why

so many injuries, just our luck

by melq155 on Aug 14, 2011 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

It could definitely be worse

despite the number of Lions injured right now, it still looks like the only one that’s gonna miss any significant amount of time is LeShoure, so we actually should feel somewhat lucky. I would much rather have all of these guys dealing with minor injuries before the season starts then have them happen mid-season and miss games.

having

a injury now doesn’t mean they get spared by the football gods later in the season. they can still have them then too, unless their current injury has then sit out till midway through the season.Bottom line there is a whole lotta injuries and that’s not a good way to start a season.

Injuries in preseason

Teams are always more cautious in the preseason I guarantee that if this were a regular season week several of those players would be practicing plus this is the first practice of the week so some guys are probably just getting an extra day to recover.

quit being negative

Like someone already said, these guys are sitting out because of very minor injuries only because it’s preseason. There is no reason to have a guy go out and practice even if they have a hangnail in preseason. Now is the time they can rest if they have a minor ailment. Relax.

by hintsas on Aug 14, 2011 10:35 PM EDT reply actions

Agree

Most of the injuries are nothing to be worried about. They might as well rest the starters now because they’ll be in full swing in 3 weeks.

Nothing major...

On a positive note Backus will be back before preseason ends and Petti and Berry are back in the mix.

can't wait to see if his trimming has paid off!

A more athletic Grew=nightmares to the rest of the NFC IMO!

The REAL Problem is...

articles keep things sounding way worse than they actually are. Making fans get freaked out. Like when they talked about Nick Fairley injured…they made it sound like he’ll be out all year. THey keep saying the word “injury”…a bruised shoulder doesn’t count as an injury in my opinion haha, on my high school team they started a defensive tackle with two torn MCLs. He came out looking like a peg leg and was loaded on painkillers every day.

by Ryan Hart on Aug 15, 2011 4:56 AM EDT reply actions

I agree

folks freaking out over nothing. Preseason injuries are nothing, if someone has a booger hanging, they will sit him at practice.

Yeah

Like all that overblown hype about a “ruptured Achilles tendon” on LeShoure. I expect him to play by week 2.

by ATL Lion on Aug 15, 2011 9:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know about that one. haha

They’re saying Leshoure isn’t going to play all season. But really, why does that matter anyways? If Jahvid Best got injured I would be more upset haha

by Ryan Hart on Aug 15, 2011 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Injuries

I am more concerned with the total lack of running room any of our running backs were faced with then I am with the minor injuries. Barry Sanders would have had trouble finding any room to run on Friday night.

by Karras62 on Aug 15, 2011 10:18 AM EDT reply actions

yup

that’s the concern. Usually we run pretty decent in preseason though and come regular, there’s nothing! For what it’s worth, Schwartzy said you have to work on run blocking and the timing for RBs and that they haven’t got a chance to do too much of that in camp as of yet…

What i expect:

Jahvid Best will not play in game 2 of the preseason, so we can get a look at some of these other guys with the 1st team o.. There really is no reason for him to play in all 4 preseason games anyways.

- Calvin wil also no play imo.

by hintsas on Aug 15, 2011 10:37 AM EDT reply actions

He'll play

but I agree he won’t play all 4. I see him in the 1st 2 series on Fri and then sitting out the Bills game (like last year)

What really “grinds my gears” is that i saw titus out there throwing to receivers in warm ups and walking around with no hobble or anything, but yet this “hamstring” injury seems to be killing him.Idk just early speculation but im not buyin in to his injury he seemed fine.

by Michael21 on Aug 15, 2011 10:46 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah,

It’s probably not all that bad, maybe just a little nagging and they dont want to risk him pulling it or tweeking it anymore until it’s 100%

by hintsas on Aug 15, 2011 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Like its been said before, this is just preseason, they are resting people so there are no chances of turning minor injuries into something big. Besides, training camp in the NFL isn’t the same as high school football; the players don’t go there to condition, they go to learn routes, plays and technique. Sure it would be better to actually run the plays, but I’m sure all the injured are spending most of their time looking at film and becoming more intelligent football players.

by letelenny on Aug 15, 2011 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

yes

they said T.D has been very active, out there with th eguys, taking mental reps and studying…all that stuff is very important right now seeing they didn’t get a rookie mini-camp or any OTAs (when they would have learned that stuff). He doesn’t have a big role right away, so I see him being ready come TB…

He doesn't throw with his hammy

What are you worried about? That he is faking it? That he is such a bust that the coaches gave him a made up injury to keep him from seeing time in a preseason game?

by ATL Lion on Aug 15, 2011 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I dont think he’s faking it but from where i was sitting i could see his face and when he was "jogging"to get off the field i didnt see a whole lot of pain in his face or sign of a limp.Just giving my input on it not trying to ruin your morning.Watch titus will have a breakout season and ill look like an idiot..Doubt it but i hope he proves me wrong.

by Michael21 on Aug 15, 2011 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

It's not usually forward strides that'll aggravate the hammy.

