I keep looking at what our roster is even before free agency and I can't help but be really excited that after all of our suffering us Lions fans will have a winner to root for.
We can all agree that we got some stud players in the draft and I happen to think that drafting a LB or a CB high in the draft wouln't have been that beneficial to next season. Obviously if we could have gotten Petersen from LSU or one of the good LB's at the right value we would have went for it. But if that player we draft is a reach at CB or LB then the FO is setting him up to fail. We would have gotten our defensive "savior" when the truth is CB's are rarely effective in their first or second season in the league. We all wanted Kyle Wilson last season and he couldn't even get on the field towards the end of the year for the Jets. I would rather draft great players in the right spot and plug in proven NFL players in high pressure spots. I'm sure our FO probably feels that Alphonso Smith still has a chance to be as good or better than any CB in this draft(except Petersen, he is the one standout sure thing). We all loved him until Thanksgiving and he will be going in to his 3rd season with a full training camp under his belt(fingers crossed). Also I don't know why everyone says we only have 1 sure thing in the secondary. Last I checked we won four games with Spievey at safety even though he was a rookie learning a new position. Could we upgrade our LB's, absolutely but I think that for a team in the 4-3 there are gonna be plenty of good LB's on free agency or waivers as more teams seem to shift to 3-4 since it takes a different skill set. Anyway you may agree with me or not but the truth is none of this matters because if Stafford is healthy we win 9-12 games and if he doesn't we probably win 6-8 games. Now let me ask you all you Backus haters do you really want a ROOKIE guarding his blindside?
