Detroit Lions Team Breakdown, Mock Draft and FA.

I have seen more than my share of mock drafts this year so i thought i'd do my own. At this point it is uncertain were these players will actually fall in the draft so from my point of view here's my mock. I will also look at some FA that may or may not be in Detroit this season...

Star-divide

1st Round: DB  Brandon Harris  5'11 195 lbs Miami

2nd Round: ILB  Casey Matthews  6'1 245 lbs Oregon

3rd Round: WR  Terrance Toliver  6'2 215 lbs LSU

4th Round: OT  James Carpenter  6'5 313 lbs Alabama

5th Round: OC  Ryan Pugh  6'4 300 lbs Auburn

7th Round: CB/S  Chris Culliver  6'1 201 lbs South Carolina

UDFA: RB  Brandon Saine  6'1 225 lbs Ohio St.

How aggressive will Detroit be in this years FA market, there are alot of big names out there but will the Lions go after them or stay under the radar adding quility depth. At this point in time it looks like the draft willl be held before FA and Schwartz could look to shore up the holes the best he can through the draft.

Bryant Johnson has done nothing to claim his rights to be apart of the team and though young Derrick Williams seems to be following in his footsteps in Detroit. Does that mean that Toliver will come in and be our savior as the #3 WR no, but it does give us a new look and a fresh start and with a little help from CJ and Nate could be the best solution.

Kevin Smith, Jerome Felton, Aaron Brown and Maurice Morris make up the depth behind Jahvid Best. Smith could be productive if he could stay healthy and Morris has done a nice job filling in the last two years. Brown and Felton are still young, Felton has made it known that he's not happy with his role in Detroit and Brown will flash moments of greatness with his speed but then blow an assignment with a bone headed mistake. I like Brandon Saine he is pretty much all four in one, can run inside with power and outside with good speed , can block and has good hands coming out the backfield.

Dominic Raiola and Stephen Peterman, I like Peterman when he is healthy problem is we havent seen him healthy long enough to really want him. Raiola what can i say pound for pound is a fair pass blocker and a bad run blocker. The depth behind them belongs on a practice squad in the CFL, I really wanted John Moffitt as did alot you here at POD did. I don't see Moffitt making it to us in the third and might not make it out the second which brings me to James Carpenter. I didn't know a whole lot about him until the senior bowl where he was pretty good at both guard and tackle but really stood out to me at guard. Ryan Pugh, could say positive things as well as negative but that goes for every player in the draft i think that reguardless of Raiola and Peterman's future in Detroit both Carpenter and Pugh are better than the depth players we have.

Alphonso Smith, Paul Pratt, Aaron Berry, Tye Hill, Jack Williams and Prince Miller our the corners, Phonz is hands down the best we have on the team and after last year i see alot of promise in the kid. I think that he will come back stronger and more comfortable in Gun's scheme, is he the answer for the shutdown corner we longed for , no. He is playmaker and a ball hawk from hell, he will be a very good CB in this league and i think on his way to the pro bowl in 2012. Hill a former first round pick didnt wow me but didnt disappoint either, Berry was a UDFA last year and looks to have alot of promise, the same can be said about Pratt. Dont know much about Miller and Williams is more than likely on his way out. Brandon Harris is flatout the type of CB Schwartz and Co. are looking for good speed, quick, nice hip movement and is very aggressive.

