Boy do you remember when the Lions fired oh whats his name ? Well anyways they gave the job to the young Martin Mayhew. A former Florida state DB ya know he played with Deion PRIMETIME Sanders. I remember greats like Jim Irsay sayin he was the best up and coming GM in the NFL. Every Lions fan cringed when they didn't look outside for a new leader. Kinda funny looking back all those years now. December 29, 2008 I remember it like yesterday. Martin Mayhews very first off season exciting times were they not ?
The year was 2009, January 15th I do belive. It was announced Mayhew had hired the Lions a brand new Head Coach by the name of Jim Schwartz. Defensive coordinator from Tennesee, Fantastic hire if I do say so myself. Came from the Billichick and Fisher coaching tree. He had his moments as a coach pasionate to say the least. When Mayhew and Schwartz decided their first NFL pick would be Matthew Stafford, I just knew we were in good hands. They took Pettigrew that year I remember it. A guy I knew online came up with the term Mayhew'd after they traded Roy Williams for that pick. It became something bigger than a joke it actually became a way of doing buisness. Lawrence Jackson, Alphonso Smith, Rob Sims all these guys were obtained with a serious Mayhew. Now round 2 that year they drafted Louis Delmas ended up being one of the best Safteys in the NFL. Oh it had to be Delmas and that kid Eric Berry at the time. Deandre Levy, Sammie Lee Hill who became a stud both came from that draft. Really had a great roster to build around right off the bat. Sure Matt had his problems early on but I wouldn't change it for the world now. I really feel sorry for this new kid at QB he's gonna be compared to number 9 the rest of his life but he'll be ok. Might not have a Megatron but we will be alright.
Now how about that 2010 draft class? You remember that one don't ya? Drafting high again but boy was it worth it. We got that human wrecking ball Ndamukong Suh. He owned the NFL right off the bat we will never see a rookie defensive tackle do that again. Once he calmed down a little and started to play smart after that suspension he really was one of the all time greats. Joe Greene, Warren Sapp, Ndamukong Suh. Wow we were lucky to have him in Detroit. They had that explosive back that year too, Jahvid Best he got beat up alot thats for sure but we never would have gotten that first ring without his big screen play with 75 seconds on the clock. Amari Spivey was always a solid player but seventh round was the steal. You know who, Willie Young is gonna go down as one of the greats from that team. Avril, Young, LoJack tremendous ends it almost wasn't fair they were mentored by Vanden Bosch. That was the class that really turned us into a contender against the rest of the NFL.
Seriously though. Can you explain to me how drafting Nick Fairley in 2011 was even legal? HAHAHA for a decade Suh and Fairley owned the NFL. You didn't have any say on the damage they did. It was actually disgusting to see what they did to Jay Cutler when they won their first divison title. Mikel Leshoure pounded the rock, He was so great you know he really did remind me of Steven Jackson the old Rams back. Use to truck linebackers and blow up Dbs. Was the opposite of everything Barry Sanders was. Never thought he'd break some of those records but it was great to see Mikel and Barry on the front page of the free press in a manly embrace after the game. We all know Calvin Johnson is the greatest Lions reciver ever but you know what? I'd argue Titus Young as possible number 2 no offense to Herman of course. The kid had hands like glue and wow was he fast. Once Nate Burleson became the 3rd reciver musta been about 2-3 years before he retired. Titus took off, when it came to Calvin, Titus, Grew, Best and Scheffler in the passing game it was pick your poison. That offense really took the NFL passing game to a different level. Between us and the Packers and probably the Saints no other team could keep up with us. The difference was our defense didn't give you time to throw the ball to get caught up.
So how do feel about next week? Gonna be a great day isn't it ? Seems like I have waited my whole life for this moment but it also signifys the end of it all. Pretty sad too when you think about it. I will admit though Matts gonna dawn that gold jacket really well come saturday. Kelly and the kids will be upfront and you just know someone is gonna make a remark about how he should cut his hair or my favorite is he should go by Matt makes him sound adult HAHA. I am sure Jim will give a passionate speech and Calvin is gonna be sitting behind him. If he don't cry hell I might. Seems like the label saviour was thrown around way to often. Damnit he was the saviour, without him I'm not sure what would have happen. He deserves this not just for him but for the team, he didn't break records or do a ton of TV but he was one of the best. To see him take his seat with Brady, The Mannings, Brees and those guys is just to exciting. The Lions were abismal not much hope until he came to town he brought the calm, smart, and consitency to the offense. While Suh, Fairley and Delmas brought the physical, power, and methodic play to the defense. Gonna be a big day for good old number 9 but it's gonna be a great day for the team around him and the millions of Lions fans that love him. Have to go down to the new ford field this year. Get a look a the new statue, I hear it looks like Stafford throwing it to Calvin on the otherside of the aisle way. Just like the last Superbowl victory they had.
Well I'll see ya around it's getting late.
HEY! Forward Down the Field my friend.....