So much as it’s lateral jukes and hard running. I wouldn’t be too worried.

by Mavyrk on Aug 15, 2011 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank you for not throwing out some rediculous diatribe about how I’m wrong for questioning him! appreciate it, i really hope for the best with every player on our team I just have a bad feeling about him.

by Michael21 on Aug 15, 2011 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

If you notice

most of the projected starters are the ones sitting out a practice here and there. Does anyone really think that Megatron will benefit from playing in another preseason game? Or that Pettigrew missing the first preseason game will hurt him when the real games begin? The players I can see benefitting from these glorifying practices are- Stafford (still have questions about his ability to take a hit), the #4-5-6 receivers (who is it gonna be), running backs (filling LeShoures shoes), Jahvid Best (getting used to Stafford in game situations), the offensive line back-up’s (gotta find out who to keep), and the LB corps (who will play where and what are their tendancies). The secondary is still fighting it out for starting spots, but those are going to work themselves out against CJ in practice as well. I mean, if you can cover Megatron you can probably cover any other receiver in the league, right?

In the next preseason game, I’ll be looking at how the defense does against the run. The Browns have a battering ram for a back (who I’d love to have to replace LeShoure by the way) in Hillis that will go a long way in telling how the Lions run defense will be built. If Cleveland targets a specific area to attack the defense, we know where to start fixing the problem. If they start running at Avril and the LB on that side isn’t able to contain the run, then they will have to try a different combination to get the job done.

As far as the Titus Young injury, here’s what I see-
If you have a weapon that can take the top off the the defense, and you have a proven threat on the other side- do you want other teams to have film on the new weapon for a glorified practice? I would guess that some of the practices that are held indoors or are not being covered by the media have BumbleBee catching passes from Stafford. This isn’t the Millen days anymore where nothing was secret and everyone knew every move the Lions were making. This is the 007 regime with Mayhew, Schwartz and Lewand at the helm. Secrets are kept, and conspiracy theories are accepted as truth. I would NEVER play poker with any of these guys. Case in point- Stephen Tullock & playing chicken with his agent Rosenhaus. When everyone thought the deal was dead in the water and that Barnett was on his way, they sign him to a 1 year deal at a fraction of the cost he was asking. Don’t fret about BumbleBee. He’ll be fine in the first game. Staff will get him the ball within the first 5 plays and he will score in the first quarter. jmho

nice comment

agree on the importance (or lack thereof) for the respective players and positions. Battles are really whats important for these games. Grew and CJ will be in tip top come TB without any pre season games IMO. I’m mostly interested in the run game on both sides of the ball and figuring out the 4 and 5 spots for WR

Not to be a smart@$$

but we all have groins. It’s like saying that a player has knee or an ankle. The coaches, trainers, players, and management are going to give as little information about injuries as possible.

Here’s the question I’d ask- Do you think that Eric Wright will be ready to go as a starter opposite Chris Houston in week 1 against Tampa Bay? Any answer other than yes indicates a more serious injury and should cause concern. The starting corners will be Houston & Wright, with Berry, Vasher, and Smith as the additional corners in nickle and dime coverage.

by Detroitfantc on Aug 15, 2011 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

doesn't sound serious right now

could even play in the Cleveland game for a series or two – but the big risk with “a groin” is how high the risk of re-injury is…so if it’s not given the proper rest to heal and then strengthen, it could pose problems for the rest of the year. But obviously it wasn’t a very bad groin pull, because he went back onto the field after a couple plays to trying and play through it…if it was a bad groin pull, he wouldn’t even be walking around much at all…

the fact he went back out was encouraging.

I’d probably be ok with him sitting out this weeks’ game unless he feels absolutely fine by Wednesday.

shite

those can be real bad (evidence: Del and Levy last year). CBs cannot sustain those if they’re bad…
