My 10 players to watch at the combine
Obviously you have to watch all the players but I have a hand full of guys that have peaked my intrest. Some have been talked about around here others have not so much. With the Combine coming up close I thought i'd share some of them with you.
Brandon Harris CB, MIA- I have talked about him alot I expect Harris to have a very good combine and improve his draft status. I would not be suprised if he locks himself in as the 3rd best corner at the combine.
Casey Matthews ILB ORE- Matthews has the genetics to be great and the work ethic to match. He has areas to improve but you must remember Clay Matthews didn't come on hard before his senior year. The Lions have showin intrest in him so I think we need to watch him close.
Titus Young WR Boise- Another guy the Lions have showin intrest in. A pure speed reciver to stretch the defense exactly what are offense needs. He had a rough senior bowl but don't count him out based on one sub par game.
Mike Pouncey C/G FLA- Pouncey is a beast but some what of a project. I doubt we will see him in detroit but should he drop to round 2 like some say he will it could become a great possibility.
John Moffit G WIS- Moffit is a very solid all around gaurd and a monster run blocker. I think there is a very good chance we could have a shot at Moffit in the mid rounds and could start before the season is out.
Nate Solder OT COL Tyron Smith OT USC- The Lions have mentioned protecting Stafford is a high priority so don't rule out a Tackle. Either one of these guys could be the BPA at pick 13 Mayhew might just pull the trigger so keep your mind open to a tackle.
Bruce Carter OLB NC- No Carters injury will not allow him to compete at the combine but I think it is important for him to be there. Not only for interviews but it gives you an idea of just how bad he wants to play in the NFL. We could take a shot at him if he slips to the 3rd round or later could be a fantastic pick if he can play in the coming season.
Aaron Williams CB TEX- If we wait until round 2 to take a CB Williams will probably be are best option. Both of the corners from Texas are very good but Williams seems to be projected the best of the 2.
Prince Amukaruma ( probably wrong spelling) CB NEB- Lions seem to love there huskers but Prince is the number 2 corner in the draft. The Combine means a ton to his draft status. Prince could drop to 13 but he needs to answer some questions that have come up as of late.
Stefan Wisniewski C/G Penn St- can play right gaurd natrual and is also a terrific run blocker. If Williams is off the board and we don't want to reach for Curtis Brown is is possible we go Gaurd in round 2. This guy had a monster week of Senior Bowl practices and impressed many scouts.
Obviously I could catch a ton of B.S for leaving out players BUT the point of this is I want to know everyone elses list of players to watch. Obviously I have more as well but I thought it would be good for us to throw some names around to keep an eye on this weekend. Especially ones we haven't discussed to death *cough cough* So have at it who is you top 10 players to watch?
No Det32 Akeem Ayers can't be all 10 players on your list LOL

Haha.
I love the guys who pronounce it like it’s hooked on phonics.
“And we had en-DAH-moo-kong Suh on that tackle. That kid’s having a really special year, ain’t he Bob?”
“You got that right.”
Every. Single. Game.

Allow me to assist.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNL0h4tmxYA
This video will make you like the guy. He runs like he’s angry. Possesses good pad level, quick first step, and really drives into defenders and finishes his runs.
O yah, the kid has a motor, no he has a hemi.
Fun to watch, except when he runs over your team.

And his acceleration is fantastic, especially after he gets hits the first time, he gets right back to that top gear.

Impressive very methodical and patient with his runs I want to see more of him this weekend
Could see him paired with Best for a long time if he can do that in the NFL
but please…don’t say “pad level” ugh..hahaha

Well I mean look at the kid.
I have no idea how he manages to keep moving forward. Someone leaning that parallel to the ground should, by some laws of physics, fall.
Right?
Yeah
looks like he has alot of strength in his legs the way he fights to keep up right

CB Ras-I Dowling, Jimmy Smith
C Tim Barnes, Stefan Wisniewski
"The right (draft) move sometimes might be to strengthen a strength. Filling holes in the 1st round leads to grabs and busts." - Steve_Chiefs.
wow
I was just comparing Best’s combine #s to the other fastest out there (Chris Johnson, DeSean Jackson, Mike Wallace…) and he really has got to be in the top 5 for fastest/quickest all around player (his 10 sec dash, and cone drill times are phenomenal).
Also, I don’t remember Delmas being a top performer in EVERYTHING (40-yard dash | Bench press | Vertical jump | Broad jump | 3-cone drill | 20-yard shuttle)..I mean, I knew he did really well, but jeeze…when’s the last time someone dominated the combine like that (at their position)?
RA
Delmas
I just have to post some more on Delmas, he doesn’t get enough love (I know we all love him, but he’s seriously got some more climbing before reaching his ceiling – at least in coverage and recognition, because he has the skills and intelligence…).
Was reading the combine’s/NFL.com scouting report and it mentioned scouts being concerned about Delmas’ size holding up against the run…that’s laughable in hindsight. Here’s the analysis:
“Positives: Athletic build with the frame to carry additional mass. … Active safety, unafraid to come up and support the run. … Physical defender who flashes some explosiveness as a hitter. … Reliable form tackler who attacks ballcarriers at their knees and wraps up securely. … Good lateral agility to break down in space in the open field. … Good instincts in coverage. … Reads the quarterback and breaks on the ball. … Smooth backpedal and appears to have at least adequate straight-line speed. … Natural playmaker. … Times his leaps well and can highpoint passes. … Team captain. Negatives: Lacks the bulk most teams prefer. … Likes to evade blockers, rather than taking them on and shedding blocks. … Resorts to low tackles and will, occasionally, duck his head and swipe. … Can be more pesky than forceful as a tackler and will get dragged, at times. … Aggressive defender; can be beaten with play-action. … Questionable level of competition.”
Pretty true except for the “pesky” and “will get dragged” comments…maybe that happened in college, but I can’t recall that in the NFL…
With him having that surgery, I think this will be his breakout season (and at least be an alternate in the pro bowl)
RA
LOVE DELMAS
I really do. HE was actually the first piece to our new defense. He could have a been a first rounder easy. Glad we got him!

