Detroit Lions Training Camp: Injuries, Injuries, Injuries
- WR Calvin Johnson missed practice again due to his bruised shoulder.
- CB Eric Wright suffered a groin injury today and was unable to continue practicing. Fellow CB Chris Houston was unable to practice at all after hurting his groin on Sunday. Neither injury appears to be serious, though.
- DT Corey Williams rolled his ankle and had to leave practice early. His injury is not considered serious either.
- QB Drew Stanton returned to practice after sitting out on Sunday because of stitches in his right elbow. He had to have them after a helmet punctured his arm on Friday against the Bengals.
- WR Demario Ballard is the latest Lions player to be seen wearing a walking boot. He joins OT Jason Fox, who just got his cast off for a walking boot.
- CB Alphonso Smith was "running and cutting hard before practice," according to Chris McCosky. Hopefully that means he will return to practice soon.
- It seems OT Jeff Backus also may be returning soon.
- Also according to McCosky, WR Derrick Williams had three drops during practice. That's not a good sign for a player fighting for a spot on the team, especially after he dropped a couple passes against the Bengals.

to bad for d. williams
dropping passes like that isnt going to keep you here, he was realy looking good too.
these injuries are ridiculous, we have soft players or tough schwartz?
Williams
Had thought he would be out from the beginning.
He’s making it easy on the staff for cuts.
Expectations don't produce!
He sure is.
Doesn’t look good for Ballard either. Didn’t see much of him against the Bengals. An injury now won’t help.
May of just opened the door for Nate H...
but wouldnt count him out just yet.

This is ok with me
As long as we get the injury bug over with before the real hitting begins.

Its
not a flu, its not like it can run its course and be done. Its a shame ballard got injured i was hopin he could replace d-will
huh?
He didn’t get ONE pass thrown his way during the game….lol… he was practice squad the whole way.
I Agree
I agree he’s practice squad material and I think he’s not being thrown at on purpose. Schwartz knows he’s not going to make the 53 man squad so why show the rest of the league what you seen in this kid?
No, it isn't the flu,
it is, imo, a consequence of this years lockout.
Did you guys see the size of that chicken?

Damn we had better break out the flags and Nerf's
at least for practice’s.
How many lumps you want Doc?
to me this sounds like alot of everyday nicks and cuts that management are just being safe with
…. i would bet alot of people have broken bones in their foot and hand and did not even know it.. i mean small hair line ones. My girl friend was walking around in heals with a broken foot and was complaining about “my heals hurt”… then come to find out she had a hair line fracture…. then again she doesn’t have to carry 300 Lbs… just 112 lol.
Don't ya know....
Were keeping DWill on the roster as trade bait.
Teams are just lining up for 5th recievers that have the droppsies and hasn’t been able to prove himself as a return
man.
Probably get a 4th for him….lol
Sarcasm is now off.
Please cut this roster spot waste and inject someone with some upside please.

amen
that 2nd drop in the Bengals game was unreal. I feel bad for the guy, but he can’t get it together!

That wasn't even a drop.
It kind of has to be in your hands to count as a drop. It doesn’t count if it’s in your grill.

Lockout
is having its effects already. All the small little naggy injuries. Happens every year to some extent, but to this extent?
USE THE SCHWARTZ!!!
Incredible
On friday it looked like he was having the hardest time just getting himself under control to even think about making the catch

Man, I'm going to beat this dead horse until he's the F off of this team, either cut or....heaven help me.....
Traded?……lol…..Mayhew would have to stifle a laugh if he got anything for this stiff.
We draft him as a 3rd receiver-can’t do that.
We figured he would immediately step in as a returner-He brain farted his way out of that spot. Were forced to bring in Logan(not complaining just saying) who I would rather have anyway.
Were forced to draft TY to fill the role DW was supposed to fill 3 years a go.(I’d rather have TY)
Okay, as a rookie they all deserve a pass, as a 2nd year player you better start to show a little, at least with your legs, well shit he can’t even do that due to his head and hands.
Now year 3 he still can’t hang on to the ball? We don’t need that type of stuff any longer on this rising team. The ONLY reason DW makes this team this season is due to contract considerations which would be a crime, and a complete waste of a spot to develop another receiver.

Besides, I have 20 bucks riding on this with Gyorick.

I think it was the Chiefs a few years ago
that did this drill where the player would be sitting in a port-a-john and they swing the door open and rifle a pass to them. Sounds funny, but from what I remember it helped

Bummer about D Will
I am rooting for him to turn it around and step up. So far he’s one of Mayhew’s only bad picks.

