Grade Martin Mayhew - August 2011

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has received an A grade every time Pride of Detroit readers have been asked to evaluate his performance. The only thing changing from one poll to the next is how many votes for an A grade Mayhew is receiving. The numbers have been increasing each poll, and I have a feeling they would go up even more after the moves made in the last week.

To change things up a bit, I decided to break the letters down and include more options in this edition of Grade Martin Mayhew. You can now choose to give Mayhew a perfect grade of A+, decide that he is only a little more than average with a B- or opt for one of the many other selections.

Which overall letter Mayhew receives probably won't be too interesting, but I will be interested to see how the votes are spread out. That will reveal just how good (or bad, I suppose) of a job you all think he is doing, and it will generate more discussion than the A vote simply running away with the poll yet again.

So, make sure to vote in the poll below and leave your thoughts in the comments. If you are interested in my thoughts, they are after the jump.

Star-divide

I have given Mayhew an A in polls like this in the past, and even though there are more choices, I'm sticking with an A grade for him. I did consider going with an A+ based on how much promise there is for next season, especially with the moves Mayhew made last week, but I'm not ready to hand out a perfect grade just yet. I do think Mayhew's moves over the last few years have put the Lions in position to be something special, which is why I gave him an A. Before I hand out an A+, however, I do need to see some on-field results. Hopefully in a few months I will have no problem doing just that. For now, though, I'm sticking with an A grade.

A-

i liked what he did overall and it look like we are going to have a promising season but until we make playoffs that when he get an A in my books. Then if we win the Superbowl that an A+ for sure. what he have done making a non talent team to a team that could contend for a playoff spot is big just i want to see it on the field before i give out an A.

by darth liam5 on Aug 2, 2011 11:08 AM EDT reply actions

I gave a B+

My reasoning is this; I love what he did with the LB spots. He turned a weakness on this team to a strength. I wish we would of replaced Houston but he is decent and with the addition of Wright we should have a decent secondary. The reason I gave a B+ over an A was I wasn’t too thrilled about losing Turk Mcbride. I feel that we lost a real good rotational guy. I also didn’t give an A because we have yet to ink Avril to a longer deal.

Solid A-

I agree lets “ink Avril to a longer deal.” resign Carpenter. maybe get one more corner and thats an A.

A+

I took in consideration every choice made from his first day on the job until now. People joke about this franchise having an 0-16 record, but after great drafts and off-season moves, teams are afraid of us because they don’t know what to expect. I don’t fault him for players jumping ship because that’s part of the league. Not everyone will stay for money or a chance to sign, just ask Tony Gonzales. People want to change venues, it’s normal.

Just look at what he’s done with this team. A great head coach in Jim Scwartz, a Defensive Co-ordinator in Guther, Scott Linehan on the Offensive side, and great talent that want to play for more than a paycheck. In three years time, Mayhew has built a team from the ground up. Of course, we have yet to see it translateon the field, but already he has the other 31 teams taking note and trying to duplicate his success.

Yeah lets start winning consistently on the field (and even make the playoffs) before we start crowning Mayhew NFL GM of the Year.

You are graded for overall performance

Who grades based off of improvement? If you fail your first test in a class miserably, but by the end of the year are getting C’s, do you deserve an A because you improved?

So wait

After walking into a team that lost every single game in the season, he should have been pulling winning seasons out of his bag of magic tricks? After 10 years of futility?

I’m sorry to say this, but your bar is set FAR too high.

A better analogy would be

A school has a classroom of degenerate, and illiterate failures. After giving the teacher a million tries to get their grades up, the class ultimately gets all Fs on their final exams. The teacher is fired and another teacher comes in and raises those failures to a respectable C-B range. Would you crown that teacher as a genius? Hell yes

do you feel there is no additional room for improvement?

tests are at a point in time

up to this point he’s done incredibly well. there are few people in the world that i think would have

1) accepted the challenge of taking over an 0-16 team that deserved to go 0-16 – devoid of talent
2) built a contender within 3 years through prudent drafts and good FA signings
3) got a city totally amped for this season

again it’s a point in time. as of today, no, there’s nothing he could have done better (without me doing the studying to find a GM that built a winner faster – maybe JAX comes to mind).

if this team goes 7-9 and a lot of luster is gone, then yes, his grade goes down.

but up to this point, he’s done amazing

Just look at the roster he inherited in 2008 and look at it now. Plus, most of our key players are 27 or younger so it’s a team that’s being built to have continued success.