DeAndre Levy, Ashlee Palmer, Zack Follett and Caleb Campbell make up the LB Corp. with all of them starting at some point except Campbell it makes a very intresting group. I am unsure on Follett's return but he will be demoted back to special teams and could rotate in at times, Campbell your guess is as good as mine. Palmer, i truely believe reguardless of who we take in the draft (Ayers, Foster, Matthews, etc) they will have to take the job from him. He ended up taking the job from JP which isn't saying much considering how he played but still a big boost for a UDFA on his second team trying to prove himself. Levy will be the starter in the middle, he had a decent year and played with a groin injury. I think that he is finally at a comfort in the middle although still learning i look for him to bounce back and lead the LB, i think he hits the film room hard as well as the weight room. I took Matthews with the second round pick b/c i feel he continues to improve his stock with every chance given, he had a nice senior bowl even thought the stats werent there. I think he out played Foster who i thought would fall to us in the second, also Ayers stock is on the decline although i don't think he will make it out of the first and diffently not to us at pick 44. I had to roll the dice with Matthews not only was he on Schwartz list but on most of our draft wish list, he wont make it out of the second round and may not make it to us in the second.

Louis Delmas, Amari Spievey and Randy Phillips make up the last line of defense in Detroit. Phillips come out the gate swinging and then vanished from the line up last year, i still like what i see in him and think he is better depth than CC Brown. Spievey is another young talent on this defense with alot of promise, he was drafted as a CB but that didn't workout so Schwartz moved him to S were Brown won the starting job. Brown later rendered the job back to Spievey who wasn't that impressive in the beginning but in the end looked like he may have a clue of how to play S in the NFL. You would expect a third round pick to be a starter at some point and look decent the way Schwartz and Co. have been drafting but Spievey has never played S so its all new to the kid who just learned to play CB in college. Spievey has said that he really plans to hit the film room and weight room hard this off season, he might be there now. Delmas needs no praise around here and although he had a quite year he was good, he was going through groin injury like Levy. I like Chris Culliver in the seventh he can play both CB and S so would add depth to both and should be a nice addition to the special teams.

I would like to see Schwartz and Inc. resign Bobby Carpenter, Chris Houston, Cliff Avril, Turk McBride, Andre Fluellen, Corey Hilliard, John Wendling and Dave Rayner. I would love to throw names around as far as FA go but i just cant see Detroit making a big splash like i orginally thought in free agency this year. Manny Lawson is one name that comes to mind, i also think Carlos Rogers could land in Detroit, as much as i hate to say it Albert Haynesworth could find himself in Allen Park, just a few names for ya... David Baas, Eric Wright, Jacoby Jones, Trent Edwards, Matt Leinart and Desmond Bishop.

Im not too wild about this...

Haynesworth is an absolute no. Harris is okay in the first, just depends who we have to choose from. However, I don’t like Matthews that early and would rather grab another OL or defensive player in the 3rd instead of a WR.

by Colin_Fitz on Feb 2, 2011 4:54 PM EST reply actions

Not a Haynesworth Fan Myself...

doesn’t mean that Schwartz will pass him up being that cheap and all. Were all entittled to our own opinion, Matthews wont make it out the second round and the WR i see being the BPA in the third and it would address a need.

Just stop at B.Harris

I like him and ok with that pick.

Mathews is getting way too much hype because of his name. No way he should be taken in the second!

Agreed

I would look at him in the 4th or 5th, but I’d rather grab Bruce Carter in the 2nd if we go with a LB

You look for Matthew in the 4th or 5th ...

the only Matthews you’ll find is Cliff Matthews.

Have you not watched the kid play...

He showed his ass in the BCS game against the best the NCAA had to offer and he looked good in the senior bowl, the kids stock is climbing and i hardly doubt that has to do with his name.

But it does have to do with his name

it just so happens that every one with the last name Matthews is crazy good on the field. I mean Clay was a frickin walk on at USC and he was so close to the Def player of the year, oh and his dad and uncle wear pretty good too.

It also makes me laugh when people say “That is too soon to pick him” But every year when they redo the draft players that were picked in the second round or late first round are always moved up. Levy was a third rd pick and when a lot of the experts redid the draft he was a projected first round pick. That is where great scouting comes into play. Just ask the Red Wings.

by lionfan4life on Feb 2, 2011 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

So your right his name has something to do with it...

but he is the one out there performing on the big stage and doing a hell of a job. I had him maybe third round but the kid won’t stop producing when it comes game time, would love to steal him in the 3rd but i don’t think it will happen. Plus he has something Schwartz likes besides the headlines twice a year reading the Matthew brother met again.

