Video: Ndamukong Suh Gives Andy Dalton The Jake Delhomme Treatment
During last year's preseason, Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh made headlines for throwing down Cleveland Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme by his head. Suh received a penalty for the hit and was later fined $7,500 by the NFL.
Last night against the Cincinnati Bengals, Suh did something similar to quarterback Andy Dalton. On the same end of the field as the hit on Delhomme, Suh came charging through the Bengals offensive line and grabbed a hold of Dalton's head after a pass had been thrown. Suh proceeded to throw down Dalton, who lost his helmet in the process. Take a look:
Suh was penalized for the takedown and can probably expect to be fined again. I'm not sure if it will only be $7,500 like last year or if it will be something more like when he received a $15,000 fine for his hit on Jay Cutler. Either way, it's a pretty good bet that there will be a FedEx envelope containing a fine in Suh's locker this week.

He's got deep pockets
And is a good guy off the field. And I love his tenacity. But with the NFL’s focus on keeping heads safe, Suh has to pay attention to where his hands are going. We don’t mean “tear the QB’s head off” in a literal sense, big guy.
yeah buddy!
Who wants to be the poor sap...
that personally hands Suh the fine?!?

hey, Suh's a bad ass
I don’t have a prob w/ these acts really. So long as they’re limited to what might look like an over zealous act. In the preseason, to me it seems more like an investment in intimidation and whats to come. ;) However, I hope these type of plays don’t become a problem for Suh. I’d hate to see him get dubbed “dirty”. And as far as I’m concerned about the cuttler hit…well… that was pure BULL PUCKY, a bunch of referee fixed bull crap. ;)
Suuuuuuuh!!!!
I would rather see ’roughness penalties then off sides, hold, or other “mental” penalties. Maybe other teams should be looking for better o linemen?
Even if he does quit literally ripping off QB heads (someone once told him he can make great soup with them), he still will get penalties, ala Cutler, just because he is Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuh!!!!!!!!!
$.02
Game on!
In my opinion, he's still young...
and yeah, he is gonna get penalties. I think he’s gonna get better though w/ experience and better discipline
You won't like those penalties so much if Suh gets a suspension as a result.
He has to learn to stay away from the head and hit lower. This isn’t a difficult thing to do. If he wants to crush a QB under his weight that’s fine. Grabbing around the head and pulling down is not fine.
so is this on sportscenter evry half hour like the delhomme hit?

Just not smart football
I know a lot of fans are excited by a competitive team and like to see some nasty out of them but this is not how it should be done. Ever. This is not the NFL of the 60s and 70s anymore. QBs basically have a red shirt on anymore. Like it or not, these are the rules of the game today and our team needs to play within them if we intend to be real competitors for the NFCN in the next few years.
Dalton saw Suh coming at him and tossed the ball at his outlet’s feet. How difficult is it to reach down and grab the QB around the chest? It is not hard. I promise.
If our team wants to show how tough we are, how much we have changed, Fine. Let the one stats that always counts do all the talking for us. The score board. A clean hit by Suh there does the exact same thing as this pointless dirty one with one small difference. The clean hit does not result in an automatic first down and 15 less yards to stop their drive.
Add in the other pointless PF and 15 more yards and its just stupid football. Do people realize that was the Bengals only scoring drive all game? We could have goose egged them if not for those two stupid penalties.
Preseason or not. Completely shutting down the other team on the score board is the best message this team could have sent.

Meh
It is preseason and it happened right after a couple cheap blocks by the Bengals. I think it was a “ok, you guys want to play rough? Lets play” kind of thing rather than him not knowing how to tackle.
But Suh reads these pages, I’m sure he is thanking you for the tips on how o wrap up the QB.
Are you talking about the two run plays before Suh's stupid penalty?
The one where he was pushed seemingly 5 yards deep into his own defense back field when he was basically erased from the run defense?

Well yeah, i even said in the game thread I thought that was a Crack back block. He did not get in front of Delmas. In fact, Delmas never saw him coming. That is the definition of an illegal block.
That said, I think Suh’s bottle capping of the Ginger QB (I really like the kid and think he has potential but that nickname is going to stick) happened before that play.

