We Are About To Enter a New Phase of Free Agency

With the signing of Stephen Tulloch I feel the Lions are pretty much done signing free agent additions to the team.  The only possibility that remains is signing another starting caliber cornerback.  All of the remaining roster additions will be resigning guys that were with us last season.  I still expect to see Bobby Carpenter and Turk McBride back in a Lions uniform for next season.

Now that we are almost done with signing guys to the roster, we are about to see something that will be very interesting.  The teams will go into training camp and the coaches will decide who to keep on their rosters.  Remember that the teams are not really subject to the salary cap until the final 53 man rosters are turned in.  So the front office people will realize their team is over the salary cap and there will be some good players cut as cap casualties.  But are the Lions in a position to take advantage of them?

Star-divide

On first impression, the answer would be no.  But is that really true?  Let's examine a few moves that might put the Lions in position to make another impact signing out of the cap casualties.

The One For One Swap

There are still a few guys on the Lions roster that can potentially be upgraded.  The hypothetical I am going to put out there is having a premier center become available and the Lions are willing to trade salaries to get them.  Currently Dominic Raiola makes $2.4 million in salary.  There are also some bonuses to consider but those are counted as dead money if Raiola goes because the Lions still have to account for them on the salary cap.  It may be possible to structure a deal where the Lions can get a more complete center for that salary.  So you essentially make a one for one swap and then give raises in later seasons as some of the dead cap money comes off the books.

This option is very attractive because the Lions can upgrade the roster without a lot of fuss.  It is a pug and play type of move.  I am sure that there are other places where the same philosophy can be applied in order to improve the team, but Dom is the most obvious example.

Convert Depth to Draft Picks

Another possibility could involve the Lions trading away some of their depth at some positions in order to get draft picks in return.  This could apply to guys like Cliff Avril, Andre Fluellen, Corey Williams, Will Heller, and Dave Rayner.  There are probably a few more, but those names illustrate what I am talking about.  They are all players that have some value, but they can be compensated for on the roster if we lost them.

Let's use Cliff Avril as our example here.  I like Cliff but the strength of the defensive line places him in a difficult position.  Lawrence Jackson could step in and take his starting spot.  Jackson is stronger against the run and not much of a drop-off in pass rushing.  By moving Cliff you can probably get a fourth round draft pick, and with Mayhew, probably more. It is not an ideal return but it allows the Lions to dump some cap while still getting something in return when compared to just releasing somebody.

Keep in mind that a move like this is often better done by trading a player for another player to get full value.  The NFL overvalues draft picks compared to veteran players in trades, unless the player you are trading is a star.  The point of this discussion is to examine how the Lions can clear cap space to sign another guy that was a cap casualty, so I am limiting my discussion to that angle.

Making Room For Youth

In this scenario the Lions would release a guy that is older and has a higher salary and choose to go with a younger, cheaper player at the position. We see this done on teams throughout the league on a regular basis.

Let's return to the Dominic Raiola situation and assume that Dan Gerberry has been the plan to replace Raiola all along.  Gerberry has a very good camp and the Lions feel he is ready to take over the starting position.  So the Lions release Raiola outright to free up his $2.4 million salary and use that to sign a guy that plays another position.  I am not saying that this is the current situation with the Lions, it is just a hypothetical situation.

For the Sake of Discussion

So here is the point where we talk about which players that you feel the Lions can sacrifice under one of these scenarios.  I have given you some of my examples so let me know if you think there are others.  Remember that this is just about some armchair general managing and we shouldn't take anything that people say too seriously.  Just have fun.

Cliff is the outside speed rusher

Something LoJack is not I don’t see that happening. I also highly doubt the Lions will get rid of Dom either. If they were even considering it I would think they would be giving looks to roberto garza.

At the same level as Avril

No way. I get people don’t like Cliff but I just don’t think some people realize how important he is. Wille hasn’t played 5 or 10 pro snaps. Cliff has worked his ass off sense day one. I will gladly pay Avril against the unknowin project DE. Just saying I think its absurd to think Young is ready to take Avrils postiton as a pass rusher.

To me it is not just Young people are talking about.

You have McBride, LoJack, Young and Fullen. I would say if we recieved high compensation via picks, players or both, one might not be able to argue. Again this is all the what if game with un-named players and picks with invisable teams.

I do like Cliff, I also think cap space for CJ, Tull, Durant, Houston, McBride and Wright might also need to be taken into contention. I would rather see all them back if they perform well next year and of course some resigned this year. Toss in a 1st round pick next year to aim at a DB or Oline guy. Might be more important. I am thinking overall value for team. Again would have to be a damn good offer.

I agree

I also believe LoJack will improve his speed a ton this year. Why ??? Well with all the attention to our MLB and 1 DT’s, he will get a ton more 1 on 1 sets. He had that surgery on his knee or ankle, I believe ankle. LoJack said he could not really push off and go like he wanted too. I believe this will improve his running very much from the way he talked about it.

he had nothing but 1on1s last year...

nothing will change on that account. He’s primed to be a very good…replacement for KVB

i dont see them letting Cliff go

As he’s shown improvement each year, and seems to be a" pros’ pro"
The type of deal that would take to get him would look like where they tendered him, and I am not sure there’s a team willing to give that much. Imo
However, CW looks to be more of a candidate considering how much dt depth and dollars could be tied up in keeping him, plus he has value around the league.

