Something other than Nnamdi.

Ok, enough of Nnamdi Asomugha, its not gonna happen, so shut up already! This may have already come up, but if it has, I missed it. Two years ago, we drafted Matthew Stafford with the #1 overall pick, Sam Bradford decided to stay in college. Let's say Bradford didn't stay, and Stafford and he were in the same draft.

Star-divide

With the number 1 overall pick, the Detroit Lions select... Fill in the blank, and I'm curious to know why.

At the time, I wanted Bradford, and after he played well last year, and Stafford got hurt again, I'm kinda leaning that way now. Don't get me wrong, I like Stafford, and I think he could be a hall of famer if he can stay healthy.

I like Stafford...

…but ask me again in a year.

This year is Stafford’s year to prove himself. I’m %100 Stafford until the end of the year. The way he’s played (when he wasn’t injured, of course) has earned him a pass from me for the year, but to get one for next year he’s gonna have to show up this year.

What about Josh Freeman? He WAS in Stafford’s draft and IMO I think has shown more promise than Bradford.

by UndaDawg on Jul 6, 2011 8:54 AM EDT reply actions

I thought about Freeman, but

The question was, what if Bradford came out that same year. Freeman did, and was drafted behind Stafford. But I do agree, I think I would consider Freeman over Bradford, but that’s now, then, in my mind, Bradford was the #1 QB.

Bradford stayed because he didn't want to play in Detroit

Stafford did. I’ll take the guy that wants to be here everytime.

Amen brother

Injuries or no injuries, the consensus seems to think (like us Lion fans) had Stafford never gottne hurt that they could’ve been 8-8 or better last year. This season the playoff talk seems realistic if Stafford stays healthy 16-19 games and the D-line plays lights out.

Stafford is the real deal, quite possibly a once in a decade kind of talent, I do not think Bradford, Sanchez, Freeman, or even Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan have this kid’s potential, but they all stayed healthy and that’s the only reason Stafford doesn’t get more credit.

2011 is the year of Matthew Stafford.

Stafford wanted to get paid who are you kidding.

Cause Staff and Dirty Sanchez both new they would be behind Bradford if they would have stayed that extra year. Bradford was the best of that class and he still is, I don’t care if we have Staff and he does go on to be a HOF player the right choice would have been Bradford then and it still is now. Yeah I can see Staff down there in Georgia saying man if I come out this year I can go play for the Lions who have not won jack shit in a decade, yeah quit fooling yourselves on that. Staff wanted to get paid and he did. I would still trade him for Bradford if I could today.

by davis0169 on Jul 6, 2011 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, thats easy to say now

But if Stafford puts up 35-40 TD’s and throws 4,000 yards to Bradford’s 20-25 and 3,000 yards, the Lions win bigger, better, and more than the Rams, you would be back bobbin’ Stafford’s knob. He’s had bad luck and hasn’t played much in 2 seasons, but nobody that knows anything about quarterbacks thinks Sam Bradford will become a better qb than Stafford.

Sam Bradford is a good qb and might go down as one of the better qbs in the NFL next season, but Stafford has the bigger arm and better offensive talent around him to become better than Bradford ever could be.

From 0-16 to the Superbowl baby!

by DLions4Eva on Jul 6, 2011 4:53 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Ummm WHAT

Put Bradford in this offense and you would see a guy throw for 5000 yards. Bradford knows how to lead a WR something Staff hasn’t yet mastered. Again Staff and Sanchez came out early to get paid they would not have been #1 overall is they had waited. That’s what I was saying and I stick to that gun. i’m happy we have Staff don’t misunderstand what I’m saying, but they both came out a year early because they both new they would get drafted after Sam.

Easy.....

Let’s not dub Bradford king of anything yet. He looked pretty impressive against Detroit, didn’t he? Kid looks good, but has a long way to go and there are a lot of missing pieces in St. Louis.

by DrewsLions on Jul 7, 2011 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree

Bradford does not go downfield. He was put in a very vanilla offense that was run first. Sam had one of the lowest yards per attemps in the NFL last season. That tells me he threw alot dump offs and safe passes.

I don't get this sentiment that Bradford didn't want to play for the Leos

Whoever’s picking at #1 is terrible. Period. He came in to a very lowly Rams team and took the reigns right away – why wouldn’t he have done the same here?

nonsense

that is not why Bradford stayed another year.

by x$pcents IV on Jul 7, 2011 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of the time when a player does stay

Its because of a commitment to finishing their education or because they think their draft status may be higher the next draft. Bradford might’ve wanted to finish school and maybe got wind of the Lions love for Stafford and then decided to stay. I think he did the right thing and is a great choice for #1 overall for the Rams. We got the best QB in 2009 and the best DT in the last decade or so in 2010 in addition. I think it was a win-win for everybody, Stafford was the clear cut best choice for #1 overall in 2009 and Bradford was in 2010.
I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Interesting question

I think Bradford stayed in college because he didn’t want to compete with a guy like Stafford for the number one overall pick. The two of them are completely different types of quarterbacks. Bradford to me seems like the ultimate WCO quarterback. Great accuracy, intelligence and size combined with solid arm strength. Stafford is more like a rifle, extremely strong, yet surprisingly accurate guy.

plus if you factor in his shoulder injury

One would think that Stafford would have edged him out.