I definitely see your point, and agree.
But how many penalties and fines did Suh draw last year? A handful at most?
If it takes that to keep his intensity, I’m all for it. It sucks for safety and all that, but to be 100% honest, I don’t watch football to see guys kept safe and uninjured. I don’t wish anything bad for anyone, but if Suh smokes Aaron Rodgers on a late hit and takes him out of the game or something…. I’m not gonna say I would be all that upset.
I guess that speaks more on my character than Ndamukong’s though…

you know he didn't deserve the one on Cutler or Barber...
The Dis-Assembly Line - The unofficial, official name for the next best D-line in football.
well, they were both borderline
but I also look at them as situations where he could have done a small thing different and been just as nasty while well within the rules.
The Cutler hit for example. If he just wraps him up from behind with those massive arms of his and drives him into the ground, who knows if Cutler gets back up and the likely hood of a penalty drops a ton.

Outrageous
Both of those hits were COMPLETLY legal.
In regards to Barber. The NFL ruled that hair hanging out of your helmet is considers part of your uniform, so you can be tackled by it exactly the same manner as if the defender had grabbed your jesery. This was cleary a horrid call, unexcusable.
As for Cutler play, there was no contact to Cutler’s helmet, therefor NO PENALTY. Now in the moment at game speed I truly understand the flag. The fine was completly outrageous.

That "forearm shimmer"
excuse was bull crap. Wth is a forearm shimmer? It sounds like they pulled that out of somewhere. I disagree with the Barber call, too, if the rule states that hair is part of the uni. However, Suh’s reputation is one that will make some of the more questionable hits go against him, imo. There is probably a way for him to clean that up a little and still be as effective. If he can get to the qb w/out getting a penalty, he can sack him w/out one, too.

Dirty is really the only word to use to describe Suh grabbing Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton by the head, knocking off his helmet and viciously slamming him to the ground. Suh got the Lions a 15-yard penalty, and he’ll also likely get fined by the league office.
Maybe I’m just being a homer, but I dunno man…

dirty
is not the correct word. Undisciplined. Over agressive. Misconduct…sure. “dirty” – no, just no. He actually didn’t rip Dalton’s helmet off, it popped off by the contact/collission, the only thing he shouldn’t have done on that play is throw Dalton to the ground (I don’t believe Suh knew for sure that Dalton got rid of the ball when he first hit him…)

Haha your quote reminds me of one of a good one from Happy Gilmore:

What does he play at? 285-290 lbs?
He is going against 320+ lbers on a regular basis in the 3-4 defenses. The game has evolved past his skill set.

He had no idea if the guy still had the ball. Not to mention there was no lift and slam motion, just a big man putting a little man to the ground. People need to stop being such pansies. This is the NFL, which used to stand for Not Fucking Ladies. Anymore I don’t know about that. IMO anyone that things this was a dirty or overtly illegal hit definitely wears panties. Yeah Evil I'm in the same boat.
this is the first time in my lifetime that we have a defense that is FEARED, and I see teams like the Steelers and Ravens who for years have had those kinds of D’s and always wished we had something like that. Now we do and some of you guys are crying foul? What ever, girls. If we have to take a few 15 yards penalties to get some respect from other teams then I’m fine with it. It’s those neutral zone infractions that are the ones the piss me off more than anything.

Completely agree with smurf
we can not know for sure if Suh knew Dalton had already released the ball. In my examination it looks like he thought he still had it in his hands. Also, Suh never grabbed onto Dalton’s helmet, it just popped off!
I’m incredibly excited with the aggression and enthusiasm Suh and the rest of the squad plays with. I don’t think they have bad intentions or look to play outside the rules of the game. The truth is: the zebras just may see Suh as a “dirty” player already and it’s unfortunate!

Considering the hand he got in the facemask before bursting through the oline, not to mention the grabbing of SLH
I have to agree ; I love him, glad he’s a lion. We don’t need dumb penalties (looked like he did extra after ball was gone) I like the aggressiveness and idea he will be feared. IMO the refs don’t know what to make of his beastliness so they’ve called at least two flags on what looked legal, which will make him more of a target on borderline hits and hurt his rep

I'm not gonna say that Suh is a dirty player but...
A reputation could be starting to surround him. Last year, the hit on Delhomme had some people talking dirty as well as the Cutler hit. The hit to Cutler was bull and most fans gave him the benefit of the doubt with Delhomme. As a Lions fan, I love the intensity Suh brings, but if this happened to Staff you can bet this place would’ve gone crazy. As Lions fans, we are blinded by our homerism. A reputation as a “dirty” player will just get him more penalties due to refs not giving him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think Suh is a dirty player and he is a nice and well liked guy irl, but he has to watch for the reputation around him.

