Lions Notes: 'Great Things Ahead For Matt Stafford'

  • Jim Schwartz talked about how having a franchise quarterback in Matthew Stafford affects the Lions' approach to the draft.
  • Schwartz said there are "great things ahead for Matt Stafford."
  • North Carolina linebacker Bruce Carter is doing his rehab (from an ACL injury) at the same facility in Florida as Stafford.
  • The deadline to appeal the guilty ruling about tampering for the Lions was this past Monday. There was no word on if the Lions decided to file an appeal, and they had no comment about it on Monday.
  • Tom Kowalski wrote earlier this week that the Lions' coaching staff felt like they did nothing wrong as it relates to the tampering charge. Jim Schwartz came out and said the wrong decision was made while in Indianapolis, but Martin Mayhew's comments made it sound like the Lions were ready to move on. Perhaps the tampering charge wasn't from something Gunther Cunningham did and Mayhew knows more about what happened than the coaches.
  • Zack Follett said that he will probably go through another series of tests before training camp to make sure he can get on the field.
  • Kyle Vanden Bosch has been working out non-stop this offseason to get back to full health and full strength, and he has been doing so with linebacker Keith Bulluck.
  • Jason Hanson is the Lions' 2010 Ed Block Courage Award winner.
  • STACK.com has a video of Ndamukong Suh taking part in the Gatorade Athlete Testing series.
  • Speaking of Suh, he will be on NFL Network at both 6 and 7 p.m. on Monday.
  • Plaxico Burress will be out of prison in June.

Is Carter going to make it into the 2nd rd?

I know he’s rehabbing and all, but I haven’t really been following how that’s going to affect his draft position.

If so, and if we take O-line in the 1st, there’s our 2nd rd pick.

Thats were he is projected.

Potentially we could land Prince and Carter

There is hope

It's a terrible thing to have to tell your fans, who have waited like Detroit's have, that their team won't win it this year. But it's better than lying to them.

Prince will never get past the Norsemen .

Too much talnt to pass on for QB . Then Mallett in the 2nd as you trade up with us in fear of loosing him . We already have plans of moving back into the third for a QB to groom if need be . We too have a strong need for a true OLB with Leber heading to FA .

Sweet Jebus, I hope you wait until the third to grab a QB

I would love for you guys to be starting Webb next year when we play you.

I don't know CL...

I was also on the sign Plax bandwagon at first…however, I worry that he will be 34 years old and out of football for 2 years. He is not like Mike Vick in that he still has his youth. I love what the guy could do BEFORE the prison stint, but I think the Lions will steer clear of Burress just based on the fact that there are too many what ifs involved. IF he could come back in the same form as he was in during the last super bowl run by the Giants, then I would agree he would be worth a 2-3 year deal MAYBE…but how likely is that at this point?

I am no looking to mortgage our future on the dude

If we could get him for something like 2 years 5 million with 2 mill guaranteed. I would go for it. And I don’t think he is going to get much more than that.

I see you with ...

a slot guy like Vereen in the 4-5th range . And why not the next Emmit Smith in Ingram . He could be a great long term offensive weapon . Look what AP did for us when we pulled that trigger ?

by gothicpurple on Mar 5, 2011 7:07 PM EST up reply actions

Hey gothic

There is a huge difference between AP and Ingram. And it’s not like we have all that beef up front to open up those gaps. Ingram was hurt in school AP wasn’t. AP came out with the hype that he is living up to, Ingram isn’t. AP was the best player on his team in school, Ingram isn’t even the best RB on his team in school.

Ontop of all that AP has the big play potential

Not that Ingram can’t but AP is a much bigger threat in the way Best is to bust a big run with his speed.

Vike's dark thoughts ...

First a comment on the article . Stafford is only part of the key to passing on a QB . If you can retain your depth at QB it will hold true .
Carter will be available in the first part of round #2 . But your Lion’s don’t pick in the first part . This will be a difficult draft for Lion fans to handle with my Vikes picking ahead of them with all but our 2nd 5th rd pick . OL,DL,LB,S,CB and impact OFF players will be taken ahead of you . Unless you trade up or past to take a player with issues . I see frustration for you in rounds 1,2,and 4 so far . We were trade partners with mutual success last year . Can it work again with the shoe on the other foot ?

by gothicpurple on Mar 5, 2011 6:59 PM EST reply actions

Heres the difference Goth

In 1 of the first 2 rounds you guys HAVE to draft a QB, you have what 1 QB on the roster as of today? And I can’t see your FO being happy with a cast off from Houston as being your savior at that position. I mean Webb as your starter???? Come on I can’t beleave that any HC would want to start his career with a non-QB as his go to guy. I just can’t see your FO passing on 1 of the top 3 QB’s at the #12 pick. I see Locker being in Purple next season.

