I read about Backus's partially torn pec the other day. Nobody seems to know how he did it however it's reasonable to assume it was probably done during his regular workout.
I'm very skeptical about this; keep in mind the last time I can remember a Detroit Lion having a torn pectoral, it was Luther Ellis and he was out for the season. I don't know if it’s just as bad; and I'm hearing it's "not that serious" but either way I'm starting to get concerned now. Over the past year I've had endless debates with people about how good Backus really is but at this point I think we can all agree we are worse off without him. Which brings me to my next question: Who is going to fill his shoes if he misses significant time?
I know we have enough problems right now at LB and CB but this has to be a concern going into FA next Wednesday. Our biggest objective going into this season is protecting Matt Stafford. Right now Detroit is looking at Fox to be a likely successor for Gosder if he didn't fully recover from his micofracture surgery and worst case scenario; if we have issues with both tackles God forbid... who will take over for Backus? Here are some FA's I thought of...
Jermon Bushrod - He didn't have the greatest season last year compared to 2009 but considering Carl Nicks is also a FA this year, he might be a bigger priority than Bushrod and the Lions could take a look once Free Agency starts next Wednesday.
It might not be as bad as what I made it out to be but sorry for having my hopes up after a decade of disappointment