To be honest,
I couldn’t tell that Dalton’s helmet was off when he stood up
My grandfather was a Packers fan, my father is a Vikings fan, I am a Lions fan, and there is no way in hell I am raising a Bears fan.
Oh, and I hate the Philadelphia Eagles (but like the Phillies)
I like the aggressiveness
But the result was concerning. Penalties such as that one can be very detrimental, and I’d prefer if he limited them. Don’t get me wrong, I wanna see Suh light up QB’s and RB’s, I’d just rather he smack em in the body.
Over the top
Those penalties will just keep on comming until he wises up to what is and isn’t allowed.
How long is it going to be before he really hurts the TEAM and his wallet with a SUSPENSION?
The more I watch it,
the less dirty it looks. Dalton still had the ball when Suh got there. Suh grabbed him under the arm and by the jersey at his shoulder. The helmet just flew off, Suh didn’t tear it off like the Delhomme hit. Then he completed his tackle, how many times a game does a QB get knocked on his butt just after getting rid of the ball? That’s the right way for a lineman to finish that play. If your coaching a D line and the QB still has the ball, releasing it or not, you tell them to finish the tackle.
Case in point, a few years ago, I believe it was the Browns vs. the Steelers, one of the Brown’s D linemen had Ben wrapped up, but he assumed Roethlisberger had released the ball, so he let up and didn’t complete the tackle. Ben had not thrown it away. He had pump faked and still had the ball. He ended up breaking free of the defender completing a pass for a good gain.
I’d rather Suh and everyone on the D-line play with that aggresivness all year rather than tip-toe around rules to protect the QB.
I don't want Suh to change a damn thing
I am, however, worried about some douche on the Offensive line getting sick of being burned and going for his knees. But, again that is no reason for him to change his style of play,
Is this what you wanted?
Is this what you had in mind?
Is this what you wanted?
'Cause this is what you're getting.
I would not worry too much, we have enough bad asses to back each other up out there
In fact, in some ways Suh’s hit might have been retaliation for J. Simpsons illegal helmet to helmet crack back block on Delmas. I also wonder how the refs missed the face mask on Best and the horse collar later on on Brown.
Same old shit, Lions get screwed by the refs, thankfully we are good enough to win against the 12th man in zebra stripes this year. I watch a lot of football, and I can say that I remove my bias and watch a lot of games where I have no stake in it at all. Needless to say that the Lions in general get screwed pretty hard by officiating lately. Some other teams I have noticed similar calls on though it seems to only last a game for them, not an entire season or multiple seasons like it does with us.
Lets face it, don’t worry about Suh having a rep as a dirty player, he already does. So does Fairley, and Delmas and Tulloch and and and. Ironically the other team that I seen get shafted a lot by the refs was the Titans. I guess only the Ravens and Steelers are allowed to play physical football and the Jets can outright play dirty and not get called for it. Maybe I am grasping at straws, but I honestly do see a team bias when I watch games. Just my opinion, hopefully this year we at least break even on the bad calls, but I would not count on it.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!

I don’t care if he has a “dirty player” rep as long as he’s smashing opposing QBs. Yes the penalties can add up but so does the intimidation and the pain.
Go Lions!
First time poster
here on Pride of Detroit, Usual post on battle red blog, being as Texans are my team however the Lions are my definite 2nd favorite team haha. anyways, Suh is not from this planet he is a beast and this call is justified but he is not a dirty player. He didn’t see that his helmet flew off he was just finishing the tackle.
people need to stop whining about Suh
Suh is the man. That tackle he did wasn’t even that dirty. It just looked dirty cause even the QBs helmet was afraid and started running from Suh. He threw him to the ground after the ball was released…that’s roughing the passer, but it’s not attempted murder. Besides, I like that Suh tries to hurt the QB even for no reason. It means that every time the Lions play, the QB will most likely be scared shitless that Suh might come along and rip their head off for no reason whatsoever, and that throwing the ball away isn’t going to save them from the hit one bit. At this point in pre season is the time to put that message out because the wins don’t matter. Suh is going to intimidate the offense, football is 90 percent mental….remember that.
I know its just preseason but . . .