+1 I just looked at your depth chart.

You don’t even have Sage on your roster anymore so X out that comment about a cast off from Houston.

How is possible?

That Ben Roethlisberger was able to play in the Super Bowl after only missing 4 regular season games and Plaxico has to sit in prison for 2 years.

Note: please spare me the “Roethlisberger was never convicted, charges were dropped” comments. I know, I know.

More to the point

He had his accusations dropped. He’s never been even charged for anything in his life.

by Mavyrk on Mar 7, 2011 6:06 AM EST up reply actions

You asked a question

and then said we couldn’t answer it with the correct answer. What was the NFL supposed to do? There’s not much you can do to someone who in the eyes of the law wasn’t even guilty of anything. I don’t think that there’s much doubt that Plax did shoot himself. That’s all up to the courts, and the legal system couldn’t put Ben away without being proven guilty. After saying all that, I realized that you know the answer, but just think that there’s not any justice to it.

by sthelen_45 on Mar 7, 2011 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

That's because I knew the correct answer.

The question was rhetorical. Not really meant for an answer.
I was just saying Big Ben allegedly raped/assaulted two women in consecutive off seasons. Plax shot himself. Not blaming the NFL either, just not fair. That’s all.

To old

and he didn’t want to play here last year. We can’t get him just for his next one year stop. We need guys who can play long term and help build this team.

Last year he basically said that Detroit wasn’t an option for him because he wanted to play for a contender. I understand that Detroit hasn’t been real good for years…but I don’t like the negative attitude. I want a guy that’s gonna come in here thinking “Who cares if they weren’t that good last year. This is a new year, this year we go all the way” That’s the kind of attitude I would like to see. Not this “I only wanna play for a contender” crap. Plus, the tape I saw on Bullucks last year, didn’t look so hot.

nice

I loved it when Gunny would use that 3-1-3 technique. It worked great against the Redskins when he’d have KVB standing up wondering around between the D line and the line backers. I can’t remember who he did it against later in the year with Suh doing the same thing. It was pretty damned sweet though.

MATT STAFFORD

the question of this coming year how do we keep this guy upright. it’s going to be tuff with only five draft picks to work with.mayhew has been a wizzard at finding diamonds in the rough but i don’t want a rookie lineman to protect stafford next year.i would like to build up the defense with our draft picks.peterman in my opinion has to go he has too many penalties last year .raiola is the other link thats bad on our line, but i don’t think we can move both this year.

by lionsforever on Mar 7, 2011 8:48 AM EST reply actions

Peterman did have a lot of penalties…but two big ones were reversed and a lot of the other ones were ticky tack calls that stopped when other players on other teams started pointing out that Detroit seemed to have a lot of odd penalties go against them. As far as Dom. I love Dom, been a fan since they drafted him. I’ve always thought he’s a bit undersized, but he’s smart and when he plays angry he’s good. You have to remember, the center is the QB of the Oline. He’s calling out protections while they are at the line. You can’t just have some big mauler their…you need a smart guy. I’m surprised you didn’t ding Backus at left guard, or Gos at right.

The first part of the year was pretty iffy by our line….but as the year went on they got better and better. I know, Dom and Backus are getting up there in football years, and we need to consider replacing them. Keep in mind, we have that Fox kid, so a tackle might not be a big issue now, depending on how he pans out. It would be nice to take an oline man that we can groom and not just have to throw in there, or somebody for depth. In the end, I have faith in the FO (something I haven’t been able to say in many years past). I think they’ll do whats best for the team.

i rember schwartz saying last year that some players were starters but were really backups.we need to get the run game going.to me i think peterman is a really good backup player.i like dom too but he is too small to play center in my opinion.gos seems to be getting better every year.too bad he got injured last year.backus is a warrior but he is getting up there in age
