Tweet Stephen Tulloch

So it's been widely reported that Stephen Tulloch just tweeted he was mulling over some free agent decisions. So I, along with other POD members, say let's all tweet him some Lions love. A few of us have already got the ball rolling:

Natrone420 Nate DeRusha
@stephentulloch Here’s to hoping the D-cision you have to make involves Honolulu Blue and Silver

would love to see you in the D. Lions on the upswing. Gotta love that defensive line. Make a MLB's job much easier.

So I urge all POD members with Twitter accounts to tweet Tulloch to let him know how much we need him here. Show him the love and let him know he will be loved in Detroit.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Pride of Detroit or its writers. FanPosts are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable fans.

Despite the fact...

That I seriously think you’re trolling right now, let me hit you with some facts.

Stephen Tulloch over the past 3 years has started in 41 games, and played in all 48. He’s averaged 121 combined tackles PER SEASON, 3 passes defended per season (which isn’t great, I’ll admit). On average, he stops 41% of all passes thrown his way, stops 67% of all run plays that channel into him, and gives up an average of 3.03 yards per run play.
(This info was all obtained using Football Outsiders/NFL.com)

By comparison, Deandre Levy has missed 5 games over the past 2 seasons (-16% compared to Tulloch), averaged 78.5 combined tackles per season (42 less per season), has 4.5 passes defended per season (1.5 over Tulloch). On average, he stops 38.5% of all passes thrown his way (-2.5% compared), stops 73.5% of all run plays that channel into him (6.5% on Tulloch), and gives up an average of 3.25 yards per run play (.22 yards per play worse).

So, in closing, Tulloch is basically a carbon copy of Levy (our clear cut starter), only he’s less injury prone and a better tackler. I for one would NOT mind having 2 DeAndre Levy’s anchoring our Linebacking corps. 3rd LB doesn’t matter that much, as the 3rd LB typically comes out of the game in nickel packages anyways.

I rest my case. In Tulloch we trust.

by mrbusto71 on Jul 27, 2011 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

actually it is a avg of 95

and levy is trash so i dont know why you are comparing the 2.. not to mention they are 2 completely different kinds of LBs

and our LBs dont leave on 3rd

RIP KURTIS CHAIVRE

by det32 on Jul 27, 2011 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually

It’s an average of 121. 160 + 121 + 84 = 365.
365 (number of combined tackles over 3 years) / 3 (total number of years) = 121.6 repeating.

Your arithmetic lesson is now concluded.

Statistically speaking, Levy (over the past two years) is ranked as the 30th best LB in the league. He’s not elite, but he sure as hell isn’t “trash”.

Your logic session is now concluded.

A Nickel package in football is where you have 2 LB’s on the field, the Mike Back and the Sam Back. The 3rd backer in the formation (the weak side back) is removed and replaced with an extra corner, to aid in coverage. As a result, there ends up being 3 CB’s and 2 DB’s (Free Safety and Strong Safety) on the field. 3+2 = 5 DB’s, hence the term “Nickel” package. So yes, in a NICKEL package, we DO remove our 3rd a.k.a. weakside backer (which neither Tulloch or Levy are) from the field.

Your football schooling is now concluded.

by mrbusto71 on Jul 27, 2011 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

hey now

let’s not confuse the issue with facts

you lesson in being facetious is now concluded

excited about our LB corp

…but will we be too run heavy with Durant and Tulloch on the field? Both (especially Durant) appear to be liabilities in coverage. Durant played all over and mostly WLB from what I see but he seems more like a mike to me.

I anticipate 60-75% of our defensive snaps will be against the pass so OLBs who can cover are very important.

by x$pcents IV on Jul 28, 2011 9:58 AM EDT reply actions

possibly...

…but I think the mentality is that we will be able to rush the passer well enough that WR/TE/RB’s won’t be able to get behind our linebackers coverage. We’ve seen/heard it a lot out of Schwartz…don’t give up the big plays.
