Nebraska Fans: Prince Amukamara?

This is quite the interesting offseason already for the Lions.  It has been several years since I can remember so little urgency in terms of revamping the entire team in the hopes of restoring the roar.  Yet, there are definitely positional holes that need to be addressed if we want to continue on the upswing.

There have been a lot of people, not just here at POD but in the sports media as well, talking about the Lions taking Nebraska CB Prince Amukamara if he falls to the #13 position.  I don't have quite the confidence in Amukamara as I have had in the last few draft picks.  I have a close friend and co-worker who is a huge Cornhuskers fan and he claims that Prince Amukamara is highly overrated and will likely bust in the NFL, most notably bringing up his inability to cover properly in the last couple of games of the year for Nebraska.  There are reasons why his stock has fallen over the months.

I wanted to get some of our newly-acquired (thanks to Suh) Cornhusker fans' opinions on Prince, since they watched him play for so long.  If he were to fall to #13, is he worth a look?  Can we take a chance on a CB that makes people a little unsure, or do the Lions need to take advantage of the deep LB list in the draft this year?

Pamukamara_medium

Personally, I feel the Lions need to go after a veteran CB somehow and get a LB from the draft that can learn from Levy.  Either way, I trust Schwartz and Mayhew at this point.   They have been doing an excellent job since coming in here after the 0-16 season.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LIONS!!!

Prince will bust because your friend likes the Cornhuskers or are you asking for our opinion on whether we buy into the Prince hype??

Life is being on the wire, everything else is just waiting.

For sure...

Twon, you should definitely make a similar post on Nebraska’s SBN site, like latif said. Someone did this recently for both Nate Solder and Jimmy Smith, and it was definitely nice to hear from someone who actually followed the team of the player in question…

Before the season ended i was for Prince.

But now picking at 13 its unknown who will fall to us, i really don’t have a must have in the 1st round it could go in many direction. I think Prince needs to have a decent combine mainly his 40, i trust in Mayhew, Schwartz and Gun to continue with there success in the draft and scouting players.

Not sure where this "Prince is falling" stuff is coming from.

When I look at any Mocks or Boards of the gurus, almost all of them have Prince going between # 7 and # 11. There has been some chatter that he might fall to the Lions at # 13, but nobody is mocking that. Wes Bunting has been pretty vocal that Prince is not a top ten pick, and backs it up by mocking him at # 17, but everyone else still has him near the top ten. Lets see how the combine plays out.

I see where you're coming from Twan82 -4 the rest of y'all haters...

Last year seemed like everybody wanted a piece of Donovan Warren. In the Preseason he was graded by some websites to be drafted in the late first and second round… then he moved back to the third… then the 5th… and then day 3 of the draft comes and he goes un-drafted.

Like Latif mentioned – creating this post on Nebraska’s SBN website should’ve been the first move – however should you do that Twan, please, link it to this post. I know Warren FAILED my eye test consistantly… while still getting praise by some. Amukamara probably isn’t in the same boat as Warren – but when the red flag is there it should be investigated.

Its important to note as well – that once the reputation of a player has been built its hard to change that perspective. Regression – if he had been screwing up the last hand full of games then I am sure NFL teams are going to recognize what fundamental broke down. Could be as easy or tough as fixing a baseball swing.

This will be a case of " In Mayhew We Trust"

Players will move up and down in the next 2 months. I really do not have a fear of anyone that Mayhew drafts will bust.

if Prince doesn't have the off the charts athleticism to succeed in the NFL at corner

move him to SS. I think I read in a couple of places that Prince could make a great safety. He’s kind of in the same boat as Malcom Jenkins from that other school

If Prince falls, take him.

I don’t see how he could be a bust. Even if he doesn’t turn out to be a top-tier corner, he will still be a good football player and will contribute in some way. Prince struggled at times, but he is a really really good CB. If anyone says spped is the reason he isn’t going to be a good CB, then that is just the stereotype going around right now. Speed isn’t the be-all-end-all of NFL players, and even if he isn’t a 4.3 guy he will still be fast enough to play CB. What he struggled with is playing against bigger guys and getting vertical to break up passes. He still needs to work on his technique a bit, but every prospect does. Remember, he’s only been playing defense for a couple of years, so he theoretically still has plenty of room to grow. He’s going through a full combine, so he has nothing to hide.

I made a post on Prince awhile ago and i think that his speed isn't not as big a issue as....

his lack of ball location. After reviewing film of who he had issues with jump balls and fighting for the ball it became clear that it wasn’t because he physically can’t. These issues where directly related to his lack of finding the football in time. You can’t break up a pass or make a play on the ball if your don’t realize where it is. I know i beat this dead horse to a pulp …just feel like that is such a critcal aspect of playing coverage. And like any skill this can be taught but great corners do it instinctively…like shooting a jump shot or any basic skill….you can practice it but if you aren’t good in the beginning then to me it is hard to justify drafting a player with these weaknesses at 13th overall and then expect him to “work on that”…corners that don’t have a knack for getting their eyes on the football will never be great in coverage. A aspect of the Lions defence that is in need of impact…..play making in the back 7.

Yes we've had this discussion.

But it’s not like he falls apart every time it’s thrown deep. He stilll made some plays in those situations. You just picked out a few of his worst plays. I watched him all year, and I don’t think the problem is as bad as you say nor do I think it is something he can’t work on. He made plays all year, and often times shut down his part of the field. That was part of the reason the rest of the DBs got so many picks.

i watched him too. I only used those highlights to note what i had already seem....

…lack of situational awareness. And that can be found on any clip/game you can find. It wasn’t just in those clips …it was the theme of his play that defined why i made the fan post i made. You can work on locating the ball but this is mainly situational awareness…the MAIN skill needed to excel in coverage. Thats like drafting a shooter that can’t shoot and then say “well he is working on it”. Oh and btw he didn’t shut down his side of the field alot of teams went right at him which is alarming…even Baylor Bears went after him. Who does that if he is ‘shutting down’ his side of the field ? I see him as a safety ..maybe a really good safety at best right now.

I'm trying to find a stat for number of times a DB is thrown at but am having trouble.

The only pass defense stats I’ve found say that Prince defended 13 passes this year and had 13 PBUs (pretty efficient I’d say). Maybe I slept threw half the season, but I just don’t understand where you saw teams pick on him all year.

I'm slowly watching the Nebraska games form this past year

Thus far, they’ve hardly thrown his way…but I can update when I’ve seen more than 3 games…

No team in their right mind would draft a guy as early as # 13, then try and teach him a new position.

Well, that’s probably not true [Aaron Maybin?], but I hope the Lions are smarter than that.

Suh Factor

I got no proof, I got no stats, but I feel if Prince is going to succeed in the NFL, it will be with the Lions.

I can only say that with an incredible D-line, Prince put up great numbers (Junior year). The Lions not only have an incredible D-line, they have one of his Junior year lineman (nothing new there).

I don’t know what that means for the Lions, or what happened to him his Senior year. Nebraska still had a great D-line (how can you not drop a little with the loss of Suh).

I think this is all moot as Prince will not be there at 13. Without any Bradfords or Suhs at the top, this could be the draft to trade up. I just wonder if Management would/could mayhew him from some other team?