Can’t give a solid A until we reach the playoffs. All the additions are great on paper but we need to see the payoff on the field. I also want to see Avril resigned, that’s most important at this point for Mayhew

B+

Gave a B+. Would be an A if he would do anything significant to improve the O-Line. We have a great QB and a ton of weapons, but if he has no time to throw and the RBs have no holes, it doesn’t matter how great your weapons are. Not to mention our great QB gets hit so much, he can’t finish a season healthy. But, the greatest need was the D, and he has done some great things…lets give Scwartz some credit too.

The fewest sacks against the most throws last year. . .

Yeah our O-line sucks. Fire them all and start over with camp fodder from other teams. . We will do much better. Our starting RB played with 2 turf toes so NO running game what so ever. Joel scroll threw yesterdays front page articles and 1 of them has 2 video clips that are EXCELLENT to watch. You will see that in 3 short years this team is now built for the next decade. Pre-Mayhew we had Megatron/Avril. . That’s it and Avril I still think is overrated but hey everyone else likes him so I keep that thought to myself for the most part. Now jump 3 years ahead and we have SUH/Fairley/KVB/Avril. . .Levy/Tulloch(160 tackles last season) Durant a steady OLB, Houston (steal of a deal) and now Eric Wright at CB(5th year and PB bound) At Safety you have 1 of the best young S’s in the game who played hurt all of last year. On offense we have Staff(I know he has not done shit yet) Best/Leshoure/Backus/Sims/Megatron/Nate/Grew(damn fine young TE) Sheff, if Titus pans out like we all think he will we have a Deshawn Jackson 2.0 on our hands. . .This team is set to go NOW! Bring on the Playoffs and we will see how great an off season Philly actually had!

I put A- because of my general excitement level, but in reality he probably deserves an even lower grade. The fact of the matter is he has still only won 8 games in two years. Until they win some meaningful games and a meaningful point of the season, I don’t see how anyone can give him over an A-. Like I said, he probably deserves closer to a B, but I am so pumped for this season general hopefulness has put his grade on a slight curve.

A+

He has redefined Detroit football. From an 0-16 team, to one where players are turning down longer, better paying contracts to come here. This year he gave us on of the top rated drafts, and pull what I consider to be a great FA. Hell, the man pulled a trade with dallas which would be considered the football equivelant to selling a jar of air, and Jerry Jones admits that much.I know that many of these things havent translated into wins, but we were in every game last year, and im not sure execution should fall into Mayhews lap. Look how excited the fans are about this coming year. A huge part of that is because of Mayhew.

I’m not sure what an A+ would be. He has a tough cap situation to work with, so I’m sure he didn’t get all the guys he wanted. Still, he managed to add the best middle linebacker in free agency for dimes on the dollar and got a couple of good corners too. They still have to prove they can play, but he’s done his part. Lions on the rise

I am not a Steeler fan, but the Lions seem to be building thier infrastructure very similar to the late 60’s early 70’s Steelers. Strong line through the draft. Rocket armed quarterback.
Build an intimating defense that will keep you in every game while working on the other areas. Keep this plan going and don’t buy into the big splash theory. He is building a foundation for the next 7 to 8 years, not the next two.

When I look at this roster i think of the Steel Curtain without the HOF LB’s at this point. But who knows Levy/Tulloch/Durant maybe we do have 2 HOF LB’s already, behind this line they might just go berserk. A thumping Safety and 2 average CB’s

A-

He has a plan that makes sense and has stuck to it so far. I believe having a defensive minded coach with success in the past has helped his draft and free agency selections(KVB and Tulloch). His drafts have been very good. No more do we hear the selection and say to ourselves “Who?” I probably would have given him an A+ if there was upgrade to Peterman on the O line signed in free agency but it’s not over yet.

