Lions Notes: Joique Bell 'Very Excited' To Join Hometown Team

  • New Lions running back Joique Bell, who has agreed to a two-year deal, is excited to get a chance to play for his hometown team, and he is expecting to play on Sunday against the Packers.
  • Following the Lions' win over the Chargers, owner William Clay Ford was presented with a game ball.
  • Also following the win, Lions players took a victory lap around Ford Field and thanked fans for their support, much like they did in 2009 after a win over the Redskins ended their lengthy losing streak.
  • Sunday's game between the Lions and Packers will begin at 1 p.m. as originally scheduled. (Some games had their start times changed, including the de facto NFC East title game between the Giants and Cowboys, which was flexed to Sunday night.)
  • Speaking of that game, if the Cowboys win and clinch the NFC East title, the Lions will have played all five of the other teams in the playoffs for the NFC. They beat Dallas back in September and have lost games against the Packers, 49ers, Saints and Falcons.

Serious potential to be the #1 back

Dude, I have been on the Joique Bell band wagon and have been dumb founded wy we or any other team didn’t pick this guy up off the Saints PS earlier. He looked awesome in the pre-season for the Saints but has been burried under some talented backs eveywhere he has been since college (Drafted Buffalo- Lynch, Jackson, Spiller. Brief Philly- McCoy, Brown. Saints -Thomas, Ivory, Sproles, Ingram) His highlight real looks like a 5’ 11" 220 Barry Sanders. He has some moves for a big back and can move a pile. I am so stoked to see this kid get his shot!!!

I'm liking this...

with Bell and Dirty 30, I’m optimistic about our running game against the Packers this Sunday. I say sign Smith for 2012 too, while they still have the chance. I haven’t any doubt that he’ll be working hard to shake off his injury label. I’m sure many teams are regretting not giving him a chance, and definitely has exceeded expectations this season.

Not really the case ..

Even if the fines donated bear his name, it’s peanuts. If he was the most charitable player in ALL OF SPORTS, means he gave a lot lot more …

He donated a bunch to his college too .. and from what I feel, he doesn’t announce all his donations ..

I should hv checked link ...

It says 2.6 million .. All to his college .. 2 Mill to the Athletic dept and 600k to the Engg. division for scholarships … So those are what he had already announced last.

It’s a tidy sum ..

Besides tackle numbers.

Every other stat of his has been better than any other year he’s been in the NFL. Likely the reason he has a lower tackle rate is because he isn’t being solely relied on to tackle everything that make’s it through the line.PAY THE MAN!

Happy for William Clay Ford

Ford bought the Lions when I was 12; shortly after I began my love affair with the Detroit Lions. Through the years, I developed a hate for him, which began with his loyalty to Russ Thomas; some say out of his role in helping to cover up an incident of drunk driving by Ford, which would have caused great public shame to the Ford family.

He never seemed like an owner who really cared about winning, as he was for filling the seats, and I’ve held a major resentment toward him my whole adult life. He represented the ultimate jinx to the organization to me, and I believed that the Lions would NEVAH win another championship until he was six feet under. The Lions always seemed to be merely a toy to him, in my perception of reality, and that he’d be more upset about the water stains on his fine china. I had some hope when he appeared to be handing the reins over to Bill Jr., yet he didn’t really let go; requiring his stamp of approval on major club decisions.

I must be mellowing, as today I feel happy for him— reflecting on a shot of him all alone in his booth, and sensing he was proud of his Lions. I felt like he was a part of US for the first time, and that he was satisfied with how far the team has come this season. I want them to be a winner for him too now… I’ve never felt that way before. Hopefully, moving forward, he will take all the necessary action to continue building a team we can all be proud of together… a SuperBowl winner within the next couple of years. I will be among those, who mingled in with my tears of joy at the parade, there will be one for William Clay Ford in that stream and part of that lump in my throat.. Yes, I think he deserves that now. Just as Art Rooney went through decades of a study in futility with the Steelers, before they became an elite team, and a standard for excellence,Clay Ford’s journey as a laughing stock has been just as brutal. Rooney lived long enough to see it all turned around, and I hope the same happens for Ford.

Gee

You said it all in that statement. My love affair started with Billy Sims and I have always felt the same way about Ford. I finally think he has found some kind of urgency with wanting a SB Title before he dies, or gets pushed aside. Part of me feels he is going to go out like Al Davis, not giving up the control until he is under ground.

You bastages

I wanted Joique Bell in the worst way (well, not the worst way, actually) ever since he came out of college…and finally he winds up with my Saints. I figured he’d have a sterling preseason next year and make the active roster and everything would be peachy. Then you guys get in the act.

Seriously, I think your running back problems may be finished. Bell is solid in every way. Just make sure you beat the Pack and capture the 5th seed, so he doesn’t have to come back to the Dome and play against the Saints, because that would make me sad.

Premature speaking here

When our Lions come back to the Dome, your going to see a different outcome! Staff’s hand is healthy now and we will have our secondery all back and playing together. Add to it Durrant can cover a certain TE in N.O. it’s going to be fun! Now don’t take this the wrong way, but sure does seem that the Saints and Packers get a ton of flags thrown in their favor. Last night I saw the Falcons get flagged for hitting a defenceless WR, and then later in the game White gets lit up before he can even come close to securing the ball and NO FLAG. The Saints and Packers for some reason are allowed to play a different game then the rest of the teams.

I don’t think there are any trends at all in officiating. I think it’s all random. The zebras might as well keep flipping the coin throughout the game. I can’t even tell what the rules are anymore.