Good comment

They are very different. I life Bradford’s ability to manage a game much better than Staff’s, but I also thought/think that Stafford’s style fit better with the mentality of our team (Schwartz just seems like a smart, but feisty guy who enjoys gunslingers..). Bret Favre and Elway have been among my favorites of all time (before Favre sold out…) for a reason: I love the way they played the game and I see 2 players currently who have a shot in stepping into their shoes 1. Cutler – though I don’t think he’ll ever be considered elite unless he’s surrounded by talent (aka, not in Chicago) and 2. Stafford – who really does have a shot here in Detroit to live up to a balls-out kind of playmaker…he’ll make some bad decisions here and there, but he’ll make the big plays you need to win games as well!

So, if I’m unbiased, I’d probably take Bradford, but for our team and my enjoyment watching the game – I’ll take Staff

Assuming both would play for detroit

Bradford, cuz he has plaeyed more games than stafford so far. but ask me again in a year. If stafford can stay healthy, its a different story but so far he has not so i will take bradford today

by Joel Korson on Jul 6, 2011 11:14 AM EDT reply actions

what i take out of this

i would have either guy what you guys forget Stafford was never injured in college college. same with Bradford on that point,if he went out the same year as Stafford, i don’t remember if Bradford was injured his junior year. it just who would of fit the system and i think Stafford would of because of the arm power and was able to connect down field with his WR. That would make Megatron a bigger weapon where he can break out as the best WR in the game. i would not mind Bradford either if we would of chosen him instead of Stafford not knowing Stafford got injured two years in a row.

by darth liam5 on Jul 6, 2011 11:38 AM EDT reply actions

haha i mean Bradford Sophmore year. also added another college in the first sentence silly me need to reread more carefully.

by darth liam5 on Jul 6, 2011 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

It's not so simple...

Straight up, skill set vs skill set…I personally would take Stafford over Bradford every time. And, the dislocated shoulder that cost Bradford his final year at Oklahoma would have been his rookie season with the Lions, and everyone would be calling him a china doll.
But lets look deeper. If Bradford comes out a year earlier, Suh doesn’t fall to us at number two because there was no other quarterback good enough to take ahead of him. So we would have been stuck with either McCoy or Okung (both of which were slowed considerably this year by injury as well).
In summation, THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN TO THE LIONS WAS SAM BRADFORD WAITING A YEAR TO ENTER THE DRAFT.
  Stafford + Suh > Bradford + McCoy

I think originally, Bradford didn't go back for his senior year and we drafted him.

That’s when Sam leaped into his girlfriend’s body. With the assistance of Al and some statistics from Ziggy, they convinced Bradford to stay in school for his senior year.

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

I wanted Stafford all the way

I remeber watching the Georgia v. MSU bowl game, and Stafford just took over in the second half. I remembering telling a friend, Detroit needs this guy.

To me Stafford is exactly what I want in a QB. There is just something about him when he is on the field. He has the “It” factor that I love. Matthew is a football player playing quarterback, while Bradford is just vanilla to me. Bradford might very well continue to improve and be a great NFL quarterback. But he does not inspire me with his play. When I see Stafford play, he reminds me of Farve or Elway. He is a gunslinger that loves to play football, and is going to do anything and everything he can to get a win. Bradford reminds me of Aikman. Very accurate and efficient. But he just does not excite me.

At the time

I would have said take Aaron Curry. But with knowledge now I would have taken Clay Mathews. Dude is a beast and it’s between him and Cushing as the best linebacker from that class. I mean I just looked up the first round from that year and there are quite a few duds I must say.

just pass me the damn ball

by Christopher Moriarty on Jul 6, 2011 1:44 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Clay is great, I'll give you that but....

Qb is a much more impactful position than Lb (if the guy is on the field). Plus there is no way we could know if Clay would translate his talents well into what the Schwartz wants from the Olb position. He’s a pure rush lb, we want the front four to create the pressure and have lbs defend run and drop back primarily. Clay benifits from that 3-4 he’s in. As far as Cushing goes, he kinda fell off after getting busted for peds……..or tumors……..or whatever that crap excuse was he gave.

Stafford all day

He just seems like more of a playmaker at the Qb position than Bradford does. When he isn’t hurt, he just seems to throw up Monster stats all the time. 5 tds against Cleveland Win. 4 tds against Washington Win. 3 tds(1 rushing) against Jets and we had a double digit lead on the big bad Rex Ryan D b4 he got hurt. I’ll take the more explosive guy and I think he’ll have a better career when it’s all said and done.

Tons of guys have stats like that every year,

But college stats don’t make you draft a guy #1 overall. There was a guy in last years draft, (can’t remember his name, he’s from Texas tech, or a&m or somewhere Texas) he had 40 something TDs, and kept his INTs down. Didn’t even get drafted, signed by Dallas as a unrestricted free agent. So Jimmy “Pickle boy” Clausin’s stats really mean nothing.
