Detroit Lions Training Camp: Notes From Monday's Practice
- Running back Jahvid Best was out again because of his concussion, but Jim Schwartz reiterated that Best is expected to return "pretty soon."
- Defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch missed practice for the second day in a row, but as speculated, he doesn't have an injury. The Lions are just resting him, although he isn't all that thrilled with being kept off the field.
"I mean, I hate rest," he said, "but I always want to do what's in the best interest of this team. I'm here to help us win games, so if we feel like guys need rest and certain guys need more work, then that's what we're going to do."
- In addition to Best and Vanden Bosch, the Lions were also without tight end Richard Dickson, offensive tackle Jason Fox, defensive tackle Nick Fairley, defensive tackle Andre Fluellen and cornerback Alphonso Smith on Monday.
- After missing Sunday's practice, fullback Matt Clapp, offensive tackle Corey Hilliard and defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock returned on Monday.
- Wide receiver Calvin Johnson said his shoulder is sore, but he is "working through it."
- Cornerback Aaron Berry and safety Erik Coleman got some work with the No. 1 defense today.
- Several former Lions players attended Monday's practice, including Mel Farr, Maurice Harvey, Allen Hughes, Scott Kowalkowski, Rudy Redmond, Larry Tharpe and Bobby Thompson

That's the point though, yeah?
If everyone is as confused as us, that should mean defensive coordinators are confused also, right? I don’t want this to be like the Marinelli days where everyone knows every little going on in the organization. It may be wreaking havoc on my fantasy team, but I truly feel like the less I know about player injuries, the better, if for no other reason that to make our opponents have to put in more effort to gameplan for the entire 53 man roster.
I disagree.
If you 100% know a dude is going to be out, you spend 0 minutes in practice game planning for what he brings to the table. Unlike a few years back, this team actually has a number of playmakers on both sides of the ball.
Does being generally confusing about their current health status make a HUGE difference? No. But does it ensure your opponents have to game plan for every contingency thus making their time in practice less efficient? Damn skippy.

Agreed with MFTB
Best is a scalpel at RB. He could explode on those fools and they’ll never know which way he’s headed.

I heard yes but they don't seem worried.
Of course they never come across as being worried until its definitive the player is out.

I heard he has a brain
At first I thought that means he’s really smart but now I’m beginning to wonder what the implication was.

I dont mind seeing KVB resting here and there.
We all know he’ll bring it on gameday.

I'm thinking
because of his high motor and him always flying to the ball until he gets to it, they’re saving the rest of the team from KVB eating them alive. haha
LITTLE MAN IN BACKFIELD! LITTLE MAN IN BACKFIELD! GO STEFAN LOGAN!
I'm surprised how much playing time their giving to Pitcock.
They must see something in him that they like.

Yeah, me too, dude looks like he's real hard to move
and looked better than Calloway, I thought. We might have something there.

I guess.....On that side I can't get all that excited except maybe for Mayhew being able to get a pick for him in a trade.
Were talking about pretty far down the depth chart now.

Trades this close to roster cuts don't seem that likely to me
especially for somebody lower on the depth charts. Teams can just sit and wait for players to be cut and scoop them up. The advantage Detroit had last year was they had #1 priority on the waiver wire. So, they could scoop up these good players that were waived and Mayhew could do his magic. Happily, they don’t have first priority this year.

True, but its just nice to have good depth
On the plus side, its also nice to have a little sweetener if Marty finds somebody who needs to get Mayhewed.

He's so depthed down the chart he won't be kept, but if someone wants to grease up for a Mayhewing....
Have at it.
The only one Pitcock is competing with for a job is Fluellan.
.Does your momma have a Big Ass like your head?
Exactly. He's there to keep Fluellen from getting complacent.
And if he wins the roster spot, so much the better for us.
I'm officially scarred for life
Sittin here watching the Bears and Giants and I’m having a flashback everytime I see big 90 hit that corner on that LT lol. I’m literally scared sitting here thinking about week 5 smh.
really
I’m loving it. The D doesn’t look as good (by a long shot) and their oline still looks like swiss cheese (though a tad less holey…) hah!

Yeah that's the thing
The Bears in general don’t scare me one bit. I’m absolutely terrified of Ju P though. I just can’t get over it. I’m part of the get rid of Backus crew but even I have to admit he played well last year. His well wasn’t good enough against 90, scares me to death man.

worried too much
That Pepper’s sack was in the first game of the year, very early in the game, with Backus having Sims next to him for the first time in real game action. Backus had spent so many years trying to cover for the deficiencies of the “players” that the previous regime had been throwing in there, that he forgot he had a real pro guard next to him. I do not recall Peppers getting another sack in that game or the second one last year.
Peppers is a monster, but it's Matt Forte that worries me more.
Forte tore us up last year. If our new defense can shut him down, the Bears are toast.
You mean the Bears right?
The same could be said about the Lions (lol)
