AP 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year... No Love for Suh.

Troy Polamalu was named AP Defensive Player over Clay Matthews also recieving votes were Julius Peppers (6), Brian Urlacher (4), Ed Reed (1) and Haloti Ngata (1). Two players receiving no votes were James Harrison and Cameron Wake, yup thats right Ndamukong Suh wasn't even on the list.

Star-divide

Troy Polamalu 14 games, 63 tackles, 7 ints and a sack.

Clay Matthews 15 games, 60 tackles, 2 ff and 11 sacks.

Brian Urlacher 16 games, 126 tackles, 2 ff and 4 sacks.

Julius Peppers 16 games, 54 tackles, 3 ff and 8 sacks.

Ed Reed 10 games, 37 tackles and 8 ints.

Haloti Ngata 16 games, 63 tackles and 6 sacks.

James Harrison 16 games, 100 tackles, 6 ff and 11 sacks.

Cameron Wake 16 games, 57 tackles, 3 ff and 14 sacks.

Ndamukong Suh 16 games, 66 tackles, 1 ff, 10 sacks, 1 int and a TD.

Where is the love for Suh, maybe it was b/c he was a rookie? Nope, Cameron Wake is on the list. Maybe b/c he was a DT? Nope, Haloti Ngata is on the list as well. The AP Defensive Player Award is now a joke to me and is as worthless as the Pro Bowl, at this point i am speechless and truely at a lost for words.

Never expected Suh to be on this list

Rookies rarely if ever are. I expect defensive rookie of the year how ever is lock stock and barrel.

He owns that DROY.

But why the hell is Wake on the list and not Suh.

I don't think "officially" he was

I watched NFL net last night when they announced the award I don’t recall seeing Suh or Wake mentioned.

While Ndamukong Suh

Had a remarkably good year, even for a non-rookie, it’s a bit ridiculous to claim he deserved the award over Troy or Clay. Yeah, he probably deserved at least a vote, or at least to be considered, he did lead his position and all.

That said, they got the right #1 and #2 right. There’s being a fan and there’s being silly.

Mavyrk

You honestly believe yourself. True i am a fan of Suh but who isn’t besides the QB’s in the North, but seriously Suh matches up statisically with both Troy and Clay and did it from the DT position. Not only should he have been on the list but should’ve had an oppurtunity to win it.

I agree entirely.

He had better seasons than Peppers, Urlacher, Haloti Ngata, and Cameron Wake. And it boils my blood that he didn’t enter into consideration.

However, he was also in a learning year. He was slightly ineffectual against the run as he learned his position in the beginning of the year, and that’s a distinction guys like Troy Polamalu (you know, the guy that very well could go down as #1 of his positional ranking, all time, if he retired today?) and Clay Matthews (who’s been doing this for a year longer, which makes a difference) don’t have.

Both of their teams made the playoffs — with distinctly strong defenses overall, to boot.

I’m a huge, huge Suh fan. I scour the internet for Ndamukong Suh news daily (no kidding), I watch every interview (with pants on), I look at his highlights (without), and I’m totally in love with the bro (no homo.)

But come on. He’s not the DPOY.

But he deserves to be in the discussion. That’s definitely the biggest snub in this whole debate, not Clay Matthews losing to Troy by some ridiculously slim margin.

by Mavyrk on Feb 1, 2011 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

I can agree to disagree

basically of course he would have a few bump’s bruises in the beginning its a huge step from college to the NFL. But he handled with grace and bounced back like a golf ball shot onto concrete, he played in all 16 games Troy 10 and Clay 15 and dominated his position. The AP don’t know shit and the award is a mockery to football…

It's possible.

That rookies are exempted from POY awards because they have their own award, and having a rookie (albeit an auspicious occasion) win two would kind of dilute the award week.

A distinct probability.

Has any rookie run it since?

Has any rookie gotten votes since, or been in the consideration since?

A lot can change in 22 years, it’s quite possible they’ve changed the awards.

by Mavyrk on Feb 2, 2011 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

nope. hes the only one.

i couldnt find any info on the award changing either. im wondering how much reputation plays into it. Suh should have been in that top tier, and same with harrison, both have a reputation and neither got any votes.

by haywood on Feb 2, 2011 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

My guess is

They no longer nominate rookies.

I mean, to be fair, Suh didn’t have the kind of rookie season that screams “HE NEEDS TO BE DPOY” either.

kinda like the best defensive player on a marginal defense, or maybe he’s a good player on good defensives like the top two finalist that are also in the Super Bowl…hummm and what the fuck did Clay do that was so outstanding?

Suh gets rob’d and winning the DROY doesn’t make up for it either.

by The Profiler on Feb 1, 2011 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

So were a lot of people, right up until Troy won it.

Clay really was a beast this year. He started out the year on fire, and then the players around him started dropping like flies and he injured his shin and slowed down a bit. But he’s been healthy recently and you’ve seen what he’s done in the playoffs.

