The Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett is reporting that Detroit Lions left tackle Jeff Backus is currently recovering from a pectoral injury. Specifically, the injury is "believed" to involve a partially torn muscle in his left pectoral. The severity isn't completely clear, nor is the timetable for him to be fully healthy.
Birkett tried to get in touch with Backus and his agent to talk about the injury, but neither responded to calls and texts seeking a comment. However, Birkett was able to get in touch with a source from the Lions to discuss the injury.
A team source described the injury as "not serious," and a spokesperson did not return phone calls seeking comment.
Let's hope this is in fact nothing too serious. The Lions are already dealing with right tackle Gosder Cherilus recovering from offseason knee surgery, and the last thing they want is their starting left tackle to be out for a lengthy period of time. Of course, we still have quite a bit of time before the start of the regular season, so perhaps some added experience as a starter at left tackle for a player like Jason Fox during the preseason wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
