Thoughts on our Lions

Hey PoD, here are my thoughts on a few of the topics that have been discussed.

1. Suh's hit was in no way dirty, or even worthy of a penalty, let alone a fine. Being able to man-handle another grown man like a rag-doll is simply a matter of strength. He did not grab him by the helmet, nor twist him around and toss him down in the way that is being talked about. He had Dalton wrapped around by the shoulder, and threw him down. Yes, I do agree it looks brutal, and I am sure it felt that way to Dalton, but there was nothing wrong nor illegal about it. Helmets come off, it happens, especially when there are two people hitting one (in this case, the bengal that Suh banged Dalton into).

2. While the injury to Mikel sucks, and all of the others seem to be overwhelming, I don't see any (other than Mikels) as significant in anyway. Some of these new groin injuries concern me, as that can be one that effects an entire season until a long rest period is possible to recover. But at this time, not so much, especially with people that their spots on the roster is already known, even a simple tweak of an injury puts them on the bench until it is gone this early in the season, as it should be.

3. Staying on that, the injury to Nick sucks, but I think that has more to do with us as fans than it does the Lions as a NFL team. C-Will is the clear starter. There is a reason we have seen teams run right, and will continue to do so, running toward Suh and Avrils side. This enables teams to both double team Suh, and overload that side with a TE or/and a reciever or back. The converse of that, is running left, towards C-Will and KVB, with 2 blockers instead of 4 (well 3.5). If they decide to run left doubling C-Will, they would need to shift the TE/reciever blocker over, and the backers/safeties need to shift over. If they choose not to double the DT they are running at, well thank you, and good luck with that.

4. On our backers stopping the run, it was hard to tell from the angles provided in the broadcast, but in the plays that I could see in watching the game 3 times, I think they are just getting used to things. It looked a few times in the handful of plays that they were a bit hesitant, you hear this often, but I think it applies in this case, and that would be addressed with experience.

5. Spivey, props man, the tackling is impressive.

6. D-Wheels, I feel terrible but he still can recover. On both drops in the game, he was clearly ahead of himself and lost his balance, especially the second one (ever tried to catch something when you were falling down). He is certainly someone trying to overcome confidence issues. Note to him, ignore anything people say, and do what you grew up doing.

7. Last item, but I think it is important. I like the changes to the kickoff rules. I think it spreads out the risk/reward value of returning a kick. There are kickers out there that can kick it out of the back of the end zone, that is granted. Teams have to pick now if they want to elevate the kickoff and try to keep the opponent deep in their zone, or just kick it out and give them them ball at the 20. I think this clearly favors the shorter distance kickers such as "Old Man Hansen" as opposed to S-Jaz from the Raiders who could already kick it into the first row. I think it will also enforce the ST coverage teams.