More times than not

These kids who have had fathers and uncles ect.. that played pro obviously have an advantage and are usually well versed in the game and are prepared for the pro game because of the advise and instruction they get. Plus there is more than likely some sort of drive and determination for bragging rights in the family. You see it over and over. Look at Barry Sanders kid. He’s a human highlight reel..

1st CB Brandon Harris his tackling skills scare me

2nd LB Casey Matthews way to soon

3rd WR Terrance Toliver we dont need a 3rd round WR.. we run a 2 TE set

4th OT James Carpenter we have 3 good project OTs allredey why get a 4th?

5th OC Ryan Pugh you could argue we need a better back up OC.. but there should be better valeu some where

7th S Chris Culliver anything can happen in the 7th.. i think we will go with a QB though

Not sure where the

“tackling skills scare me” come from. I’ve only seen the 3 game videos posted for Harris, but none of them reveal poor tackling and none of the scouting reports I’ve seen say that either – just that it’s an area he needs to improve on…(like every other corner in the draft not named Peterson or Amukamara)

A 3rd WR would be very good for us because Linney & Staff like using 3 WR sets quite often actually. Go back and look at tape (yes, we put Scheffler in the slot a bit- but a good reason for that was the complete lack of a true WR in those games…)

det32 look at you kid with all the caps and peroids and such.

You actually had me woundering if someone else was using your profile pic lol. I know your not happy with a mock that doesnt have Ayers as the first round pick but i have seen Ayers dropping on alot of boards so Detroit may even move up in the second to grap him.

Toliver is going to be worth the 75th pick i just hope he makes it that far, your right Detroit does like a 2 TE set but think that they would love to have three wide outs on the field alot more if they had a #3.

Carpenter is a tackle but he can play at any position on the line, i like Moffitt but don’t think he will make it to us at 75 and i would hate to move up to get him when we can get the same quility in a kid like James in the 4th.

Eric Wright

seems like he’d be a good fit for us in FA. I don’t know that Cleveland will let him get away, but he’s good at mirroring receivers. With our pass rush, I think he’d have a nice time and he’s quite young (just about to reach his prime)…

RA

by rames on Feb 2, 2011 6:46 PM EST reply actions

He may also come on the cheap

he was only paid $550,000 last year. While he’s certainly going to be looking for more than that, compared to Jonathan Joseph or even Carlos Rogers; he might be notably cheaper…

He had a rough year last year, but it may not be as bad as it first appears. He lost the starting job to Haden after he suffered a knee injury. While he gave up a few touchdowns in the first half of the season, he also registers a pass def in each of the first 8 games. He then injured his knee and tried to play on it right away to hold on the starting LCB position. Haden ended up winning it, as he’s an awesome CB and Wright was then playing on a bum knee (due to not giving it any chance to heal). The Browns proceeded with Wright as the nickel and then put him on IR as it was clear his knee needed to be rested…

Again, he wasn’t consistent like he was in 2009, when he played like a true #1 CB. Because of the injury and Haden – I would certainly offer decent (2 or 3 year) contract to him if I were Mayhew and didn’t feel like I could come up with the money for Asomoghua or Joseph…

RA

by rames on Feb 2, 2011 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

He won’t come that cheap, losing your job to Haden is nothing to be ashamed of, and if the Browns don’t want to keep him I’d welcome him to Detroit. What did he do to get knocked down a few rounds in the draft??? that always worries me to.

by msivits on Feb 2, 2011 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

?