I'm not looking at any guys in particular, just positional groups
Interior Lineman, Wide Receivers, Linebackers and Defensive Backs especially.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
I'd keep an eye on Bruce Carter's brother

As with most players, it depends who you ask
There are a few saying fourth, a few saying sixth, but for the most part a lot of people are saying fiiiiiiiiiiiif.

I think Leonard Hankerson is someone else to watch
I think we would have to use a 2nd because I don’t think he will be there in te 3rd. I also like Stefan Wisniewski a lot. I don’t think he is a reach in the 2nd at all. He is a beast and will only get bigger. Plus he can play either guard or center
Hankerson is good
I don’t see him getting past the Colts in round 2. They have a few reciver issuse with Collies concussions, Wayne isn’t getting any younger and Garcon seems to have fallen out of Peytons good graces a little.

Yeah but the Colts for the most part
Don’t draft lineman high. Ugoh is the one exception and look how that worked out he’s a Lion now. Alot of guys they get are low round or UDFA guys. They like to take skill players high in the draft and lineman late.

I think it will all depend what the Lions do with their 1st pick
If they go defense I really think they will address the O Line, and I really like Wisniewski. I think the combine just like every other year is going to really help narrow down a possible direction the Lions might go
by lionfan4life on Feb 24, 2011 2:40 PM EST up reply actions
They don't draft linemen high
to their peril. I’m hoping this may be the one year they get wise and finally do it, and a lot of analysts seem to think that’s probably the best move (as usual).
To be fair though
Jeff Saturady worked out ok probably going in the Hall of Fame. Yeah they need to strengthen the line around Jeff with some top talent but I don’t think they will. Who knows though.

I don't know how much that has to do with it
Truth is though Peyton and Jeff are forever tied at the hip. Imagine how hard it is to be Peytons right hand man when it comes to calling audibles and plays. Saturday is not only a great player at center and the leader of the O line his abillity to adjust and understand what the QB is callin is underrated I think. My opinion though I wouldn’t be suprised if he gets in.

I think we could probably all just watch the combine objectively and see who does the best
Why would you focus only on a couple players? Watching the combine is a whole-day process, not 15 minutes. YOu don’t just get to say oh I’m going to watch these few select players and that’s it. It takes like 4 hours or some crap to go through and is at a snail’s pace. You can easily watch everyone without a problem. It’s not like it’s on 6 channels. It’s on one that gives you one picture. Maybe if you were actually attending the combine you’d have to focus on certain guys, but we’re not.
Nice List to watch...
Its so hard to narrow it down to 10 players, i am curious to see the 3 North Carolina player that missed the season mainly Little out of the 3.
Jake Kirkpatrick
Rashad Carmichael
Brandon Saine
John Clay
Jonas Mouton
I am unsure if all will be there. Saine, Clay and Mouton could all go undrafted.

my darkhorse 4th round pick. He was a RB at Syacuse for two season than switched to LB his final two.

He worked out pretty well for both of our teams this year.
Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!
Green Bay Packers: Super Bowl XLV Champions!!!!
How do you figure that? The guy barely played in Detroit and was injured.
I don’t know what he did in Green Bay, but he was pretty much a zero here.
He did as much in GB as he did in DET.
That was sarcasm.
Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

Tyron Smith is the OT we need to be watching
he measured in today at the combine at 307, about 20 pounds heavier then his playing weight this season, and since his weight (or lack thereof) was the number one bullet point against him he should rocket up the board. He also had a ridiculously insane reach of 36 3/8 inches, which is very good for a OT. Factor in his crazy athleticism and you have a guy I would probably have no issues with us taking at thirteen.
Yes guys, I know, Backus played very well last year, but the fact is that he’s gonna be 34 when the season starts and realistically probably only has a couple of years of good football left in him. O-Line wouldn’t be my first choice as a position to draft, but Smith looks very much like the real deal, and could protect Staff’s blindside for the next ten years.
Tyron Smith
Is the only guy I’d consider taking at 13th, and has been for at least a month now. Gabe Carimi is the other guy on my radar, but I won’t pick him at 13th.
He also had 29 reps yesterday
six better then Solder, despite the fact that Smith’s arms are an inch and a half longer. I’m definitely getting ready to dust off the ol’ bandwagon and slap a “Tyron Smith” bumper sticker on the back of it.
My concern though is that after such an impressive combine we’re not gonna have a chance at him. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he was a lock to go in the top ten after this combine. And as impressive as he looks right now, we’ve still got a lot of combine left, so I’m gonna wait ‘till it’s all said and done before I start campaigning for any guys.
smith
abruptly pulled out of the combine after the weightlifting? haven’t heard if he hurt himself or what happened. but maybe this will drop him to us afterall?
by yooperlionfan on Feb 26, 2011 12:14 PM EST up reply actions
I hope so
I looked into it, and apparently he re-aggravated a knee injury that he got back in December. Supposedly it’s nothing serious, just a sore knee, but he felt it would affect him enough that he didn’t want to do the rest of the drills today. He says he’ll run the rest of his drills at his Pro Day, so we’ll have to wait a little while for those numbers.
Robert Sands
I think thats his name. He plays safety. I’d also like to see Mattews and Pouncy. I will also be watching closely at some of the position groups like DB and LB.
