Can someone please explain this?
This was just posted on Mlive ten minutes ago. Its the last bullet point from a summary of Lions GM Martin Mayhew's press conference at the combine. You can find it here...
http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2011/02/highlights_from_interview_with.html
Julian Peterson will be released from the team. The Lions are not holding on to him in hopes of trading him and Mayhew insisted he would be released at some point. That might come shortly before the league year ends on March 3, but Mayhew refused to give any more details.
Could someone PLEASE give me a reason for this? They are not trying to trade him and they are waiting till just before the end of the league year (lockout) to release him.
So I want to hear your explanation. Go

For those who’ve asked why #Lions haven’t released Julian Peterson yet. They will, just want to make sure he’s healthy first.

They must just be doing that for Petersons benifit
To my knowledge the Lions haven’t released anyone yet but that also explains why Dizon is still here. I would imagine if there is a roster bonus due at any point they will not pay it though and release the player.

someone needs to look this up
That just doesn’t sound right. And I’ve never been wrong in my life so…
sounds about right
i don’t think the lions would be petty enough to hold onto JP just to screw him over. at least that’s my hope.

You can release an injured player, but...
current CBA rules require that the players is given an injury settlement and that the team pays for all medical care related to the injury. Of course, all of that will be out the window when the CBA expires.
I agree with the above comments.
I don’t believe the Lions are waiting to release him just to screw JP.
Since i really haven't a clue... i have to agree with the above also.

hmm
If they release Peterson on March 3rdd, then he cant sign with any other team. He is stuck in limbo like the rest of the league. Maybe the Lions want some revenge for his crappy play this season

I'm pretty sure the point with this (and I should have added it originally)
…is that the Lions didn’t want to release him while he was rehabbing or whatever. In that regard, they’re being very generous to Peterson, although it won’t matter once the CBA expires.

Not sure what the concerns are
Peterson has been told he will be released. The news media and the fans have been told. I just do see why anyone should have concerns when he is released. It is not like the Lions can get much in return. Maybe Mayhew knows of a team that would like to sign him but does not want to trade for him. He is making them wait til the CBA is renewed.
This is also speculation but...
It may be possible that the Lions are keeping Peterson on the roster because of their contract for health insurance. If Peterson is rehabbing an injury from the past season then the Lions may have decided it is cheaper to keep Peterson on their roster for now. That would allow them to cover Peterson’s rehab expenses on their health insurance contract. If they decide to release Peterson the team may be obligated to give Peterson an injury settlement according to current CBA rules.
I was under the impression that an injury settlement is only required by the CBA if you are going to release a player that was on injured reserve. However, that may not be the only case where an injury settlement is required by general law. If Peterson was injured at the workplace the employer has an obligation under the law to provide medical care. So in this case the Lions may have been informed by Peterson’s agent that they must provide him with health care even if they release him until his injury rehab is done.
All of that will change if the owners lockout the players. While injury liability under the general laws of each state will still apply, the Lions probably will not be able to continue covering their players under their current health care contract. I do not know the exact nature of the health are contract, but under normal conditions all benefits stop during a work stoppage from a lockout or strike. That is part of why many unions are providing health care overage for their employees.