And if we meet in the playoffs, I hope it’s for the NFC Championship, and not in the divisional round. Could happen.

Couldn't agree anymore than with that statement.

You watch any game and the ref’s call a flag on 1 player and you see the exact same play later in the game and no flag. I wish the ref’s would call the games all the same. And it would have to be the Championship game which could happen, I mean we should handle GB this week with them not having anything to play for. I am still hoping that Brees and the Saints win the #2 and get the week off, in recent years those weeks off have not been so nice to the home teams. Even if it gives Rogers and Brees a lousy quarter of rust to shake off, that may be all a team needs to get the upper hand on them.

How many lumps you want Doc?

by davis0169 on Dec 27, 2011 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

As a Saints fan I can see why you would say the officiating is random

The league loves you guys. Ive watched a lot of Saints games through the years and must say you guys get a pretty fair treatment.

I would encourage you to watch a season of Lions football with a knowledgeable Lions fan, if you are ever interested in seeing what the refs can do to a game.

Now, Ive never been one to ever say we lost anything because of the refs. Thats about as lame an excuse as can be made. However, it is what it is and we get some of the worst officiating, year in, decade out, that occurs in the league.

The last two games, they’ve pretty basically called nothing…either way. During our losing run in the middle of the season they were calling everything…and a bunch that didnt happen just to make up for what they might have missed in some other game. We lost those games because we played poorly but it gets magnified by the refs piling on

Hey Yps, hows it going?

Are you talking about phantom Chop Blocks; offencive pass-inter; DB’s for other teams that can mug WR’s down field and get no call? Or Woodson punching a Lions WR and get no flag or ejection? I wont talk about the lack of holding calls on Avril and KVB because those are so hit and miss that you just let those go. This year is the first year I have had the NFL Ticket on Direct TV and got to watch any game I wanted to, and I’m telling you the “Darling Teams” of the NFL get away with murder. The Patriots and Packers get more calls for them than any team in the league, the Saints/Ravens and G-men get a lot of calls for them as well.Don’t even get me started with what Revis Island gets away with on most plays. Watching last nights game I was taken back when the ref’s didn’t call the person foul against the Falcons when Brees was taken down by the shoulder then the Falcons line-man’s arm/hand went around his helmet. But the game was already over by that point.

Thank you

I’m right there with you. I followed him after the combine and couldn’t understand why the Lions didn’t draft him with a late pick then. His 40 speed kills him but he runs alot faster on the field than on the track. You guys are stacked at RB but he may end up a better back than Ingram so great steal for us:)

I am glad the lions finally made a move for Bell. Earlier in the season I couldn’t understand why they didn’t poach either him or Saine off of PS. He isn’t a home run threat but he should be able to grind out some tough carries in January.

How much does Backus make?

I think Staff and Megatron would take less to get a guy of Long’s status to come here and play as well. Imagine Long next to Sims, Backus slides to RT and we can all say bye bye to Gos. When did Rayola become a decent C? This year he has played better than any year I can ever remember him playing. He is almost if not playing at a PB level. And that pains me to say since he is no longer the weak link on the O-line; Thanks Gos.

You're one of the few

that think Dom is playing well this year. I think he’s easily the weakest link on the line this year. Against Oakland he literally got pushed into our RB’s on multiple occasions to stop the run completely. I would absolutely love to draft a center this year and somehow mayhew the Dolphins for Jake Long. Suddenly, our line becomes a strength for our team.

Raiola's improved, for sure.

..it’s like him & backus actually have played harder for Stafford this year. Maybe guilt got to them, maybe the concept of a Lions season just being 16 games of futility has been scrubbed out of their minds. I’m not sure.

But they’re markedly better than they were. As a fan I’m demanding O-line improvements as soon as the off-season begins, but I’m definitely not gonna look past what Raiola and Backus have brought to the table this season.

The problem isn't Dom

All things considered, the center position doesn’t need upgrading, the issue is his age. I would definitely spend the 1st pick for Long with a (conditional?) 3rd pick, draft a C/G to groom behind Dom and Peterman, slide Backus over to the right side, get rid of Gos, and work on drafting/signing Backus’s eventual replacement. After that I will have 0 qualms with our line

VERY happy that the Lions picked up Joique Bell!

This is a guy that I have been watching for the Lions to pick up all year. When LeShoure went down in the preseason it opened a slot in our running back corps that I felt Bell could fill very nicely. He is a hometown kid with a lot of great potential, but he has been in the shadow of other bigger names his entire career so far.

I really think this kid will be a great complement to the running backs we already have. He has some size and power, but he also has some moves and a quick first step. He is a good blocker when he picks up blitzes as well. I like him a lot and I am thrilled that the Lions finally got him in here. I think he is going to surprise some people. It might be bad news for Kieland WIlliams though.

I also want to go on record as officially supporting the “Legatron” nickname for Jason Hanson.

an intresting thought

4 out of 5 loses we have are against playoff teams and the other 1 was against another (possible) playoff team. The main reason why they didn’t make it was cuz Cutler and Forte went down for the season.
And correct me if I am wrong but all 5 Loses were cause we beat ourselves. Either due to penalties or turnovers.. I truly can’t recall any team actually going out and beating us except for maybe 1 (49ers)
So we play like we have LATELY I don’t think anyone could stop us!!

Niners and Falcons were totally winnable. They just blew it.

I don’t know if they really showed up @Chi, that was just horrific… they completely melted down vs. GB.

For the most part, they have shown they have the talent to win every game, it’s just been a matter of penalties and bad decisions that have cost them wins this season.
