Watch your wallet...
I just read this article from PFT about how the NFL is considering fining Teams that have Multiple, Individual Player Safety Fines.
I'm not sure if they are talking about fining the team when 1 player incurs multiple fines. Or when Multiple players incur Individual fines. Or Both, but either way, I think it is Crap.
According to the Report, "Under the current propose guidelines, 4 teams would have received Significant Fines in 2010". Now, without looking up any info on who was the most fined teams last year.... I'm gonna guess that we could be up there.
The NFL's reasoning behind the Team Fines is to promote proper coaching and technique. Now I'm just assuming again, but I would wager that the Steelers were probably 1 of those four teams that could have been Fined in 2010. So by this logic, the NFL doesn't think Dick Lebeau Coaches Proper Technique? Give me a freaking break.
I get it, player safety is Important, at least while you are playing in the league. But the NFL is just after the $$$. Not only do they change the rules, for what constitutes a Defenseless player. But now if you can't play by the new rules (and we all know how clear rules are written in the NFL). We are gonna Fine you, Even if the Call is Wrong, We are still gonna UpHold that fine, And if you don't correct your behavior, or if you're friends (teammates) act up.... Were gonna Fine them too, And then We'll Fine the Team!!!

Suh was penalized for 2 legal tackles
Which would turn to team punisment. The Barber tackle was deemed legal but he was still penalized and the Cutler was just a hard shove but was fined. You can’t fine the Lions because Suh doesn’t let up on any play.

I am pretty sure the league fines go to charity
I know thats how the NBA does it

but wait, the owners don't make enough $$$ as it is. Isn't that 1 of the big points of the lockout.

This.
The fines derived from illegal hits go to charity. I can understand being upset with it on its merits, but potshotting that this is being done just because the NFL is after money?

I wouldn't be so sure...
Charitable contributions bring Tax Deductions. When James Harrison is fined $100,000 do you think he gets to write that off? I doubt it, but I’m sure the NFL takes full advantage of the $$$ they take from players when it comes tax time.

James Harrison can write it off.
If he itemizes properly. If the fine is derivative of illegal activities (obviously not) it isn’t tax deductible. It also isn’t tax deductible as a charitable donation. However it is deductible as an “ordinary and necessary” business expense.
The issue became a bit viral several years ago when Belichick was fined $500k for spygate in tax circles and whether it was tax deductible or not.
The caveat, however, is that the fines have to be greater than the sum of 2% of the player’s total gross adjusted income, as the first 2% of someone’s business expenses are not tax deductible.
We weren't even close to the top teams
in terms of fines. From what I can see, we got fined 4 times for illegal hits last year, one of which was rescinded and the other was in the pre-season, which might not even count. There are multiple teams in the league that got 3+ fines in one single week. The Lions were probably right towards the bottom of the league in terms of fines, despite our perceptions.

We take pride in helping to pay fines for players who just play football. We help players like Cliff Avril, Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh pay the hefty fines for what we deem a legal hit. This way our players can play the game of American football without concerns of going broke because of the way they play it. How do you donate to The House of Charity? this is all about the 18 game schedule
Owners: “See we’re making it safe to play a couple more games” cut thru the PR and translate it – “mo money mo money”

The players already play 20 games regardless
Why not take away 2 pre-season games and make them into regular season games. That’s what the owners are talking about doing and I don’t see why it should be that big of a deal. It would make those 2 pre-season games all that more important, if the owners and the league do it smart they could easily bump the roster up 5 more players and I would not see any problem.
How many lumps you want Doc?
In a way the Cuntler shove....
pissed me off more than the week 1 bullshit call. I mean Cuntler was running toward the endzone and was PUSHED in the back. What a freaking joke. I can’t wait for Oct. 10. The Bears still have plenty of offensive line issues. It could be worse than what the Giants did to them last year. So many back stories to this game. The botched calls, Marinelli, and Martz. What goes up comes down my friends. 35-10 Lions. Cuntler is sacked at least 6 times. You heard it here first!
"That's my quarterback man"- T.O.
I'm sure we'll take a bunch of fines
But as long as we’re getting in the opponent’s head that I don’t care.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
I wonder if the NFL
will donate to charity all the money they make from putting these “Illegal” hits on their copyrighted videos of the “Hardest hits of 2011”?
It’s ok to profit from it. It’s ok to have the league and press debate ad nauseum about it, but when the players go out and do what they have been trained to do, hurt people, they blow a gasket. There is not a fan alive that watches the games that says push the opposing player out of bounds. They all say knock the shit out of that guy. That’s not to say you they should seek to injure someone, but the intent of the defensive player is simply to hurt the guy with the ball. It’s been coached and played that way for 100 years. It’s a violent sport, if you want to protect them that much put flags on them and be done with it.
