Nick Fairley to Detroit was a shocker, but makes sense in the long run

Martin Mayhew has stunned us once again, instead of a linebacker, tackle, or corner he picked the highest rated defensive tackle in the draft. This is probably the pick that puts the defensive line to elite status, once they get the corner and linebacker situation sorted, this defense could be downright scary.

I, for one, was excited after I found out. My Bears fan uncle texted me while I was working ( I work 2nd shift) "Oh shit, that nasty Detroit d-line just got even better. Nick Fairely to Detroit!" I was ecstatic because drafttek.com and numerous other sites have Fairley going in the top-5 and was highly considered the best defensive tackle in the entire draft. The pick was unexpected, who really thought 4 quarterbacks would've been taken in the first 12 slots and Fairley would fall into our laps?

For the third draft in a row, Mayhew has drafted the best players in the entire draft at their respective positions. First, it was Matthew Stafford, Brandon Pettigrew, and Louis Delmas as the best players at their positions. Then, Ndamukong Suh and Jahvid Best might be not have been the best back but is definitely the fastest and most versatile in the 2010 draft. Now, so far the Lions drafted the best defensive tackle in the draft for a 2nd straight year. Good job Mayhew!

The next rounds are also very important, as they still need cornerback(s), linebacker(s), offensive tackle, and a third wide receiver. This team has the makings of a playoff contender with that nasty d-line and the talent they have at the skill positions. This will be an exciting year with this year's draft picks and whomever they pick up in free agency. The Detroit Lions have finally gained enough talent to compete for their division.

On other note, I thought Cam Newton to Carolina might not be the riskiest pick in the first round. Jake Locker getting picked before Blaine Gabbert? What the hell were they thinking? Gabbert is the best quarterback in my opinion and should've been the first pick, but Newton is to help put fans in the seats again, which is to be expected. I think he is another Vince Young, one year or two wonder then nothing. He isn't dedicated to working hard, as he stated after being drafted that he was "going on a vacation". I think he will be a bust, as Locker and Ponder will too.

49ers reached for Aldon Smith, but not as much as the Falcons did. Wow! They gave up way too much for him even though he is a good prospect, he isn't worth all of that. The Lions got the best deal outside of Cleveland's deal with Atlanta. The quarterbacks outside of  Gabbert were huge reaches. I couldn't believe how many teams pulled the trigger on unproven prospects like these! I'm so glad we got Stafford, he was the unquestionable #1 rated quarterback in the draft without the question marks these guys have.

Finally, I'm very pleased so far with the first round, I hope Mayhew pulls some deals out and trades down to stockpile picks and shore up the holes we currently have. Go Lions!
