Aaron Maybin
I'm not sure if this topic has been brought up or not. If it has, I apologize.
There has been some talk about the Bills possibly cutting former first round pick Aaron Maybin. He was the 11th pick in the 2009 draft. Yahoo sports has him listed as a linebacker, NFL.com listed as a DE. The Bills run a 3-4 defense, but I think Maybin was drafted while they were still running a 4-3 defense. I may be wrong about that. So, here's my question. Is Maybin a guy that Mayhew might take a look at?
I'm not sure if he's had problems because of the wrong scheme, but if he can actually play LB he might be worth taking a look at. If he was only moved to LB because they switched schemes, maybe not. Detroit has a lot of depth on the line and I know we've all been wondering who's going to get cut. What do you guys think?

It seems like Mayhew considers everyone (at least for a second)
so I can see him being someone they have a scout follow-up on at least, but I’m assuming Maybin hasn’t been cutting it as a LB – not sure he’d really upgrade our DEs…(but I don’t know much about him)

weight
the rumblings I’ve heard are that they aren’t happy about his playing because he is under the weight they want him to play at. He’s around 225-230lbs. They want him to play closer to 250-255.

NOOOOPE
Maybin has been a COLLOSSAL bust. I want nothing to do with him.
This isn’t LoJack who underachieved but obviously has talent, or the Phonz, who never got an opportunity.
this is a guy with 26 starts and ZERO sacks to his name, who came into the draft being touted as the next big edge rusher with 12 sacks in 2008.
The guy only played 2 years in college, and jumped to the NFL where he hasn’t been able to keep his weight up or produce in any way shape or form.
That is NOT a project we need to acquire.

I'd agree with a lot of that, Nate....
but if he were to come really cheap, we have nothing to lose here. I think BBlades intrigue is at linebacker and not as a defensive end. Personally, I think the kid is a total wash, but maybe his size is better suited to running after and covering tight ends versus moving left tackles? Who knows. We have nothing to lose at trying out linebackers other than giving up a training camp spot usually designated for an undrafted rookie free agent.
Even if his size is adequate
The fact is he’s played as a DE (2 years) and a rush LB for 2… Guy has little to no experience covering, reading, anything.
If people think Carpenter had room to improve, I think this guy would make him look like Hercules.
I’m not totally opposed, he just seems pretty useless. Personally I’d rather keep Ashlee Palmer over getting that guy.

I agree with you....
I just think with the relatively little depth we have at linebacker, there’s nothing to lose bringing a guy like him in for cheap.
I just think of it in terms of coaching.
There’s only so much coaching and focus to go around, and in the LB corps, our guys need to be coached up badly. I’d rather see Keith Bulluck here for more money than Aaron Maybin sucking the life out of our coaches with his questionable self.

The key here is he still has desire. he’s not lazy, he’s not unmotivated, he has no character issues. None of those ugly words that sway us away from prospects. The talent and desire is there, he has yet to harness it. With a good coach (hint: we have one), Maybin can come into his own as a player. I would take a shot at him if he does indeed come cheap.
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
My immediate response was "HELL NO" based on what I have heard of him from the Bill site.
And for the reasons that Nate highlighted. He is definitely not a DE prospect [IMO] and I just don’t know whether he has the ability to play OLB in our scheme. I don’t believe he has any cover ability. I would leave it up to Mayhew and Schwartz to figure out if he is worth a look.
Personally, I think we have enough projects and developmental guys right now. I would prefer they get an LB or two who have the skill set we need and give them a chance to win a job here. ie. Thomas Davis and/or Thomas Howard. Guys who don’t fit where they are, or are coming off serious injuries.
"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."
I'd have to agree with DrewsLions on this one
If we can pick him up for dirt cheap, why not? It’ll be his third year in the NFL, and people revive careers all the time. He’s young, probably very motivated to succeed seeing how everyone calls him a bust already. If he’s there for the taking, go for it.

It’s like you live in Mario Land and you stumble across a magic box. Maybe you have a 99% chance of it just containing garbage, but if it doesn’t cost anything, you still open it and see what is inside…
was that a good analogy? I’m thinking no but……

bobby carpenter had the dreaded "bust" label
and it didn’t stop Mayhew from scooping him up. Wouldn’t surprise me if he did the same with Maybin.

I'm a little torn
NorthLeft is probably right regarding his coverage ability, or lack thereof, if we try him at LB. And it seems he lacks the size and skill set to be effective at DE. (Plus we’re pretty crowded there already) So as far as fit goes, he doesn’t seems to match up well. However, training camp spots are really no big deal. So if we can bring him in like that for the cheap, it wouldn’t really matter.
It just seems like the best case scenario would be that we get a guy who proves he really does have the skills to make it in the NFL, but that those skills are different from what the Lions are looking for at that position. Unless he turns into a ball-hawking, hitting machine…
Perhaps vetran minimum
We give him a try out. Somehow a doubt he would beat out Caleb, Carpenter, Palmer and Follett for a roster spot. If Zack has to start on PUP or something though than MAYBE he would be an option.

I say give it a go...
i wasn’t a huge fan of the Carpenter signing but from that and the addition of Phonz and Pratt came P.C.P, lol.
In all seriousness i would like to see Maybin signed and given a chance to compete in camp.

Why not
Bring him into camp, see what hes got and let him compete with Willie Young for the last roster spot

If anything
They could bring him in, let KVB relax during the preseason and if he does well we can trade him for a 4th or 5th round pick. How does that sound to everybody?

Um no.
He doesn’t have the size or skill set we want in a LB and nor for a DE which we don’t need either.

I see no reason to not give him a tryout.
I mean sure he can definitely be considered a bust right now, but we have brought in lots of guys and turned them into quality players.

2 reasons for the no
1. I see us as stacked at DE.
2. I don’t think he can play OLB.

This guy has also been useless with his second coach.
Mayhew - " I think there are also a lot of positions where you see what's on the horizon and look down the road and look around the corner, it might not make sense on its face right now to add a player, but if you look down the road, it makes sense to add a player.'' Notice how he said "corner"

I can't say yea or ney
He was a standout for Penn State, and that is a team that put’s out some quality players on the defensive side of the ball. I think in Maybins defense he may have been trying to do too much since they really don’t have any talent on that side of the ball since he was drafted. Give the guy some help and see what he can do, I think he would excel in a 4-3 system not the 3-4. He could very well be a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. Now I don’t see us adding another DE and I can’t say I ever seen him play the LB position so I wont say either way we should or not go get him. If Coach wants him I’m sure Gunny could do something with a guy like him but I have not heard of any rumors that we were trying to go get us another DE at this time so I think it’s a far reach for him to be in a Lions uniform any time soon.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Unless he comes cheap,
I’d stay away, but I wouldn’t dismiss him so easily. I think a lot of guys get stiffed because they play on such bad teams. And this may be the case, here.

Why not take a look at Maybin at safety?
When he left Penn State as an underclassman, I went NOOOO! Maybin showed up at the combine and weighed in at 232 lbs. That’s 17 lbs lighter than his “advertised” weight at PSU.
Look, this kid is real young and raw. If he can’t put on the pounds, why try?
Giving Maybin a shot at safety might be just the right niche for him. New environment, new coaching, and maybe a new Maybin.