Simply because he has almost cured us from the illness MIllen gave and left us with. He drafted great We have a Great D Line and Legit LB Core now something we haven’t had since Rob. P was here. He has made great moves turn this team around iWould like to see us start winning more. Idk why people want him to sign another corner when we’re already over the cap. and we have THE best line in football which will make the DB’s look good enough and we might even have a shining gem in Aaron Berry, Phonze played well until Brady embarrased him. and Even houston held his own against the Number 1 WR sometimes. iWould like to see Avril signed but if we don’t have the money yet and if Avril really wants to stay here he could sign his tender and comeback and try and get a contract worked out toward the end of the season. So its on both sides can’t neccesarily Blame just mayhew for that. But overall for what we’ve done in the past 2 years. iRepeat TWOO years we went from 0-16 to 2-14 to 6-10 that alone should be worth an A

This is basically the argument I got into a thousand times back about a year or so with joshsun – do you grade based on where we are, or how far we’ve come?

Personally, Mayhew has done in 3 years what I honestly figured would take at least 5.

No, the wins haven’t necessarily come yet. But they are coming, and I’d be hard pressed to not say that this team is an A+. Top 10 (5?) defense, probably top 10 offense, special teams ability all over the place… I do believe we’ve restored the roar. What more could you ask for?

funny thought isn't it????
Top 10 (5?) defense

I mean, I didn’t know WHEN the day would happen when I wasn’t cripppled in fear everytime our defense went out there. Low and behold, week 1 of 2010, and the Lions show true signs of what’s in store (with that magnificent goaline stop and repeated fowling of cutler’s terrific field position)…this year it’s even more to the extreme. We dare to say it’s a strength!

Man, there’s one thing that can stop our O from being top 10: the o-line (no, it’s not even Stafford, we’ll still be top 10 in yards IMO if the o-line plays well – we’d just be close to top 5 in other categories with Stafford). That line play means a TON.

My bottom line keeps coming down to the scoreboard. As long as we continue to put up 20+ points a game, I see us winning quite a lot in ’11 (10ish wins or so)

Some position is going to be shortened.

Would you rather have the best defensive line in the league, a solid LB corps, and an alright DB group, or diminish the LBs/DL for the sake of a top flight CB? Because that’s all we’re missing. We have a great nickel guy, a couple of good role players, and fantastic depth and talent waiting to be tapped on the bench.

by rames on Aug 2, 2011 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

A+

and here’s my reasoning…

When you look at the team as it was assembled when Mayhew took over for Millen, did you feel that they had a chance to win any given Sunday? I know I didn’t. Then he trades one of our better receivers (Roy Williams) to Dallas for a host of draft picks and introduces us to the first official “Mayhewing”. After that, he hires a defensive coodinator from Tennessee who talked about finding a replacement for Bobby Layne. After a successful first draft, with a plan in place, the Lions win 2 games. A second draft brings arguably the best defensive lineman in the modern era and a home run threat running back. The team improves to 6-10 and was not blown out by any team, in most cases the game was decided late in the 4th quarter. The players never quit, and they had an opportunity to win in every game.

Improvement on both sides of the ball. This season, like most of you, I feel that we are able to go into any game and win. It doesn’t matter if it’s New England, Green Bay, or Atlanta. Any week it is more than possible for the Lions to win. It won’t take a fluke play or any lucky bounces to win the game. The talent and ability are there and ready to compete every game.

In the past, we could say “if we get some right bounces, we could win”. Now we can say, “They have to stop us for them to win. We expect to win”.

That is the reason I gave Mayhew an A+. The beat down culture of losing in Detroit is over. For that alone, he deserves the grade.

I voted A as well. But I've been wondering...

Do you think that he is truly exceptional, or we’re so used to incompetence that he looks saintly by comparison? Could it be as if I fed you ramen noodles for weeks, then took you to the olive garden for a nice bowtie pasta with meat sauce? The olive garden is ok, not spectacular, but you’d tell me that it was the best shit you’ve ever had.
Going down the list, I can’t think of many bungles. He’s had a great batting average on our top picks in the draft consistently, and gotten some late round contributors. A third round pick from a couple years ago had two game winning interceptions this past year for us. He parlayed a declining WR into a first round pick >complete TE, and neither were popular moves at the time, but they were the right ones. Bryant “Droptimus Prime” Johnson was a dud FA, but that seems to be the exception, not the rule. DWheelz and Aaron Brown have yet to show much, but it’s ludicrous to expect every draft pick to pan out. That doesn’t happen for any team, doesn’t matter if the GM is god himself.
I feel like I should be pinching myself, but I think the A really is deserved.

