Jason Hanson
As I was contemplating buying a new Jersey for the upcoming season... I came across a Jason Hanson jersey and it got me to thinking. Would the Lions retire his #4 when it is all said and done?
The fact that he is still in the NFL after whatever it is 19 yrs or so is amazing.
The fact that he is on the same team for that time is amazing.
The fact that the team is the Lions is the most amazing and probably deserves the congressional medal of honor.

The Lions sure are weird with their retired numbers...
It seems half of them have been un-retired and worn again.
I would love to see #4 retired. He certainly put his time in! How many times can you say taking a kicker in the second round was a VALUE pick??
Go Jason!
He is a kicker
But I’ll make an exception for him. He deserves it.

I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.
You are looking to buy New Jersey?
I know they are in financial trouble and all, but I didn’t know they were for sale. I keed, I keed. No one would pay money for New Jersey. The governor recently went to the Indian casinos to try and do a trade back, but instead of beads all the Indians offered was a groupon for 50% off a spray tan.
Anyway, since we share a first name, I will answer your question. I don’t see them retiring Hanson’s number. Sure he was the lone bright spot on a terrible team for many years, but how many kickers have ever gotten a retired number? Even HOF kickers don’t have retired numbers.
Yeah, sorry for the NJ stuff
I was on a rant in another thread.
What part of Atlanta are you in? I am on the Westside.
Ahh, way up north.
If they ever get their heads out of their ass and play football, we should get together for a game. The hardest part of being a remote fan is not having anyone to watch games with that actually cares about the team.
Hey, can I tag along?
I’m in Athens- I’d love to get with some real Lions fans to watch a game for a change. And not just Bulldog fans who want Stafford to do well.
(Truth is, the guy I watch the most games with, is a Jets fan.)

And there were a lot of people who went there from NJ.
Gotta say, I can vouch for NJ women. Extremely sexy.
PS- You guys see Stafford’s tweet regarding Mark Herzlich? – Man I wish he could bring that LA weather back with him too!
I was surprised by your Q ...
So I checked.. and Yes it has been retired .. for Barry …

Damn straight.
Not only should they retire his number after that, but they should also retire every number divisible by his jersey number. That’s how good he is.
It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

Keep it up, man!
(Good thing Hanson’s number isn’t 1…
We’d have to go to decimals!)
Wherever its posted that a kicker will be a superbowl mvp
I’ll be there.
Our next kicker will be 4.3333

I think he's a sure fire hall of famer for the Lions
I mean who else are they gonna put up on the rafters?

Don't count on it
Lions do retire alot of numbers to start with. Hanson MIGHT and a big might get his name in the ring. He is a kicker love him thats fine but nobody does that sort of thing for kickers. Name me one kicker whos number has ever been retired? It’s a nice thought but I don’t see it ever happening. Suh will get his number retired before Hanson does.

Groza
was a kicker when kickers also played a position. Groza was also an all pro tackle at one time playing both ways i think but eventually just offence then finished his career as a kicking specialist.

I'll take it though
its slim pickings to find kickers with honors like that. It is nice though that Groza, although an offensive tackle, was a more prominent kicker than OT. I could be wrong, regardless, Groza is all I could come up with to fit the retired jersey bill. Which proves Profilers point even more I’d say.

definitely
I doubt groza’s number would have been retired had he not also been an outstanding lineman. You are correct though in saying he was noticed more as a kicker.

Maybe his number was retired more for longevity.
That, and being the last of the Original Browns.

where did you find a hanson jersey
i was planning on getting one but i was going to do it as a customized jersey
its on the Detroit Lions store ...
which is mostly a ripoff …but they even have a Jerry Ball jersey on there
Im gonna go out on a limb here.
Jason Hanson could have probably played for any team he wanted to, but he’s been loyal to the lions. If he would have been on a good team all those years, everyone would probably talked about him instead of Adam Vinatieri. Just for that, he should have it retired, just like Vinatieri will.
