Lions News From Team Workout No. 2

The Detroit Lions held their second lockout workout on Tuesday. After having around 30 players in attendance on Monday, approximately 35 players were at Detroit Country Day for the workout on Tuesday. Here's a rundown of news and notes from the workout:

  • Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson, Sammie Hill and Louis Delmas attended Tuesday's workout after being absent on Monday. No linebackers or cornerbacks have showed up yet.
  • Nick Fairley and Mikel Leshoure weren't at the first two workouts because they were in Los Angeles for Topps' NFL Rookie Premiere.
  • Burleson immediately noticed Matthew Stafford's transformation size-wise.
  • Calvin Johnson is pleased to see all the offensive weapons around him heading into next season.
  • The Oakland Press has video of an interview with Johnson.
  • Since the Lions had a full unit of offensive players in attendance on Tuesday, they ran some plays. By the end of the workouts on Thursday they could be running a two-minute drill just like they would at a normal OTA. It sounds like Stafford and Shaun Hill are doing a good job of playing the role of the coaches by installing the offense.
  • Gosder Cherilus hopes to be fully recovered from microfracture surgery in time for next season.
  • In case you're wondering where Jason Hanson has been, he is working out at a rehab clinic that was set up by the Lions before the NFL lockout began.

If you go by draft order

It only makes sense that if Leshoure was invited, Young would have been also. Everything I’ve seen with Young (interviews/attitude) has impressed me so far.

you Lions are gonna be scary

having a head start on everyone else like this.

Impressive to see such leadership from stafford already.

Any other teams working like this already?

The Saints are having 40ish man team camp down at Tulane I think it is

There have been some other player run camps by teams, but none as organized or well attended as the Lions and Saints. The Redskins have had a camp. The Jets west camp where Sanchez had the receivers and backs work with him, the Raiders East with Campbell getting together a bunch of east coast Raiders, and the Rams have been working out separately in their own unit groups. Cam Newton is working out with an ex NFL player who played under his OC. And Colin Kappernick is working out with Andrew Luck to learn the Harbaugh offense. Far as I know, that is about it.

You beat me by 1 minute Evil. . .

The G-men have had a get together as well. I’m not sure how many or anything like that I just saw that Eli had his guys together throwing the ball around.

How many lumps you want Doc?

Six or seven Giants attended.

The first few days last week. Not sure if it is continuing this week.

"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."

wow

thanks for that!

great to hear.
I’m quite an insulated Rams fan with little knowledge of the workings of other teams, although feel now is time to scout the enemy ;)

Thanks a tonne for the info, really appreciate it and rec’d :D

Maybe I'm just reading

too much into things but man Calvin’s body language scares me. I’ve always been the one saying he would never leave if we put a team around him, but I’m losing that confidence.

elaborate

he looks happy but a tad frustrated that he is tying his shoe and has mics and cameras in his face to me

I would not worry, that is just Calvin

He is a quiet kind of guy, not real outspoken, and he tends to come of a bit standoffish. I am not sure why, but I don’t blame him. If you heard the way Mike Valenti treats him in interviews you would hunt Valenti down on the road and rage on his ass some. Total disrespect. Totally trying to plant words in Calvin’s mouth and stir the dissension pot. Anything for some drama and 1 or 2 more callers. Valenti sold him mom at age 12 to the local pimp, I am convinced of it. Anyways, I think Calvin just don’t like to be bombarded with media questions because he is more the type to let his actions on the field speak for him.

I'm convinced

Valenti is trying to get him to leave…when he talks to CJ and about “THE SANCHIZE”..it drives me up the effing wall.

Meat up? Rage on his ass?

I don’t like the direction this blog is going.

by Alowicious on May 18, 2011 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Its just words, I said if YOU heard the way Valenti treats him YOU would hunt him down, never said I would :P That waste of human matter is not worth it

Mike Valenti cares about one thing and one thing alone, propping himself up enough here to get a job in New York. I wish he would become popular enough to get the hell out of Michigan, but he is too damn stupid to understand that fans don’t give a rats ass about his opinions or his take on things, or his Giants or Jets.

Fans care about their team, they want to hear legit stuff about their team, good or bad. Not some partial journalism with all the spin doctoring and ulterior motives that seem to be rampant in todays mass media. At least with blogging you know your going to get that, but with a “professional” media personality they are supposed to have the ethics and responsibility to be objective.

The really bad thing with Valenti is that you can listen to him for days in a row and he is not bad, he is even informative or entertaining at times. I used to listen to him more to support Terry Foster than anything. But eventually the guy will spew out some total crap that just goes beyond the limits of what I am willing to listen to, so I end up turning off the station for about 3 months. Then like a dumb ass I check in again to see if he has finally “gotten it” yet, get my hopes up for a day or two, and he proves himself to still be a complete idiot.

I don't see that

I just see a guy who is trying to put his shoe on with hardly any room because of the media people.

If I had 10 people trying to get as close as possible to me, I probably wouldn’t of handled it as well as he had.

by NeWtoz on May 17, 2011 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I got that too.

The jab on Michigan, the comment on how he likes being with his family, etc.

I’m kinda scared that we might lose him to Atlanta, but now that they have Julio Jones and Roddy White, it might not happen, but still.

My grandfather was a Packers fan, my father is a Vikings fan, I am a Lions fan, and there is no way in hell I am raising a Bears fan.
Oh, and I hate the Philadelphia Eagles

would be devastating to this offense and me…

I don't understand

He likes being around his family and taking it easy- just like everyone does. He’s just being honest. The thing is, he showed up to this workout which is completely voluntary to be supportive. It’s not like he needs the refresher, but he’s being a great team guy. Not too many superstars would be attending something like this…

Yeah CR, I got the same vibe as you.

Hopefully it is like some of the suggestions by other commentors. I also wonder if there is not some frustration over the lockout as well. If I was a player right now, I would find it hard to be optimistic and upbeat too. Especially if I had to talk to that black hole of negativity, Mike Valenti, every week.

Not sure why Calvin does that, I would talk to almost anyone else but Drama Queen Valenti.

"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."

Titus is very impressive in my eyes

Spoke well, seems to have some emotion behind him. I really hope he works out for us. As for CJ, I think it’s just his nature to be quiet, I’m somewhat the same. We’ve seen CJ happy in a Lions uniform, we just have to make it consistent.

When we become a playoff team

I think Calvin will be happy but he will still be quiet verbally. His play on the field will still speak volumes though.

Ah but I was so much older then and younger than right now

Why does Calvin go on that show

Seriously it always seems negative when he does. He could just say no couldn’t he. Let Dom go on the show he’d probably tear that guy a new BUNG HOLE