Moving in the right direction, but we’re not there yet. I would feel better with a little more focus upon the offensive line. Yeah, we’re on a 4-game win streak, but it would be a good to grade MM at the half way point in the season because we’ll have a better idea of exactly where we stand in comparison to the rest of the NFL. I like the progress the Lions have made the past couple of years.

A...

I wanted to give an A+ but I thought that was more Kool-Aid than truth. I gave an A because of the remarkable turn around, and had to leave the A+ because right now our team looks “playoff bound” on paper, but it’s not guaranteed. As the players have said, they gotta prove it.

Plus, I had to leave the + off because there is a chance that we could’ve had a winning record last season. By this, I mean, what if we go to playoffs last year, that would get an A+, does that make sense? I’m not saying that was my expectation, just trying to use some sort of scale to give a honest grade.

I'll echo what a previous poster replied to someone else

How does the fact that we almost had a winning record or how many games they win an indicator of the GM?

If it was Schwartz we were talking about or something, it would be different, but this is just a guy who controls who is on the team.

I guess...

my point is that it’s hard to give an A+ just because what grade would you give him if the turn around takes 1 less year. I’m not knocking him, just trying to give a logical reason for my grade.

Come on you guys.....Let it show in the final product on the field before annointing him God.

He’s shrewd, and deliberate, but his skills as a talent evaluator has not been validated. Were coming off of a putrid 10 years where pretty much anyone could of come in and done a talent upgrade. But just how good in the talent? I don’t think were the ones to say after watching garbage for so long.

Huh?

You don’t think we have one of the top defensive lines in football?

You don’t think we have one of the larger groups of explosive playmakers in skill positions in the league?

What about our special teams?

I don’t know man, I know the whole ‘bare cupboard’ thing is relevant, but even compared to the rest of the league, we’re doing pretty decently.

I'm with Nate on this one delusional

I agree, don’t nominate him GM of the year yet, but he has done his thing! Turn arounds don’t happen overnight! We always have tougher schedules than other teams, and that was including when we were bad. The basement of the league! He’s gotten some talent here. We have a chance! Did u not see any of the games this year? Even with the injuries, we were still in it with the better teams!

by Dre81 on Aug 2, 2011 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Nate, Until it shows up in the W/L record, it's all just on paper.

I, right with every one else that he/they have brought respectability back to this team, but I like everyone else could be just as wrong if it doesn’t shot up in W’s.

Were just being a bit premature in how to judge Mayhew, that’s all.

B+

based on the highly visible improvements in the team over the past two years.
Can’t go higher than that because there are a lot of question mark players, and some very bad moves.

Great pickups: Pettigrew, Delmas, Levy, Sammie Lee, Suh, Houston, Williams, KVB, LoJack, Sims, Burleson

Big Q marks: Stafford, Follett, Best, Speivey, OL other than Sims

Bad moves: CC Brown, Wade, G. Jackson, B. Johnson, D Williams, J Peterson, L Foote. A lot of money wasted there. I mean, they released Leigh Bodden and replaced him with Jonathan Wade.

I’m not evaluating based on this year’s pickups because it’s too soon to tell. It’s only potential at this point. I’ll wait to grade on that after this season is over.

Ultimately, I think it will come down to how Stafford turns out. The biggest pick has the biggest weight.

by drgarnett on Aug 2, 2011 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

Mostly agree

All the moves haven’t been great. But he was seriously strapped with a lot of those moves…what other options were there??? I also disagree on Stafford. In no way shape or form can Stafford’s injuries have any barring on Mayhew’s decision to draft him or not…Stafford clearly looks to be the player they though he was, he had no prior injury history. A grade on that move by Mayhew, even if he truns out to be injury prone. Now if Stafford is healthy and isn’t very good…then you can criticize Mayhew!

Some of those guys had to go.

Bodden may have been good but he had a big contract. Some of those guys were stop gaps without breaking the bank.