Williams is a turd...
He’s making Bryant Johnson look like Rice. Cut this guy please! Between Davis and Ballard I think we can handle him dropping passes somewhere else.
Williams is crap.
He had his chances. Give a younger, sharper player his slot.

I would love to see
an NFL CB attempt bump-and-run coverage against C-Will. Hilarity would definitely ensue.
Derrick Williams, to be sure. Come on now.
I think we all know Corey Williams has done a fantastic job.

I was just sayin man.
He is the older of the two, with the “younger” crack I couldn’t tell if you were making a sarcastic joke or talking about Wheelz.
True, I gotcha.
I never wanna dump on a Detroit Lion, but I just feel like the team’s passing him by. If you can’t catch in practice, what’s the percentage that you’ll be catching come game time?

The scariest part
is that D-Will getting cut makes it more likely that Rashied Davis (aka ‘Dropopotamus’ to Bears fans) gets the 4th WR spot.

Wouldn't get too worked up yet..
I think a lot of the injuries, like a few other people said, are just your typical daily bumps and bruises that are common in football, but being that it is pre-season there’s no real good reason to make yourself play through them just yet. Like another comment said in one of the other posts, I’d be willing to bet that if this were regular season a lot of these guys would just push through them. Obviously a break / fracture / tear is one thing, but bruises and pulls and some sprains are just GOING to happen. Its like canoeing, its not a matter of IF you’re going to get wet, but WHEN you’re going to get wet. -- Any news on whether they are going to air Friday’s game at 7:30? checked Fox 17 (Kalamazoo, MI) and it looks like they are showing it on tape delay again at 11:00 pm Friday, just wasn’t sure if anyone else knew of a station showing it earlier?
Here's my post from 5 things from the bengals game... # 5 was right on target : )
I’m game 1) Lions win
2) Stafford throws a TD to CJ
3) Harrison will get alot of carries
4) Stanton will look great
5) D-Williams will still be horrible
Along with 1, 2, and 4
Brown did pretty great but he always does in preseason
by Liontotheextreme on Aug 15, 2011 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions
A Brown looked great in the passing game
Not so much in the running game. 1 run for 17 yards, 3 runs for 4 yds. We already have a RB who is pretty good at catching outlets.
Yes mckeeper
but do you really expect Brown to break a 15-20 yd run every 4 carries? Not realistic.
I think Schwartz
needs to start making everyone do yoga. They should all be like pretzels by the first game.

I agree
Then again I read a quote, I can’t recall from whom, at the start of camp. It was from someone on another team who had gotten hurt early. He said something to the effect “here I did a lot of yoga in the off season to be ready and here I get hurt fast, i guess that lady took her money and ran” lol

Some teams bring in dance instructors
They really know how to do stretches.
I was on a hockey team that had a similar situation
She was this hot girl in a leotard, and that girl freakin’ KILLED me!
Leg lifts, wall sits, stretches…
I was always like “can’t we just go do wind sprints?”
I seriously would’ve rather went outside and ran indian sprints or suicides for 2 hours than go do that stuff with her!
(she WAS hot, though.)

DW needs to get it together....
Ballard is more than likely hitting the PS for now. You still got Toone Stovall and my favorite Hughes trying to make this club, i havent really heard much about Toone anybody got something on him.

Only thing I've heard about Toone
is that he showed up in better shape this year then he did last year. Doubt it will help him make the roster, but we’ve got three preseason games left, so who knows.
Thats true but the third game pretty much will be hog d by the first unit.
hope to see something from the guy but my dark horse is Hughes…
" Maybe for a writer...but i am sure most of you can tell i am not a writer". det32
The only thing I have heard on toone
is the break away he had in the last scrimmage (aka exehibition (aka preseason)) game.
He had his guy beat, Stanton rocketed the ball past him. A little more touch on the throw and it was a TD. The kid has some skill. The real question, is he going to get a chance to show any of it?

Having less and less confidence in D Will
Which was pretty low in the first place. I don’t see him making it.
Yup. Definately time to cut the guy.

Who is our conditioning coach?
He should be held accountable. Other teams aren’t seeing anywhere near the amount of injuries the Lions are. I don’t think it’s just bad luck…
historically I agree.
Conditioning has never been a strength (no pun intended) here in Detroit.
