What a great win and what a great season for the Lions, myself and my 10 year old son (who is stuck with my and my family's legacy of Lion fandom - for better or for worse). A season for the ages.
I am originally from Windsor but have lived up near Toronto for the last 25 years. I have sat through years of pain and disappointment from the career ending injuries of Gary Danielson and Billy Sims - to the retirement of Barry. If it could go wrong - it always seemed the Lion's fate. In the 70's, every year the Vikings would dish out a season of disappointment. Then in the 80's, I remember all to well Eddie Murrays wide 40 yd kick against the 49ers to dash our hopes again. The team of the 90's turned out not to be the Lions but the Cowboys...........and the new Millenium brought us .............Millen, Yuck!!! So this season has been a real thrill ride with lots of moments to make up for all of the pain of the past.
It started out with the draft - all 7 rounds and then our visit to Lion’s training camp – what a great experience that was - autographs from Nate and Louis. Then we went to Canton to see the bust of Bobby Layne and Barry Sanders - on the same day the Lions visited the hallowed halls. Then we watched every game on TV – cheered and sighed with every play. Thrilling comebacks and disappointing setbacks. The Raider game was one for the ages – having watched the Lions for over 40 years, I can’t remember a more thrilling win – and then yesterday’s dominace was a great capper to the regular season.
What will the playoffs bring? Can the team bring us our 2nd playoff win in my lifetime? How about a trip to the NFC Championship game? Dare we dream of going to the Super Bowl? All bets are off now for this team – sky is the limit. Thanks Lions for such a great year for me, my son and all of the lonf sufferring Lions fans – a season for the ages.
And now it is XMAS morning – and my son has opened up his presents – and low and behold, a Matt Stafford Fathead for his Lions bedroom wall. He is sold on his Lion fandom and loves his new Fathead. A Lion fan for life.
Merry XMAS from Canada to all…………..and oh yeah, This is our Year!!!!