You forget that with a team with so many holes, and the worst pass defense in history, the secondary was decimated. There wasn’t a starter on the roster, and Bodden didn’t deserve a contract at the time. So far, Mayhew hasn’t been able to address it in any way but trying to stop the bleeding. Given the draft room philosophy, he wasn’t going to reach to pick Prince Amukamara when Nick Fairley was available, and he hasn’t reached on secondary picks before that either. He’s just been filling the cupboard with warm bodies, and now has legitimate strengths to build around and get some players. Bryant Johnson was a legitimate gaffe, JP and Foote were stopgaps, but I don’t see the moves that you have up there listed as “Bad” that deserve it, aside from Droptimus Prime.
And Follett was a 7th round pick! How is that a “Q mark?” If he makes the team, he’s a success at that point.

A

Just based on the past 2 season (3 years) alone. He inherited a team that was beyond terrible. Matt Millen made horrible choices. Things that looked good in the beginning, such as the Charles Rogers pick, Roy Williams pick, turned out terrible. Millen made way too many questionable decisions, such as Mike Williams (enough said!).

Mayhew, I think given circumstance, deserves an A. We have a team that’s a far cry from where we were at 0-16. Nobody would have considered us playoff bound in before any preseason games were played a couple of years back.

We’ll see how this all works out, but I think with the progress, of where we were, to where we are now. He’s deserving of an A.

A all Day...

Lets start with Draft Picks that have had an impact or some sort of success or are in line for it.
09
Stafford
Pettigrew
Delmas
Levy
SLH
Follett
10
Suh
Best
Spievey
Fox
11
Fairley
Young
Leshoure

Now lets look at trades, not any of them really stuck in 09 but last year was a different story. Just want to add that imo Mayhew just tried to fill holes the best he could after that 0-16 season.

Houston
Sims
LoJack
Phonz
Schef
Hill
CW
Berry
Phillips

All of which started at some point for us and played well.

Last but not least we look at FA from last year and this year.

KVB
Nate
Palmer
Carp
Vasher
Rayner
Wright
Durant
Tulloch
Coleman

The only thing you can hold against Mayhew is the trades and FAs in 09 but like i said alot of it was just trying to stop the bleeding from the winless season.

Dead on!

If his first season is what’s holding back the higher grades, take in consideration what the team was. 0-16, some people obviously just here for a check, not to win, or even seriously play for that matter! First year was just patchwork! Bandages, no surgery! Lol

Exactly.

He took a winless team to a team that doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses. There are spots we could improve but every player on this could play for other teams which couldnt be said a few years ago.

I gave him a straight A

Only because he has given me hope beyond hope with all the guys he has either brought in via draft or FA and the trades that he has made, I mean come on man he got more out of Roy Williams than anyone else could have, a guy who could hardly get on the field with Dallas was worth Grew and Delmas, that alone was worth a full grade up. then you see how he Mayhewed Seattle for Nate and Sims, come on another full grade up on that, Then he is smart enough to know how to let his coaches pick guys that are right for the system that they want to run, alla SUH Williams, Fairley, KVB, The GM’s job isn’t to get these guys to play that is the HC and his OC/DC job. his job is to get players for them to do that and he has.

I'm not giving him high grades anymore for trades he made 2 years ago

Same with Schwartz the talent is there they have all proven they are capable it’s time to get it done. Like I said as an organization. Mayhew is part of that they have done a great job of setting this team up. Who is run blocking anyways? He has yet to address that need. I’m far from hating on the guy but reubuilding time is over. It is time to WIN starting in 2011 there are no excuses for less than 8-8.

Incomplete!?!

I like all the moves he has made, but dislike the ones he hasn’t. My concern over the depth and lack of competition for the offensive line keeps me from giving him an A. B+ is my thoughts.

I never saw a picture of him before. I guess I always pictured Marty Mornhinweg when I saw his name mentioned (even though I’m aware they are two different people).

You know he played CB also right?

And that’s why I am pleased with Wright and Houston, we have a GM who was a CB and if he likes what he see’s out of the guys we have here, then I’m OK with it also. Before someone talks about Wade from last year, remember that Wade was our best looking CB coming out of camp.

Part of the reason I like Phonz so much

Mayhew is a DB and has been very high on the kid sense he came out. Deion Sanders as well has said positive things about him. If anyone has the right to judge a DB out of college these twos opinion counts more than most.

A+

because there are only 2 things i can knock him for:
drafting DWill over wallace, and letting turk go. i have a feeling that they knew it was going to be hard to get him back at the right price to come back and be a backup.

as far as DWill goes, thats 1, i repeat 1 bad pick in 3 years. and THATS A+ worthy.
