This morning I read both Kiper and McShay's latest mock drafts. I have thoughts.
First I want to give the usual people who reads my postings and vise versa mad props. For weeks a few of you guys have predicted Bruce Carter to fall into our laps at #44. I know he tore his ACL back in November against NC State and assuming he got surgery right away, he should be close to 5 months into a 6 step rehabilitation process. People heal differently than others and ACL tears are always iffy so assuming the season starts on time, he may be either fully recovered or pretty close.
Kiper and McShay have both agreed that Prince Amukamara will fall into our laps at #13 and Carter at #44... after that everything is a tossup. I do like this so far... I've been arguing with a couple of you guys over the last few weeks about whether or not it would be smart to draft an OT in the 1st round or not. Though I am starting to warm up to the idea, I'm still not sold. Just thinking about drafting defense in the first 2 rounds gets me pretty excited. I think Prince will fit in well first just off of chemistry. He obviously knows Suh from Nebraska and after the impact that Suh had for us last year, Prince has to be excited about the idea of playing with him again and being a part of the rebuilding process that Schwartz has been implementing the last 2 years. Our D-Line caused some serious chaos and mayhem last year in the backfield and forced a lot of throws off the QB's back foot. The problem was we didn't have the personnel to get the INT's we needed. Phonz grabbed 5 picks (I think) but we were still pretty low on the list. I think somebody like Amukamara won't be a "playmaker" like Peterson will be a frustrating cover corner to receivers and QB's. Forcing a QB to make a bad through in the area to an open receiver is already dangerous enough but to a smothered receiver? That his Interception written all over it. I see why everyone thinks an OT will be the best option but if for some weird reason Tyron Smith and Prince Amukamara are available at #13 when we are finally on the clock; I see taking Prince no questions asked.
I'm telling you guys, we are literally 3 players away from being a complete team. MY OPINION... if we can lock down Prince and Bruce Carter and hopefully pick up a gem in the later rounds, were going to finish the season with a winning record. Unlike so many teams this year; Detroit isn't really loosing anybody and were playing with mostly the same guys we started our 4 game win streak with last season. Where loosing Julian who surprisingly was nonexistent last year. I WILL NOT MAKE A PREDICTION! I will only say that we are just a few steps away from being a contender next year.
