino would bring something like $150 million in new revenue to the state every year, so after the projected 2 years it would take to pay off that part of the stadium, it’s a massive boost for the state.
Here’s a link to our thread on it, and it has a link to more details if you want them:
http://www.dailynorseman.com/2011/12/6/2616572/white-earth-ojibwa-offer-interesting-solution-to-vikings-stadium
Naturally, as it’s a proposal that would work and make sense both financially and in the “we get to keep an NFL franchise” sense, it will very likely be totally shot down.

The Denver Chicago game is set up perfectly for the Broncos
Chicago is miserably, horribly nasty on offense. Denver’s defense is going to give them fits all game.
Denver’s O is run oriented going against a team that might just be a good defensive match up for them.
It looks like a low scoring game and you have to take Tebow in a low scoring game.

That's Omar from The Wire.
One of the most badass characters in the history of Crime Drama.
Latif- if you ever watch The Wire, you will laugh about/regret that comment. Guaranteed.
