Revealing Secondary Stats?

I was thinking about a post recently made by Kevin Seifert. I think we all agree that we need a starting outside CB.

While our pass rush was very good most of the time, you could see that when pressure did not get there, our secondary was exposed. Our prevent defense was also routinely victimized.

The stats I thought were interesting from Kevin are below:

Lions' Secondary Depth Lacking

"However, if the pass rush wasn't successful, the Lions' pass defense struggled, especially with extra defensive backs on the field. Here's how the Lions' pass defense fared with five or more DBs in 2010:"

NFL Rank
Comp pct 63.8 27th
Yards/att 7.6 31st
Passer rtg 88.6 27th

I know Det32 is always quoting how good we were against the #1 and #2 WRs and I'm not sharing this to say we were "an anemic secondary" like a lot of clueless mockers have said...it's just interesting because I think the majority of us have had sneaking suspicions that our secondary wasn't as good as the 16th rank in pass yards would indicate...

I am hopeful however. I believe our nickel and dime defense should be mightily improved in '11 if we can add a starting outside corner. Phonze played very well in the nickel and I really think Aarron Berry will be mighty fine as a dime (or even the nickel depending on how the battles work out and injuries). I'm hoping we can field a nickel package more often next year and feel confident doing it.

Thoughts?
