Time to Give Silva a Shot?

OK, Saturday the depleted Lions' secondary faces Vincent Jackson (6'5", 230 lbs, 8 TDs), Antonio Gates (6/4", 260, 6 TDs), and Malcolm Floyd (6'5", 225, 21 yards per catch, 3 TDs). Who WE got in matchups? Well, Delmas our secondary "quarterback" is out, Harris not practicing (concussion), Houston not at full speed, Berry trying to come back. I'm concerned because I watched the Bolts/Ravens game and it was PHILIP RIVERS all night.

Is it time to give Ricardo Silva a shot? Or will he and Spivey get in each other's way ballhawking rather than coordinating coverage? I know he's been practice fodder most of the year; I know he's a rookie. But Wendling stinks outside of Special Teams IMO, Silva's two inches taller and had 2 pre-season INTs for whatever chump change that's worth. We need speed and height as well as someone who can tackle (and Wendling can do that, at least). Anyone got any insight to make me feel better? I'm keeping the Tums near my snack tray, guys. This is NOT going to be a blowout and we need to keep it from being a SHOOTOUT for them.

Crank up the volume on 'em, people! False Start City like the Bears' first contest. Win another game ball!

I cringe at the though of either of them starting

I’d rather give Darren Sharper a temp job until Louis returns. I’m not high on Silva myself but Wendling literally mags me gag. Lets put Phonz at saftey! I know you are all laughing Profiler and his phonz…I’m dead serious he has to be better than either of these two. Just let him play the ball..It’s what he does.

Sounds like what Boise State did with Gerald Alexander.

He was their starting cornerback, he knew the two underclassmen were better then him…so, instead of benching him the coaches made him a safety. That way they had their best players on the field. Phonz has done a decent job tackling….I say why not.

But you are right he fucking blows.

I think he is better than CC Brown and that guy Blew. So, I think he does not blow. Perhaps he is less than average? I can deal with that. He is a backup after all.

I saw earlier in the week that he was signed by the Jaguars. I guess they thought they just didn’t suck quite enough lol

lmao.

Honestly, I think CC can be an effective player in the right scheme. Please notice, I did not say good. He is not afraid to put his nose into a runner and he is kinda ok in run support.

Wendling

I’m a big Wendling supporter. Huge. I love the guy. I like what he brings on special teams. I do not want him starting games, but I absolutely love what he brings as a backup. He will not make highlight reel stops on receivers, but what he does..practically all he does is not miss tackles. I don’t have any numbers, nor did I look at any stats, but everytime I see the guy in the game at safety, I do not see him miss tackles, ever. Isn’t that what you want out of a backup? You can’t have ball-hawking-bags of awesome 4 deep at every position, but what I want personally is solid guys who don’t make too many mistakes.
Oh yeah, give me guys like Wendling any day.

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

that's exactly what I've been on since Delmas has been out, why not Phonz at S

Then again I’m curious what Silva has done to progress. They seem to have a bit of similarities in play style with Silva having better tackling. Phonz has much better experience and likely flat out instincts tho which is what we need now.

The question is who plays nickle then? Get McD back? If that were to happen I would think it would be done by now.

I am hating this match up for us too

The chargers are something like 14-2 on the road in December with Rivers as their QB. They are coming in exceptionally hot in the passing game and their ground game looks to be coming alive too.

This game is going to be a real challenge. I am looking forward to it.

We made Carson Palmer look like Drew Brees last week

Houston fully practiced today though, right? So he should be good to go. Berry was practicing too. Wright it fine, so honestly, I’d like to see what the ball hawk Phonz can do at Safety. He’s not to hot in coverage, but he makes plays all the time…

I hope Gunther brings a little heat

We need to mix in a few more blitzes. At least give it a shot. Maybe we can rattle Rivers and it will help with our depleted secondary.

Otherwise I’m prayin for my boy Phonz to get some picks.

I'd sure like to see some blitzes..

But then that leaves someone like Berry covering Malcom Floyd one on one. I’m a big fan of Berry’s coverage ability, but he doesn’t make the necessary plays on the ball yet. I’m confident in whatever Gunther has planned though, he knows this is a huge game.

I'm losing confidence in what Gun plans week to week

Don’t get me wrong I love the guy as a DC but I am tired of running backs slicing us open. The Chargers have the backfield to do just that. He needs to make some adjustments in run defense.

There is only so much he can do

Our defense is predicated on pressure from the front 4. They sell out for the pass rush and other teams know this and use it against them on running plays.

It is built into the scheme. I am not sure there is all that much he really can do. You know me man, if there is something I thought the coaches could do, I would be saying something about it.

How does he adjust his defense better against the run? How does he do that when our secondary is a walking mash unit?

I just do not know.

Durant and LoJack Back to Full Participation in Practice

…so Blitzkreig could happen! Could use Flu or Fairley to step up if Williams can’t go, however. I know Durant can’t sack much due to the 9 Wide approach, but with pressure on Rivers and Vincent Jackson’s groin acting up, PLAYOFFS ARE DO-ABLE IN TWO DAYS ! Man, still can’t believe I just said that!

With their line troubles, what 2 recently signed/promoted, starters perhaps that disruption can help befuddle them. I’ll be making plenty of noise too, but that wont help 120miles away lol

Silva was my 2011 Randy Phillips Camp Stud Award winner.

Silva is a nice tackler and cover safety. He bites on run fakes harder than Spievey though. Nevertheless, I’d like to see him in a game to see just what, if any progress has been made.

Obviously, the Lions coaches like him enough to keep him around, but they don’t trust him enough yet to give him a shot.

Silva is a fine play maker who must learn (like Phonz) to stay on Gunther’s reservation.
