I received a lot of responses from my first blog today that we should draft at positions that we are already set at such as DE in the event that somebody like Clff Avril doesn't resign or if KVB goes down again. I personally think that we should draft at positions we have legit needs at.
If Cliff doesn't resign with the Lions then we have at least a few temporary replacements. If KVB goes down with another neck issue then again we have another DE position that needs to be filled. Guys that's two huge "if-then's" and I do not think that we are in the position where we can potentially use a 1st round pick to prepare for something like that. If Cliff doesn't resign than I could consider it but we are still forgetting about positions where we have virtually no depth at all.
Lets talk about Linebacker for a minute. Our best player is Levy, and when he wasn't injured, he was good. That was less than half of the season. OK so that's our MLB... what about the SAM and WILL positions? Guys like Carpenter stepped up when they were needed but they aren't our long term answers and there is a reason why they were available in the middle of the season. Can we possibly rely on FA to address those? First off there isn't anyone out there who is going to be a game changer and can anyone possibly justify paying an OK ILB 25 Million dollars over 5 years who is just a solid player? We took it in the asshole to get Nate Burleson and KVB here and they weren't even the best FA's available. If LB is what the Front Office is thinking then we have to go with Akeem Ayres only because he will be the best available at that time and we will have to fill the other side with a FA who won't be anything special but he will feel like it after he sees the check we cut him.
Now on to the secondary which mind you I am heavily in favor of addressing first. If Houston does not resign than our best CB is Alphonso Smith... that's pretty scary. In the first round, McShay has the Lions taking Nate Soldier... the reason he has us taking a OT is because he believes Patrick Peterson, Prince Amukamara, and even Jimmy Smith well be off the board. Kiper has us taking Smith because he doesn't think he'll be gone just yet and thinks Solider at #13 is a reach. I actually agree with Kiper and I think Smith is our best option and all the more reason to resign Houston. If we draft a cover corner than the passes will go to Alphonso and I do not want to relive Thanksgiving 16 (or even 18) times in 2011. By combining the pass pressure that we know our DLine can give with our corners and saftey's shutting all receivers down, it forces the 5 yard pop passes off the QB's backfoot. Those passesare a lot easier to create turnovers on than the 20+ yard bombs that we were often beaten on.
The Offensive Line is a concern and even though it was consistent last season I'm still not relaxing in my seat. Godsler is not only inconsistent but also had a significant injury. Peterman is good enough for now but the RG needs to be upgraded. Dom is a good center but is undersized and the only thing that seems to dominate is his mouth. Sims is solid, that's why we signed him for 4 more years. Backus? Well that's a blog for another day. There are issues and I agree a draft pick should be used to address them... just not #13.
We all have different opinions and philosophies on how to Draft. If you're the New England Patriots than you can afford to use your 1st round to cushion a position for Depth but we are not the Patriots, we are the Lions. We are the team who had 8 straight years of horrible decisions and for that we have had to literally dismantle are entire team and practically set a record for trades in a 2 years span. We can stick to the Kiper rule and draft the best player available but at #13 its a little hard to tell what player will best available so you have to plan for what we need the most and quite frankly I do not think that drafting a DE, RB, or OL with our first pick makes any sense what so ever. But what do I know? I just played High school football and sell women's shoes.... just kidding!
