Detroit Lions Sign Quinn Pitcock, Other Free Agents

We have already heard about a number of roster moves made by the Detroit Lions on Friday and earlier this week, and the team confirmed them in a press release that was just sent out. The team also announced quite a few signings we hadn't previously heard about, including the move to add defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock, who retired from the Indianapolis Colts in 2008 after one season in the NFL. He unretired last year and is now being given a chance with the Lions.

Here's the full list of signings/re-signings:

  • Lions unrestricted free agents: QB Drew Stanton, OG/C Dylan Gandy, S John Wendling, K Dave Rayner
  • Other free agents: WR Rashied Davis, DT Quinn Pitcock, LB Justin Durant, CB Maurice Leggett
  • Restricted free agents: FB Jerome Felton, DT Andre Fluellen
  • Exclusive-rights free agents: WR Stefan Logan, OT Corey Hilliard, LB Ashlee Palmer, LB Korey Bosworth, LB Caleb Campbell, CB Prince Miller, CB Paul Pratt, S Randy Phillips

The Lions also once again confirmed that WR Bryant Johnson and LB Jordon Dizon have been released, and the team said that OT Jeff Backus and CB Alphonso Smith have been placed on the active/non-football injury list.

There is some joy going around here for the slow breaking apart of the Vikings but other than that. They are not happy.

I have friends here, I almost feel bad for them. Then I remember last season and the shit storm of luck their team had ALL LAST SEASON!!! and I think, nope, F’em.

It has not reached combustion stage yet but they do have valid concerns. I think they are still hoping for some late FA action to patch some things up.

Remember last year?

When the Lions just settled on guys Johnathan Wade, C.C Brown, and Zack Follett to be STARTERS. Remembering that, it’s hard to be disappointed with the moves that the Lions are making so far. Wade was someone that the 1-win Rams didn’t even want as a backup, but he was brought here to be the answer at one of the starting CB spots. Brown was a back-up for the Giants that got pressed into duty for them, was notoriously bad, and then was booed out of town and not signed by anyone until late in the off-season when the Lions realized they needed a starting safety. Nothing against Zack, but he was promoted to the starting OLB spot by default when the Lions didn’t bother to acquire a starting linebacker after trading away Sims. Taking all of that into account, it’s nice to see the Lions addressing the positions of needs this year with legitimate talent… players that other teams were actually interested in, even if it isn’t the biggest names.

?????? huh????

Is that sarcasm? No seriously is that sarcasm? I think the Eagles have had the A++ of the FA period. You get rid of a QB who was going to cost some big money and he had like a small handful of starts, you get DRC and a second round pic. Then you go and get a QB who has a winning record to back up your starter, and get this he plays the same style of game. . . Then you get Babbins was a of the top 10 in sacks last year (I think) Then you add if not the best CB in the game then the second best CB in Nnamdi. . .If they get any kind of DT play they are going to be extremely tough to play against. . . And watch they are some how going to get at least 1 more 2nd round pick when they trade Samuals. They have to have used that extra 3 million on the cap this year.

How many lumps you want Doc?

I seem to recall being entirely unhappy about his play. If I recall Brees lit him up for 3 of his 4 tds on opening day. I do remember refering to him as ‘toast’ Buchanon, which is my standard name for poor cornerback play ever since someone coined ‘toast’ Westbrook, back in the day.

Who do you want out of the rooks to to 3 year pros that you want to surprise us and do well?

My vote is Caleb Campbell i really want to see something from him, great guy but want to see him break out of his shell

Alphonso Smith

He played pretty well last year, but dude definitely has the potential to be a #1 CB on a SB contending team, and has only been in the league for two years. Now that he has a year in our system under his belt, I’m hoping he can blossom into a beast.

8ish?

I bet he’s wanting something in the JJ range tho. I suspect Rogers wants the 10 range too.

He's also pretty fast for someone his size

For a TE anyway. We should line him up outside more and let him beat up on corners who are half his size

by WestsideLionsFan on Jul 29, 2011 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Ummmm ZWC

Grew (2009 1st rnd #20 overall) wasn’t the second fastest behind Davis (2006, 1st rnd #6 overall). He may have been second fastest of his draft class but it has to be someone else.

He will blow up if Stafford is healthy.

I love Shaun Hill but he struggled to push the ball downfield. Healthy Staff means destruction of Cover 2 with Sheff down the seam.

I was looking at stats from last year.

Ashlee Palmer was tied for leading the team in forced fumbles. Hope he explodes this year.

If Palmer explodes

A. We didn’t sign any other starting quality LB

B. Someone got injured

It would be nice to see him explode, but hopefully he’s a very effective special teams player and back-up this year, if you know what I mean.

I would not be surprised if they sit pat at this point

Eric Wright and Justin Durant is pretty much the Lions version of free agency. Besides, they like Palmer, and he’s only 24

I’d fine with it if they stay with FA as is allbeit I do want a couple of specific guys. I would be shocked if they don’t pick up a guy or two that are castoffs or gimme trade bait tho.

The way I see it

He’s either gonna spend the money on strippers or extra baby food. Knowing its Antonio Cromarite, that would be a HUGE help to the economy. Heck, we could have a new big three, Gerbers, Pampers and Magnums

I was at work when Asomugha signed, so I'll say this here instead of the other thread

I’m not the world’s biggest Eagles fan, but I’m happy that the Jets didn’t get him

I don’t think that even Tom Brady could pass against them.

My grandfather was a Packers fan, my father is a Vikings fan, I am a Lions fan, and there is no way in hell I am raising a Bears fan.
Oh, and I hate the Philadelphia Eagles (but like the Phillies)

Anyone else find it weird that Raiders TE Zach Miller hasn't been signed yet?

John Clayton just tweeted it and i was pretty shocked..also heard a report out of Tampa Bay that no one has given MLB Barrett Rudd any offers. What’s going on with these two?

by TheForceOfFollett on Jul 30, 2011 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

Definitely surprising

You would think at least one team out there would be willing to overpay for Miller. Countless teams are overpaying for much less talented guys.