He was the 53rd pick. And more importantly than the draft, in 2008 and 2009, he established himself as a very solid starter, often covering the best WRs and excelling in man coverage. His inconsistency concerns me, but he’s also still young and the Browns were not exactly lights out on the pass rush side of the equation…you can only leave a press man cover corner on an island for so long unless you’re Revis…

I should add

that Richard Marshall doesn’t appear like he’s going to be back with the Panthers and he fits what we like here in Detroit: he’s aggressive and strong in run support. He also hasn’t missed a game in his 5 seasons and while he’s not a shutdown corner, he’s got very solid ball skills and is simply a reliable starter. If Mayhew feels Houston and/or Smith will continue to improve, Marshall could be the answer to make our secondary consistently good (not great, but we might not absolutely need a great secondary with a lights out front 7…)

RA

by rames on Feb 2, 2011 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

Both Wright and Marshall had terrible years covering WRs.

From visits to the Browns and Panther sites, there are a lot of fans there who would like to see both those guys gone.

I would rather not sign guys who can’t cover very well. I’d give up run support ability for a better cover guy anyday.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 3, 2011 7:58 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with you whole heartedly

given the QBs & WRs we face. Unfortunately, I’m trying to project what Mayhew might do. He seems to like picking up rejects with real potential/talent… I’d agree that Marshall probably isn’t going to get any better in his man coverage and that he’s not the answer for the #1 position (that’s why I mentioned if Mayhew felt Smith or Houston are improving substantially…then a solid #2 could help a lot). Wright did struggle this year in coverage, but he was very good in the past, kind of like a Cromartie case (where he was awesome one year and then fell off the next…). I do think it’s the case that Wright could be better (more consistent) in man coverage – that’s what he excels at – and with our line, I think he’d play better than he did last year. I’m just not sure if Mayhew will put the money into the CB position this year and Schwartz didn’t have high priced CBs in Tenn either…

RA

by rames on Feb 3, 2011 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

also, not to pretend to know more than their fans

but how did Marshall have such a terrible time covering when they were ranked 11th against the pass(much better even in QB rating) and Gamble missed 4 games and played hurt in a couple others? I didn’t watch them, so I’m not pretending to know, just wondering.

RA

by rames on Feb 3, 2011 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

Munnerlyn had a very good season for them [he filled in for Gamble].

And he was their nickel guy too. Martin and Godfrey were pretty solid at Safety for them too. Their LBs were very good. Connor, Anderson, and Beason were excellent in coverage. Especially the last two [the OLBs].

Their defence was not that bad. It sounds like Marshall is one of their weak links. He did play every game and almost every snap too.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 3, 2011 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

interesting

guess Marshalls bark for more money and a long-term contract doesn’t make a ton of sense eh.

I am for bringing Marshall in but really gave up on the ideal thinking that Carolina wouldn’t let him go. I like Houston and have been supporting the kid from day one but give me Marshall over Houston.

I'm sick of people bashing Fat Albert

If Schwartz thinks he can play, he’ll make a move on him, sad fact is when he wants to he’s scary good. As good or better than Suh. NOW JUST STOP, I know the 1st thing out of haters mouths will be “when he wants to” I’m pretty sure Albert will know what’s expected from him playing with Schwartz. Schwartz is no fool and won’t bring him on if he thinks he can’t make him the player he was. Fact is if he joins us and wants to prove Shanny wrong we could have the most feared front 4 in the last 20 or 30 years. Thats the type of gamble I’m willing to take…

I am going to take it a step further. If Albert plays how we know he can, along with Suh being himself and only getting better, with Avril becoming a top speed rusher, and Vanden Bosch/ Lojack/ Mcbride rotating the other end position. Could we have arguably have the most feared D-line – EVER.

Yes, saying ALOT, but I do not see it as that absurd.

Ok

you nailed the 1st two picks I love Harris and Matthews. I want Moffit but I kind of agree with you in he won’t be there when we need him too. Some picks I have no knowledge of BUT based on all this I gave you a rec….A REC? why would I do that if I don’t know some of the players in your draft. It’s not because I am anti haynesworth as well. It is far from the fact that I am pro Lienhart..(WTF did that come from?) THIS is why you got a rec….because you speak the truth

Phonz is hands down the best we have on the team and after last year i see alot of promise in the kid. I think that he will come back stronger and more comfortable in Gun’s scheme, is he the answer for the shutdown corner we longed for , no. He is playmaker and a ball hawk from hell, he will be a very good CB in this league and i think on his way to the pro bowl in 2012.

