Lions Notes: Calvin Johnson Finishes Fourth Overall In Pro Bowl Voting
- For his 214-yard, two-touchdown game against the Raiders, Calvin Johnson was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
- Speaking of Johnson, he came in fourth in the fan voting for the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl. The final numbers were released today, and Johnson picked up 1,180,777 total votes. Only Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Drew Brees had more votes.
- Ndamukong Suh was passed by the 49ers' Justin Smith in the fan voting at defensive tackle.
- Matthew Stafford finished fourth in the fan voting among quarterbacks in the NFC. Jeff Backus was third at offensive tackle, Dominic Raiola came in fifth at center, Chris Houston finished fourth at cornerback and Jason Hanson was fifth at kicker. The fact that Cliff Avril didn't even crack the top five at defensive end is pretty ridiculous. (Via Dave Birkett)
- The full Pro Bowl rosters will be announced on NFL Network at 7 p.m. on Dec. 27. The fan voting comprises only one-third of the selection process, so the rosters won't be determined until votes by the players and coaches are counted.
- Excited Ndamukong Suh Photoshops? Excited Ndamukong Suh Photoshops.
- Lions linebacker Justin Durant wrote a column for the music section of the Detroit Metro Times yesterday.
- Todd McShay's first 2012 NFL mock draft is out. In it he has the Lions taking Virginia Tech running back David Wilson in the first round.
- On this day in 1997, Barry Sanders passed the 2,000 rushing yards mark in one season.
- The Bears are going to start Josh McCown at quarterback against the Packers on Sunday night. I think we can go ahead and chalk that one up as a loss for Chicago.
- Here's an amazing stat from Paula Pasche: Jason Hanson has never won a game against the Packers on the road.

LOL.
PS- Please don’t take a RB in round one. Please?

I think they have shown that they will take talent in the draft...

I agree that Cliff being left out is BS
Please remember tho they are being compaired to their counterparts on other teams and their performances this season. Not fellow team mates.
Defemsive Ends in the NFC are stacked!
Jason Babin, Jared Allen, Jason Pierre-Paul, Chris Long and Chris Clemons all have had statistically significant season this year, creating stiff pro bowl competition for Cliff Avril.
J. Babin (Phi) = 38 Tackles, 18 Sacks, 3 FF
J. Allen (Min) = 57 Tackles, 17.5 Sacks, 1 INT, 4 FF & Recovers
J. Pierre-Paul (NYG) = 76 Tackles, 13.5 Sacks, 2 FF
C. Long (StL) = 32 Tackles, 13 Sacks, 1 FF
C. Clemons (Sea) = 40 Tackles, 11 Sacks, 3 FF
C. Avril (Det) = 36 Tackles, 11 Sacks, 6 FF & 3 Recovers, 1 TD
…..and dont forget about Julius Peppers and John Abraham
These could be voters “reasons” why Cliff Avril isnt in the top 5 but I just don’t see any player that has had anywhere near the impact for his team (besides maybe Pierre-Paul) that Cliff Avril has had for the Lions.
Don't let my profile name fool you. My heart is, and always has been, with the Detroit Lions.
I see that Dave Birkett said on twitter that Allen, Babin, Peppers, Chris Long, and Osi are the top 5. Osi hasnt done much this season only playing 8 games thus far.

which one of those on that list is most likely see the playoffs??
In the past there has always been marginal players make the Pro Bowl mainly to due with the success of the team they play for. I say, why not this year, and why not Cliff?
Charles Aaron "Bubba" Smith 1945 - 2011 R.I.P.
On top of that, it is fan votes not coaches and players
This is not the placement of where they are at a probowl level. Just a fans take. On that note, if your a player and you get a bonus for a pro bowl spot. Lets say your in contention for that spot. Would you vote for youself ???
Are there no good O-linemen in the first round of the draft next year?
Since when do we need a running back?

I never claim to be a scout or anything
But I saw some Stanford games after I heard of him, and he’s an excellent run blocker. He just mauls everyone who he blocks, and opens up huge holes. His pass blocking is just as good as anyone we’ve got now as well. I’d love to have this guy.

Peter Konz, Center, Wisconsin would be a great pick for us but ...
The mock draft’s I’ve seen thus far have him taken well before the Lions selection. I doubt he’d drop low enough for us, unless we could trade up?
Lion fan in the Great Land!
One mock had him going to the Broncos one pick ahead
Any way you look at it, the first round pick has to be one of DeCastro, Konz, Martin, or that other center whose name escapes me.
I'm praying for a O-lineman as much as anyone
But you know Mayhew. We may get another D Tackle

Yeah I agree with that.
I know the NHL started handing out suspensions because the players were faking injuries to skip the all star game.
Staff finishes 4th in the voting for nfc qbs?
What’s a guy gotta do? There’s 3 guys playing better than him right now, they’re all elite & 1 is in the afc. He’ll probably still make it because Brees or Rodgers are likely to play in the big game but C’mon man!

You can probably attribute his poor showing in the voting
to his mid season, possibly glove induced, slump.
Those are the game most people are going to remember when they get started voting.

Even then I think it's just plain wrong
Eli is “elite” for 3 games then plays like trash for the next 2 and it’s not held against him. Romo’s slumps are legendary and neither Alex Smith nor Cam Newton should even be in the discussion. Guy has a broken finger and loses votes on that? You know that’s not right.

Drafting a running back????
If…and its a big if…McWrongs mock draft went the way he thinks…I sure would hope that Detroit drafted OT Mike Adams from OSU who he has drafted 2 players later. But thankfully he never gets his mock drafts even close to reality. But it sure is nice to see Detroit picking at the end of the round rather than the beginning of it.
If it aint broke, tear it apart and see why it was working so well.

I don't have any issues with the Pro Bowl voting.
Justin Smith is clearly the best DT or 3-4 DE in the NFL, and has my vote for Defensive Player of the year.
As far as Cliff goes, he has had a very good year, but there are numerous outstanding DEs in the NFC ahead of him: Babin and Cole from Philly, JPP of the Giants, Abraham of the Falcons, Jared Allen from Minny, Orakpo of Washington, Long of St. Louis, even Ray McDonald of the Niners had an outstanding year.
Just bad luck that he played very well in a year when a lot of DEs stood out. And Cliff would do a lot for himself if he cut out at least half of his penalties.
My 2011 Lions season prediction: 12 wins and 4 losses. I made this prediction the week after the New England preseason game. Well, so much for that prediction. 10 and 6 anyone?
I would not say that at all.
The franchise tag has been changed so that he would be paid less than under the old rules. It is now averaged over the last five years. [as per Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franchise_tag ]
Based on his abilities and performance, this year would seem to be the best time for the Lions to sign him to a long term contract. If he was one of the top five DEs he would cost a lot more. Right now he is a top twelve or so DE in the NFL, but trending up, so this would be a great time to lock him up!