I don’t know that Fuellen has too much value, not that he can’t play, but there could be similar unproven talents out there especially as cuts are made(btw, where’s Tommie harris?)
By the end of last season, I became pretty attached to all of them, and it’ll be sad to see some of them go if that happens.
Houge could be on the ps , and maybe mcbride gets a better offer elsewhere

I don't want Cliff to go.

I’m hoping that now we got all the flashy free agents and I thought I read Houston is signing up again, that we can spend a good chunk of the remainder to sign Cliff to a deal longer than 1 year. I’m hoping that’s why they were waiting on Cliff’s contract, just to see who bit in free agency. I’d like to think we were going to give him a deal all along, but just didn’t want to write it before a chance to sign the new shiny big guns.

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

Keep in mind this post is not really about Cliff Avril

It is about what you think the Lions can do to free cap space if a really attractive free agent becomes available because of a cap casualty. The Avril example was only one of many possibilities. You shouldn’t pin all your thinking on that. Think broader about the team and who might be expendable under the right conditions.

I would love it if the right center became available

I like consistency, and I know Dom makes great calls. BUt I want to run the Fing football! (and not have 300+ guys 4-5 yards in the backfield when Best gets it!)

I have to admit that I am a sucker for running the ball down the other teams throat.

There is nothing like getting the ball with about seven minutes left on the clock and just moving the chains as you drive down the field with rushing plays. Then you score the go ahead touchdown with about 12 seconds left on the clock and watch the other team feel helpless as you just took the game from them. The passing game is sexy, but the running game wins football games.

thelions will have cap room at theend of trainig camp and picking up a player cut because of cap proleam from his old team will not be aproleam . and hear why the lions have the etra 3 million in the cba and they may not have to all draft picks big contract s for this year mos t got 3or 4year deals so thier cap hit is not that big this year .also ithink the lions might cut one of thier wr licke maybe williams and your last year backup to best yes he played great last year for the lions but his cap nummber is big this year so he may be cut this year plus we have a gm who will macke sure we have money at the end of camp to pickup any bargins out thier .

I am not sure the Lions have much left now.

I am pretty sure they are just about tapped out from the numbers I have been looking at. I think that the only reason we had the money to sign Chris Houston is because Mayhew got Tulloch cheap. I am thinking that we have just enough money left to sign Carpenter, McBride and Avril. In fact, we might not even get all three of them back. Avril is obviously the priority. I place a little more value on getting Carpenter back than I do McBride although I would like to see all of them back.

Cutting Derrick Williams is worth $480,000 on the cap. Maurice Morris is $1.625 million savings if he is cut. A lot of people forget that you do not get all of the money back that a player would count against the cap when you cut them. Money that ihas been paid out in signing bonuses may still have future years scheduled from when it was prorated. That because listed as dead cap money and still counts against your salary cap. Currently the Lions have about $5.2 million tied up in dead cap from recent cuts like Julian Peterson and Bryant Johnson.

Could we

sign Kreutz to a FA contract and find out some stuff about the Bears offense?

yeah buddy!

by bighitter5 on Jul 31, 2011 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

The Lions probably understand the Bears offense better than most teams.

I am sure we have some old Martz playbooks laying around from back in the day. I have watched Kreutz for a long time now.and i have to admit that he has dropped off the last two or three seasons. He is still a good player, but he is not dominant like he was.

including the Bears. :)

Why?

why does it matter if the lions know their offense or not? The Bears offense last year was horrible haha, go look up the stats….they pretty much had zero offense….and why would anyone want to sign a guy who played on the line that led the league in sacks last year? haha

by Ryan Hart on Aug 1, 2011 4:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Outdated?

this article reads: “I still expect to see Bobby Carpenter and Turk McBride back in a Lions uniform for next season”. HAHA Well, I don’t expect Turk McBride to be in a lions uniform next season…I bet his contract with the saints would forbid that haha. As for Carpenter, they BETTER re-sign him…and more importantly, they need to sign Avril!!! People on here are talking like Avril is replaceable…he is NOT REPLACEABLE!! Avril NEEDS to be re-signed and I’m sure it will happen. You guys don’t understand exactly how good he is….let me tell you something…he is on record setting pace for his career…Cliff Avril has made 19 sacks so far in his 3 years…You guys know Michael Strahan, right?? He only had 18 sacks in his first FOUR years in the league!…and with the D-lineman around him only getting better, Avril will get MORE sacks. Remember…Cliff Avril got 8.5 sacks last year…he only played 13 games! Mathematically, at that rate he would have had ten sacks last year if he played all 16 games. so next year, with a better line, and entering the years closer to his prime….if he played all 16 games, he would rack in tremendous numbers. Not to mention, this line is young and will keep getting better and better for years to come. They need him back.
