Killer had an article on Mlive about Tulloch's one year contract. Here it is.
WOW......They took the article down on MLIVE. Very weird. Did anyone else see it?
The gist of the article was that we wanted a 3 year contact and he wanted a 5. We thought 5 was a bad value and they thought 3 was bad for them. So they settled on one. Seemed like we were the top choice the whole time. Clearly Drew RosenDICK was correct and we did NOT offer a 10 mil guarantee 5 year contract. Very interesting. Sounds like there wasn't much disagreement on the price of the yearly rate apparently. Who knows. Maybe more will come out. What we do know is that this is an interesting gamble by Mayhew. A low risk one. Worst case is that Tulloch absolutely blows up and can command an even bigger contact next season. We would loose about 2 mil per year in cap space and in return for that we would have the clarity and certainty that our money is well spent.
If Tulloch wants to leave for greener pastuers we can Franchise Tag him, or at the worst, we will receive a compensatory pick. If he has a big year it would probably be a 3rd. The only negative I can think about is whether Tulloch will feel a bit underappreciated. Should make him work harder in my opinion but some dudes don't work like that. Peppers played BETTER after his big money. Some guys just want to be loved.
In the end I can understand why a 3 year deal didn't make sense for him. Would have been perfect for us. But he doesn't want to be a FA at 29. No way he would get a 5 year deal. At 27 after 2 strong years he will get a solid 4-5 year deal. And if we are winning we may be able to get a hometown discount.
The fan in me wishes we would have locked him up long term so we don't have to worry. The inner GM can only marvel at Mayhew's brilliance. I hope we made the right move. I am a bit nervous.
update. I found the link.... I know I know I am horrible with links.
