I wanna talk about a guy who has peaked my intrest. From the Miami Hurricanes cornerback Brandon Harris. Mike Mayock ranks him as the #3 corner in the 2011 draft. At 5'11 and 195 LBS Brandon Harris is a tough minded kid with a never give up attitude. Throwin into the fire early as a freshman had games that were embarassing and would destroy the confidence of alot of players in that position. Not Harris though he came back every week and learned from his experince. It did not take long for Harris to show he was something special either.Just a year later he led the ACC in passes defended per contest and tied for second nationally with 15 pass break-ups. His junior campaign in 2010 has been equally successful.
Harris has the right attitude, but he has the skills to play at the next level too. He has a quick first step and amazing overall speed. Very few players at any level will blow by him. For a player who relies on speed, Harris is surprisingly tough and the opposition cannot pick on him anymore or Harris will make them pay.
His career stats at Miami are solid with 129 tackles, 3 forced fumbles and 4 interceptions. He also had 2 picks vs Notre Dame in their final bowl game. In his final year he was not targted much by QBs. Harris still has room to improver his game but has all the tools to be a starting NFL cornerback. Looking at Walterfootball.com prospect rankings Brandon Harris ranks 3rd behind Prince A. and Jimmy Smith. Saying this..
Harris is a baller - period. On tape, he produces and plays with the swagger and confidence you want to see out of a cornerback. He's a missle in run support and shows the ability to take on a block. In coverage, receivers really struggle to separate and offensive coordinators have stopped calling plays his way this season.
Brandon Harris broke up a whopping 15 passes last year and also had six TFL.
Harris 40 time projects around 4.41 they have Harris falling to the Seahawks at 25 but don't rule out the Lions taking him before that. Personally I don't think he will last that long. I expect a huge combine from Harris putting him in the mid to low teens in the draft. Brandon Harris weakness is zone coverage he need to improve on his quickness to react. When it comes to man to man coverage though Harris best assests show with his abillity to mirror recivers. He has very fluid movement with good speed. He plays the ball well and uses good instincts to get it at it's highest point. Has good burst in explosiveness whe closing in on a tackle or helping in run support. Has pretty good body control, keeps feet under him when changing directions or turning around in coverage. Is a hard worker with a good motor and passion for the game, shows willingness to learn and improve. Plays physical for his body type he is not in any way afraid to put his body into bigger recivers and runners. He has proven to be very durable not missing any gametime due to injurys.
Now for the negatives, Harris needs to improve is tackle technique he has been knowin to miss one on one in space. He needs to do a better job of breaking down in space and improving his Zone cover skills. As a junior Harris did not put up great numbers. Alot of which was due to QBs not throwing his direction. He still put up a team high of 10 broke up passes.
I think Brandon Harris fills a need for the Lions and fits their scheme very well with his great Man to Man cover abillitys. He is a very coachable guy with a great attitude and a need to suceed. If he climbs the boards like I expect him to I think Harris will be a great pick for the Lions. He is a little more raw than Prince and Peterson but there is no reason to belive he won't be an outstanding NFL cornerback.