The Packers don’t really have all that many pass-rushers, and most of the ones they did have ended up on IR. Nick Barnett and Brad Jones both missed most of the year, so Clay ended up having an UDFA in Zombo anda street FA in Walden starting across from him. Cullen Jenkins was in and out of the line-up all year. Clay was the one guy every team focused on shutting down this year, mostly because the defense didn’t have very many weapons beside him.

In the same way Charles Woodson made the defense great last year, Clay Matthews was the centerpiece of one of the best defenses in the league this year, in only his second season.

Suh definitely deserved to be mentioned at least. He was dominant as a rookie. I think the Lion’s poor defense and the team’s poor record in general hurt his case a lot.

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

And go Shawn Watson and Barney Cotton! Seriously, leave Lincoln. Now.

by Omaha Sun on Feb 2, 2011 1:59 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

I wouldn’t be so upset if he was at least mentioned. He only dominanted his position as a rookie, Suh didn’t have the star power around him either. Detroit lost KVB for the year and had a banged up LB in Levy and a banged up S in Delmas, still Suh was doubled team and even tripled team at times and still posted impressive numbers for a rookie and even a all pro at his position.

James Harrison

To be quite honest, Harrison’s numbers are very comparable to Polamolu and Matthews. I’d even argue Harrison’s numbers are a bit better. Polamolu and Matthews were making highlight reels though. Harrison only made the highlights when he was getting fined for his hits.

james harrison

did have a better year 40 more tackles than either one 4 more turnovers than mathews 1 less than troy 10 more sacks than troy same amount of sacks than clay so lets say tackles are 1 point turnovers are 10 and sacks are 5 then harrisons total score would be 215 troy’s score would be 138 and mathews would be 135 I would say thats a huge difference between stats anyways but I know they have to factor in the model citizen and the picture perfect " Player of the year" they can’t be the one who’s getting fined 300,000 a year and the poster child of illegal hits even if he had 60 more " ILLEGAL HITS" than the next closest person

I don't think it really works that way.

Assigning arbitrary values to certain stats isn’t an objective way of evaluating a player. Also consider the situations of the players. Troy and Harrison both have another DPOY candidate playing with them as well as a few other weapons. GB has a lot of talented players on the defense, but most of the other pass-rushers were hurt. It is a lot easier to focus on Clay when he doesn’t have Woodley rushing from the other side. I personally think Troy is the key to their defense, and their record with and without him back that opinion up.

thats not how it works but I was jut saying maybe that he got over looked because he gets fined and hes the poster child for illegal hits and they dont want him to be the D player of the year. But dont you think having the other DPOY on your team makes your job a little easier?

I am sorry

Suh should have been mentioned in the race but to say he should have won is flat out being a homer.

He was weak against the run early in the season, improved in that area as the season wore on but his sacks started to take a hit when his run support started to improve. He had a great year no doubt but he was not DPOY.

Honestly, on the list 3 of the guys could have won and it would have been a good pick. There is so much more that goes into being a great D player than stats alone. That makes picking a DPOY so much more difficult to predict than OPOY.

Suh has a lot of years to leave his mark on the NFL. Plenty of time to be in the discussions for this and many other awards. He would be the first to admit he should have and could have played much better this year. If his passion and drive for the game stays high like it seems to be now, he will win his fair share of awards. Right now, this season, he does not rate up there with the best D players in the league.

That is just fine by me. That tells me he has a lot of room to mature as a player and one day will bring something the Lions have never had at DT. A total beast unrivaled in the rest of the league, someday.

weak against the run?

i saw this comment earlier but i don’t understand. i didn’t notice this in the games.

it wasn’t just the numbers (which were spectacular), he was dominating guys all year. i would not swap Suh for any other defensive player in the NFL for this year on this defense.

guys like Suh are very very rare. there just aren’t that many guys on the planet with that build that possess that kind of quickness and power and athleticism. to routinely beat or stymie two 300lb+ giants and blow up those short yardage plays is just amazing. this season was a treat—he is one of the most beautiful football players i have ever watched in the NFL. he seems to dominate everyone on the field. he should have been very strongly considered for DPOY.

by x$pcents IV on Feb 3, 2011 1:03 AM EST up reply actions

Weak against the run

In the brain, not physically. He doesn’t possess the experience to really blow up an NFL running play with any regularity yet.

by Mavyrk on Feb 3, 2011 1:24 AM EST up reply actions

He was weak against the run for at least the first 1/2 of the season

Teams identified his tenacity and drive to slaughter the QB and used it against him in the running game. Often using a pulling guard/tackle to “blindside” him out of the play.

Let me be clear, I would not trade him for 99% of the league. He is a monster and will only get better but he was clearly weak against the run early in the season and it was a result of inexperience and his single minded desire to find the QB in the backfield.

Like I said before, he learned (watching game film I am sure) what teams where doing against him and how the professional game is far more complex than the college game. The kid is an intelligent cat. He will learn and get better allowing him be more dominate in both the run stopping and pass rushing game at the same time.

That is what Suh said was the most difficult transition for him.

Studying game film. He didn’t have to do that nearly as much in college because he could just physically dominate. He said his DL buddies, and KVB in particular, have really helped him in that area.