Leinart??? Seriously?

Dude couldn’t even beat out Dan Orlovski for the backup spot on Houston. I am fine with Hill and Robinson as backups.

I'll pay Drew twice of Lienharts first contract

just to prevent that from happening. LOL

I know its off the wall...

but Leinart has skill burried under all that baggage created by poor coaching. Lets be honest if Drew can be some what successful in Detroit under Schwartz just imagine what he could do with a former first round pick and we all know Detroit likes to coach them up after there team has given up on them.

So it wasn't Ryan Leaf it was the coaching?

Leaf was just a one hit wonder...

Matt could be a good #3 for Detroit and grooming him into the offense will enable him to step right in after Hill’s departure.

I really like your draft

I just watched some highlights from some of the above and can say I really like it and would not be suprized at all if it went down this way. With hat said I would make a change. The only change I would make is instead of taking Terrance Toliver in the 3rd we trade our 5th or 7th to move up in the 2nd to pick up Moffit ( I will say it on any and every thread that I want Moffit and Carter). So with that said I would like your draft alot but would rather look like this.

1st Round – DB Brandon Harris, Miami
2nd Round – LB Casey Matthews, Oregon or LB Bruce Carter, North Carolina
2nd Round – OL John Moffit, Wisconsin
4th Round – OL James Carpenter, Alabama
5/7th Round – CB/S Chris Culliver, South Carolina
UDFA – RB Brandon Saine, Ohio St.

FA wise I have no clue what will happen but I don’t think we need Lienhart. We can go with what we have at QB or try a UDFA. We need to find a LB and maybe a DB in FA to shore up the loose ends. Wow our needs are getting smaller and smaller every year for a change.

Some of the players...

Albert, I’m on the fence on him. Not sure if he’s turned into a product of what the Redskins developed. Snyder (owner) has thrown LOADS of money down the toilet. He’s really made it worse for the entire league for some of the stupid contracts he’s created over the years. Why else would Gibbs leave? At least Gibbs had integrity to step down rather than consume all of the money with a knucklehead at the helm.
Anyway, Matthews is going to be a decent player. Not sure if he’ll live up to his brother, but he looks like he would have a chip on his shoulder to out perform his brother. I’d take him.
Other LB’s to consider and in no particular order:
Sturdivant, Jones, Carter, Irving, Ayers, Houston, Miller… we just need more than one IMHO. and FA: Harris, Greenway, Carpenter.
Plus a top notch CB: Harris, Prince, Peterson, Smith… Namdi or Cromartie in FA.
As for the OL: pick up a OG or two, I really thought Hilliard was doing a great job, not just good, but GREAT compared to Gosder. Gos was killing us (and Peterson) with the penalties. I think Gos went on the DL so he wouldn’t lead the league.

I don't think that's true about Gos this year.

correct me with official stats, but I don’t remember him getting called as much this year (certainly nothing like Peterman and not as much as Pettigrew either)

Hilliard was called for more penalties than Gos I believe.

And Gos played twelve games to Corey’s four. I don’t have access to those stats now, but I will check it and post it here when I get home tonight.

According to ProFootballFocus both were called for five penalties this year.

Gos got them in 846 snaps, Corey in 271. Gos gave up two sacks, Corey one.

WR...

why not just put Brown or Mo Mo out there. Mo has got SPEEED to boot, and it gets him on the field. Is that even worth it? If I were Mo, I’d do whatever it takes to get on the field. He can always backup the RB position.

If I were to use a running back for WR

Kevin Smith, he can run sadly injuries have prevented him that. At WR he has less chance of injury while still being able to make plays.
